Agent comments on Carmelo Anthony’s free agency decision

Keith Schlosser, Lead Writer

Carmelo Anthony has notified the Knicks that he’ll be opting out of his current contract, thus making him a free agent this summer.

The decision undoubtedly opens up some doors for Anthony to peek through, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s simply shutting the one that keeps him in the Big Apple just like that.

‘Carmelo loves being a Knick, he loves the City and the fans,” the forward’s agent, Leon Rose, also told The Knicks Blog and SNY.tv. “At this stage of his career he just wants to explore his options.”

Carmelo Anthony

It’s clear that as a homegrown kid, Anthony’s heart seems to be in New York. There are certainly plenty of pros to donning orange and blue, but also a number of cons, as it relates to handling the pressures of having to win big, and do it rather quickly, too. Should he stay and accomplish big things, however, the star forward will continue to be celebrated as one of the city’s greatest sports heroes.

What Phil Jackson goes on to do with this squad remains to be seen, but without much flexibility until next summer, time isn’t exactly on the executive’s side as Anthony explores his options and considers teams ready to win now.

maybe iam a bit bias but I will lose some faith in phil if he trades shump. there are so many other players that need to be traded, cut, brought out or "accidently killed".

All of a sudden here comes the leak about Love to Chicago.  Forget what Windhorst said, but now see the Plan B from Chicago. Makes me wonder if Carmelo has already said no to the Windy City.

Melo and Tom T just don't seem like a good mix.  He already ran Rose and Noah into the ground.  Can't imagine what he'll do to Melo.

Leon Rose is such a dufus. I don't believe anything that comes out of mouth.

The average person just sees opportunity to say that, 'Oh, Melo should go here, Melo should go there. I think he should do this, I think he should do that.' But they don't take into consideration the family aspect of it. Your livelihood. Where you're going to be living at. Do you want your kids to grow up in that place? In that city? Do I want to spend the rest of my career in that situation in that city? So all of that stuff comes into play," Anthony said in an interview with Vice Sports that was taped on June 3.

"My son goes to school (in New York). He loves it here. To take him out and take him somewhere else, he has to learn that system all over again, he has to get new friends. And I know how hard it was for me when I moved from New York to Baltimore at a young age. Having to work your way to try to make friends. And go extra to try to make friends and try to fit in and try to figure out the culture in that area.

Sounds like he's staying to me...

@AgeesCatch  are you a Knicks fan? why would you like to see Melo and Lebron on a atlantic team?

@OLDKNICK

We'll all find out how Phil himself feels about that. The risk here is having another bad year diminishes his value - he still has some value right now.

@OLDKNICK  supposedly shump has already been doing 2 a days ,and studying the triangle 9via phils books) ...would be cruel to trade him

@zebeto I'm not sure a lot want to trade him.  I think a lot just think he will get traded.

@orlando_knickfan That's a great point and something I was just thinking about. Or it's media making a story out of nothing.

@knickfan2  good for him. I know ppl hate him but still I wouldn't want him to go to jail for that

@Sandro Guedes @OLDKNICK  Sandro, you are a trading machine man.. You really have your hands on the trigger big time.

@barnaby87 @zebeto out of the 3 SG on our Roster .........for JR is the one who should be traded , not shump or thjr .

@barnaby87 @orlando_knickfan There's no reason for him to leave. He just has to be patient for a bit longer.  He is making the right decision even if our team looks horrible right now. All you need is one Melo.

@Sandro Guedes @bk_vet Smart basketball fan POV??? really... well any SMART BASKETBALL FAN wouldn't want to see 1 team dominate the rest of the league with superstars in their prime  playing TOGETHER, they'd rather seem them play AGAINST each other. I'm sure a smart PHILLY fan might want to seen a team like that.

@Sandro Guedes @theking @AgeesCatch  its not that its that a lot of small market teams don't want to go into the luxury tax and philly is a medium market not really small

just my opinion of course

@Sandro Guedes @zebeto @OLDKNICK //i would disagree man .....JR if his head is on right , is a perenial 6th man candidate every year ! ...explosive off the bench scorer .

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@Sandro Guedes @Tony Fonseca  I disagree Sandro and here is why: Knicks can afford to have ALL 3 on the roster based on age and salary.

ON age 28, 23, and 22 - the right age difference if you want continuity.

All three combined make 8.5 million dollar which is very responsible for the current CBA.

On the other hand we have 69 Million on Melo, Stat, Barg, and Chandler. THIS IS THE PROBLEM

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@Sandro Guedes @Tony Fonseca  In management and finance we take care of the big problem first. The big problem is the front court. As soon as you solve that the money that Shump commands on the market will be peanuts/well spent. All three of them can play SF for some minutes if you wanna go small and some limited time at PG for Shump if you wanna go big.

@Sandro Guedes @Tony Fonseca You really undervalue JR and our current FO's past history of getting the most of real or percieved head cases in the past - See, Dennis Rodman.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

@Sandro Guedes @Tony Fonseca  Shump still a raw talent with very good upside. Woodson curtailed his development IMO.  If the shots are not falling anyone is horrible shooting guard!!! So you never know..
