Boeheim Thinks Knicks Will Win Atlantic; Hopes Melo Will Stay

Adam Zagoria, Team Reporter

Jim Boeheim watches a lot of Knicks’ games and follows them closely, and not just because his former star Carmelo Anthony is the team’s best player.

Despite the Knicks’ rough start to this season, the Syracuse coach believes they will turn it around and win the Atlantic Division. He also said he “hopes” Anthony re-signs with the Knicks during free agency and believes New York is the best spot for him.

“I think they’re in a division they can still come back and win,” Boeheim, whose Orange are ranked No. 2 nationally, told SNY.tv. “You know, they won 54 games in that division last year and I think they can still come back. What are they out, three games?”

Carmelo AnthonyYes, despite their 7-16 record, the Knicks are only three games back of the Boston Celtics in the Atlantic.

“I think they’ll win,” Boeheim said. “I think they’ll win the division and I think they’ll get going. I think Tyson [Chandler] being out is a big factor; he anchors their defense. I think J.R. Smith’s gotta get going a little bit and eventually get [Raymond] Felton back healthy and then I think they’ll make a run and I think at the end of the day they’ll win the division.”

As of Sunday morning, only two teams in the East — Indiana and Miami — had a winning record, meaning those two teams figure to dominate the East.

“How well [the Knicks] can do in the playoffs, I don’t know,” Boeheim said. “Indiana and Miami are going to be tough to overcome.”

As for Anthony, Boeheim said he hopes he re-signs with the Knicks and believes he will, as opposed to heading to the Lakers or elsewhere.

“I think he came to New York, he likes New York, he wanted to be in New York,” Boeheim said. “I think that every player now is looking for the best place to win. Players aren’t looking for money or security. Elite players now are looking for, ‘Where can I win, where can I be in a winning championship-type team.

“That’s what I think he’ll end up looking for. I hope it’s New York. He’s a good fit for New York. He likes New York. A lot of guys aren’t that comfortable.”

The Knicks should honestly reconsider trading Iman Shupert for now and possible wait to get rid of JR Smith instead. You guy's think teams would take Smith in return?

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

The Atlantic Division is terrible.

So,  here's to hoping we can be the best of the worst. LOL

Of course I want the Knicks to be the best of the best, but I'm also being realistic.

Our record speaks for itself.

With STAT looking like he's back, minutes are going to get even more scarce Tyson returns and Woodson give THJr the starting 2 spot. So JR and Shump better step it up or find themselves in a 2-for-1 with whomever has on good piece in return. With injuries to little more than your ego, it's time to get productive or get gone.

Part of the reason I've been so disappointed with this clown of a coach was on full display last night.  I understand JR was a big guy for you last year ands you have a "father-son" relationship or whatever nonsense the media wants to say about it, but it took this coach 18 games (23 - 5 JR was suspended for) to realize that JR was entirely ineffective and had no business being on the floor at the end of games?!?!?!?!

That should take 5 games at most to see that JR just doesn't have it.  WHether it's physical and he's recovering from injury, or mental, or whatever else, the coach has to realize sooner that playing JR is not putting his best lineup out there.

People hate on Shump (deservedly for his awful offense I might add right now), but those same people fail to realize the little stuff Shump does that helps teams win.  Shump is a good role player and a winning type of player who can help a team win even when his shot isn't falling.  JR does not have those same skills- He is a limited type of player who can only do one thing- Score.  If he's not doing that, he simply should be on the bench.

It amazes me that it took the coach this long to bench JR.  I can only imagine with a different coach...It basically took Woody 23 games to go to a Pablo-Timmy-Shump-Melo-Bargs lineup (for my money, the best lineup we have CLEARLY taking into consideration how Pablo has badly outplayed Felton and Timmy has badly outplayed JR).  That's ridiculous.

Pau Gasol recently stated that the thought of ending his career in Memphis is "appealing." Memphis is currently shopping Zach Randolph.

In order to keep Melo, the Knicks need to be creative while remaining competitive.

This works on ESPN trade machine:

Knicks get Zach Randolph.

Grizzlies get Pau Gasol

Lakers get Tyson & Shump

Reopen talks with Toronto.

Our starters becomes:

Lowery

THjr

Melo

Randolph

Bargs or Cole Aldrich

Seth Nadler

Ok, if the Knicks want to keep

Melo, they need to improve this year. If the plan is to retool for 2015 so you need to rid of Felton. If they have the cap space in 2015 and can get another superstar or stars, then what is the point of a first rounder in 2018. If I'm the Knicks I'd trade Felton, MWP and the first rounder for Lowry. Keep Shump for the future or a better package. Do not trade THJR, he's a player that's part of the future.

