Bargnani out indefinitely with torn elbow ligament

Andrea Bargnani has torn the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow (Cacciola).

He is out indefinitely, the team announced, after an MRI revealed the tear on Thursday.

The Knicks said the injury occurred during the third quarter of Wednesday’s game against the 76ers.

Here’s the video of the play where he injured himself:

Harris Decker

As per my previous post about the Knicks lack of bench depth, this story seems right on time.

The Knicks are officially falling apart at the seams, with Amar’e Stoudemire and Kenyon Martin already banged up, Cole Aldrich and Jeremy Tyler will have to play a lot of minutes and that leaves the Knicks even more vulnerable than they already were. This is obviously a freak play and not an indictment on Bargnani’s ability to stay healthy, but still, this could not have come at a worse time. The Knicks face stiff competition in the next few weeks and that means more minutes for Carmelo Anthony (who is already leading the league in minutes) and likely more losses for the New York Knicks.

I am looking at this as a positive. We suck with Bargnani and we can't beat even the worst teams, so it can't get worse. Maybe this is a positive catalyst...Melo more at the 4, more minutes for Tyler, maybe more focus from JR, better D without Bargnani on the floor. All I know is that I have had more friends tell me this week that they are done with the Knicks, so if we haven't bottomed yet we are damn close.

I feel bad for Bargs, but this is just reflective of how much of a joke this season is. Our marquee trade of the off-season now requires a procedure usually reserved for baseball payers. One Tommy John surgery, coming up.

Get better, Andrea.

..... unfortunately with Woodson's aversion to playing rookies....."they make mistakes".  Ha,ha,ha...mistake by rookies...good one, the only way to get them in is via injury.  They made a bid deal about beating the bushes to find a backup to Chandler.  Found one...Aldrich.   Through a broken leg, respiratory illness, we still don't know what he can go.  NOW, he gets a  shot.  Shouldn't be an unknown now...but is...thanks Woody.

Same with Murry...had to have Felton go down...then Prigioni.  He is serviceable...and right now , better than Felton.

Same with Tyler......with Barg down. We'll see him. Lots , I hope.

Going forward....by the end of the season, at least we'll know if these guys are any good and can fit in the new coaches plans......if it weren't for injury no one would know....

Al jefferson has been playing solid bball since kemba went down in terms of both scoring and bounding. Look for him to possibly continue his good play tonight.

Watch Charlotte backup PG Ramon Sessions go for a career high tonight. He's always killed the Knicks, and tonight he'll get 35+ minutes.

Don't mean to sound callous, but how much worse can they play without Bargnani? I feel bad for anyone who gets injured, but they embarrass themselves every night. Bargnani has been a terrible addition. This guy is 7 ft with obvious talent, but plays as if he's literally punching a time clock. For some reason when I think of a losing team, he's the first guy that pops into my mind. Take all the time you need getting healthy AB.

“Right now we’re pretty much open to anything new,’’ Smith said. “The old stuff isn’t really getting it done. But at the end of the day, it’s going to come from the players. I don’t think it’s coach’s fault or the scheme’s fault. If you play hard and play smart it’s tough to lose games.’’

Asked his view of Woodson’s defensive system, Smith said: “That’s really not my area of expertise. I’m more of a scoring-type player. I’ll leave that to those guys. Whatever they want to do, it’s OK with me. Just let me know.’’

This is funny!!!

The New York Knicks' season-long experiment with Andrea Bargnani has come to grinding halt.

The former first overall draft pick tore a ligament in his elbow during Wednesday's embarrassing 110-106 loss to thePhiladelphia 76ers, per the Knicks' PR department.

The injury came on the most Bargnani kind of play imaginable—a spectacular failure of a dunk attempt. The 7-foot Italian drove the lane with his usual slow-as-molasses cadence, made up his mind to leap way too far away, only to meet two defenders and miss the rim by a good three feet.

This team needs a freakin pg that can play or help out IQ wise. Again, we already have a bunch of head cases so sign Bynum and bring in Andre Miller. This way we dont have to scrape for draft picks or anything

I feel sorry for laughing at that landing now (though even Melo looked like he cracked a smile)... still hate the trade, and the team has generally played better when Bargs sits, but I wish Bargs the best ... get well soon Bargs.

