Anthony plays pickup basketball with Kobe Bryant

Free agent Carmelo Anthony was rumored to have played a game of pickup basketball at UCLA with Lakers guard Kobe Bryant on Saturday.

The Lakers are in serious contention for Anthony after offering him a four-year deal worth $97 million.

Anthony could decide as early as Monday if he will stay with the Knicks, who can pay him $129 million over five years, or make the move to Los Angeles (Newsday, July 7).

While Anthony has shown concerns about moving his family across the country and loves New York, he lives in Los Angeles during the offseason and is close friends with Bryant. The two played together on the U.S. Olympic team, and Anthony has gone to Bryant for advice in the past.

Knicks team president Phil Jackson recently referred to Bryant as “persuasive,” and while Bryant could not make it to Anthony’s meeting with the Lakers, the team made an impression. The Lakers’ four-year, $96-million offer is the second most a team can pay Anthony — second to the Knicks, who are offering him $34 million more.

Playing for a team that will contend for a title is important to Anthony, and neither the Knicks nor the Lakers are in that position. While Anthony also met with the Bulls and Rockets, who do fall into that category, though, it would seem as though the decision will come down to New York and Los Angeles.

SAS kills me with this woe is me for LeBron. Poor LeBron, having the chance to play with Wade, Bosh, Allen, Battier, etc. Had Spo smartened up and used Bosh as the #2 option, maybe Miami has another ring.

I watched more Michigan games than most...I loved the Timmy pick...I love Timmy

BUT

If he can essentially net you Thad and Pua (full MLE)

there really is nothing to talk about..

and Thad is being very underrated by many....

Houston's natural landing spot for Bosh: Can play PF next to Dwight Howard, make $20M-plus and return to home state w/ a title contender.

@Marvel_ Forcing the Knicks hand to offer him a Max. To be fair he stated early on he wanted to become a FA, see what it's like to be wooed by other teams. That's something he never got to experience. Had he waited until 2011...

@JesusBlasTheKnickWay I agree. I like his youth, athleticism(though he can use it more), energy and confidence, but there are a lot of holes in his game. He's a volume shooter, no where close to automatic. He's an awful defender. Not a good rebounder. Has no handle and can't pass.

@JesusBlasTheKnickWay  Timmy was on the all-rookie team.  Most draft redos have him top-10.  If we get rid of him just to dump stat, whose contract expires in one year anyway, it better be for something worth at least that much.

@JesusBlasTheKnickWay Not really.  I'd question sacrificing any young asset just to gain the full MLE vs. the mini.  Basically sacrificing a young asset for 1-2 years of Pau Gasol (if we're lucky) which is questionable.

fair enough I guess. Just saying bidding war over a "serviceable role player" is not good business.
