Carmelo Anthony has notified the Knicks that he’ll be opting out of his current contract, thus making him a free agent this summer.
The decision undoubtedly opens up some doors for Anthony to peek through, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s simply shutting the one that keeps him in the Big Apple just like that.
‘Carmelo loves being a Knick, he loves the City and the fans,” the forward’s agent, Leon Rose, also told The Knicks Blog and SNY.tv. “At this stage of his career he just wants to explore his options.”
It’s clear that as a homegrown kid, Anthony’s heart seems to be in New York. There are certainly plenty of pros to donning orange and blue, but also a number of cons, as it relates to handling the pressures of having to win big, and do it rather quickly, too. Should he stay and accomplish big things, however, the star forward will continue to be celebrated as one of the city’s greatest sports heroes.
What Phil Jackson goes on to do with this squad remains to be seen, but without much flexibility until next summer, time isn’t exactly on the executive’s side as Anthony explores his options and considers teams ready to win now.