Knicks may need to bring in some bodies to fill out the roster.

I doubt the call Bynum, but guys like Ivan Johnson, Earl Barron if he's out there?

it's all pretty bleak

Does Jeremy Tyler's contract have a team option at the end of the season?

Bargnani has his weaknesses, which are glaring and well-publicized, but Woody does NOT use him effectively. This is one of zillions of reasons why Woody must go.

Bargs can't create his own shot, but he's a good midrange shooter. He needs touches if he's going to be out there. I've seen too many games where he has a good 1st half, then 2 shots rest of way. He was one of the only players taking advantage of the 76ers lack of presence in the middle and scoring yesterday. Yet he wasn't on the floor late when we couldn't hit a shot.

With the season lost, my biggest fear is that this injury will be used as an excuse to stay Woody's execution. As the saying goes, dude need to go

The only break we can get is a leg, ankle, knee or elbow!

Maybe now we can get a good look at Jeremy Tyler. Mickey Woodson always has to be forced into doing something.

@hosket Id rather see rookies make rookie mistakes than 8 year vets making rookie mistakes any day of the week. Fvck Woodson.

rgm891

Woodson keeps playing raymundo. He causes so many problems on the defensive end of the ball and tht doesnt even count switching. Sessions will def have a solid game. Until changes are made we are just going to keep struggling. On switches the opposing player always has an advantage because one felton is step slow and always allows an and 1. Or there is a 6 ft 8 dude that lights it up with ease. But what do we know haha. Felton will keep playing big mins.

lindro88
lindro88

Only problem? This team has nothing but problems. How about the fact they don't have one player besides Anthony, who can reliably knock down a wide open 20 foot jump shot. This team has probably played 5 good games all season.

@buddhabing I would rather trade Tyson and a pick to the Suns for Bledsoe. I know no one wants to give up a pick but if we are gonna give one up Bledsoe is the guy to do it for. I was begging for the knicks to trade for Bledsoe while on the Clips and he was starving for mins behind Paul. Another trade i would explore is to OKC perkins and Reggie for Tyson.

xmenreturn

@BrostoevskyI agree. AB is not a post up player and the offense needs to run thru him at times.  The dude has lost all his confidence under Woody.  He used to be a decent passer and he rarely does that now

lindro88
lindro88

I'm sure the Clippers feel pretty good about having him. They lost Paul and went 7-2. As for being 2x better than Felton, you can say that about every starting PG and probably half the backups in the league.

BigChiefTriangle
BigChiefTriangle

@Kiyan Carter Harrison Barnes would actually make a great fit next to Melo as a combo 3/4.  Strong, fast, athletic defender who is hitting 41% from 3.

@JayfromtheFix @buddhabing Sign me up for either one of those trades. I think Perkins is useless but I think Reggie Jackson has potential to be a very good point guard in this league. He's more of an attacking score first point guard so he'd have to learn how to run a team.

buddhabing
buddhabing

@JayfromtheFix @buddhabing Would love to get Bledsoe here. Don't see Suns making that trade though. Jackson is more of a shooting guard than point guard. I wouldn't make that deal. Bledsoe would be no brainer; definitely do it.

Jeez man, I'm sick of Woodson too, but you can't blame him for Bargnani's confidence.

Did you see Bargnani the 2 years before this one?  If anything, Woodson has been nurturing him way beyond his worth.  If KMart was healthy, this injury would be addition by subtraction.

@Kiyan Carter

Hell yes.  Bogut may be an injury risk, but Tyson is about to turn 31 and he hasn't been able to stay healthy for any playoff series post-Dallas anyway...and you're right Barnes has upside.

PG will still be a major need ... Rondo is not get-table, but maybe Knicks will have a shot at Lowry or Conley in February...

Brostoevsky
Brostoevsky

No truedat - I don't blame him for lack of confidence. I don't think that's Bargnani's biggest issue (ability is also up there).

I blame Woody for not getting him looks (ie running plays) and/or not having him in the game on nights when he is clearly effective.