@rgm891Sadly I think J.R.'s play have made a not so good situation worse. his salary is more prohibitive, though not the worse, than those favorable rookie scale salaries, Shumpert, Jr. and our 2018 draft pick will possess. If he were playing as well as last year, yeah. He'd be a topic of trade conversation. Perhaps. But the lesson learned with J.R. is sell when his value is high. He has to go but that's when he increases his value. The up and down is too much for an unstable franchise to take.

The way people are talking, it's looking like we're going to have to dump JR at this point, I mean he was 6th man of the year last season, I'm not a huge Jr fan but he must have some trade value.

knickfan2

No other team or coaching staff will babysit or put up with JR's antics especially at $6mil/year.

@ds2488 Hey, people got on Avery Johnson for saying that THjr should start. I don't think he should start yet (unless he can remain hungry to improve) but he def deserves more minutes.

@Jesus Blas

"If #Lakers want Shumpert, #Knicks would want Kaman"

Knicks would want Kaman?  Why?  I do not want to see a Gasol-Kaman frontline wearing Knicks' unis.  Lakers just want to dump their underperformers for our two best defenders.  Knicks will be setting records in defensive futility if they go through with swapping Tyson and Shump for those two.

darealeric
darealeric

@Jesus Blas  Sounds interesting but complicated to have so many players on the move without the Knicks effing it up one way or another. Besides, we need to seriously explore getting JR the -uck outta here asap. That stupid stunt he pulled to show up Woodson the other night is just another in a pile of crap he has done. But there were still so many clowns here adamant about how lucky we were to sign him when NO ONE else offered him a contract AND we took his piece of sh-t brother. This franchise needs to rid itself of that stink immediately if they want to salvage this season.

@debut I heard about them, you heard of Carl Braun Harry Galleton Kenny Sears and Willie Naulls ? Melo is in the conversation

@knickfan2 Yeah this is the sad truth for sure. Im curious to see now if this comes an on-going trend with JR Smith. I hope it does. I just don't see it ending well if he's constantly being benched for his poor play. Haha

rgm891
rgm891

@Sandro Guedes @rgm891 Yeah you are right man. The only way I see it happening if they put him with Chandler or something. I like the idea of adding Gasol on this team for sure. It's not a bad idea. Let's see what happens man

rgm891
rgm891

@Carl D Hill @rgm891 Haha that's for sure. The Knicks have so many options to think about. I hope they make the right decisions and turn the roster around

@Sandro Guedes @ExpectTheWorst

Its not a champioship team, but we would have a little money to offer Lance Stephenson next summer while we shred Stat's contract the following summer. The idea is to get a legitimate scorer & rebounder to compliment Melo to keep him here.

@therealprof@Sandro Guedes Guys please pass that blunt over hear. I need a good trip. I can't see the Suns pulling a Knicks front office overpay for Melo. Stupid is as stupid does and Knicks do. Fantasy GMng won't change that.

therealprof
therealprof

@Sandro Guedes would you trade Melo to the Suns for Okafor and ALL 4 of their first round picks? The picks from the Wolves, Wizards and Pacers are lottery protected, so it may end up as few as 2 #1s but those are renewed for the next draft if protected and so on. None of the picks would land us any of the big dogs, but this deal, if we can give TC to the Nuggets first "because Bargs is playing so well" so they dont expect the tank(no trade specifics, might need a 3rd team), who are desperately needing a C not named Mozgov because of JaVale's injury, for our 2014 pick back, could land us close enough to put a package with those picks together to make a play at Marcus Smart at #5 who I believe is good enough to build around. Melo will re-sign because of the $$, only the Lakers will have the space for him and playing with MDA and Kobe is not likely IMO. Sign Deng in 2014 FA, because the Bulls are not interested and he is a legit 2-way player(not a crazy overpay but, Dolan). Find a way to dump Bargs and Stat as expiring contracts for picks and whatever else, one of them will have JR attached, and sign LMA and Hibbert/Asik in 2015. This is all a bit utopian, but there are few "perfect" times to rebuild and the Suns have soooo many picks. This would leave us with potentially Smart/THJ or Shump/Deng/LMA/Hibbert in 2015 which is a beast of a squad, especially since we would have some additional picks to fill the rest out. Just a thought, a long one, but the Suns have SOOO many picks and have been clear about wanting a "Star".

rgm891
rgm891

@Sandro Guedes Sadly haha this is the honest truth. I have a feeling the Knicks would consider trading Chandler if it gets a player such as Smith off the books.  But when you put it like that, expiring deals and another first rounder def seems the better way to go.

rgm891
rgm891

@Sandro Guedes I agree man. Chandler is always getting hurt at the worst times. I believe we should get rid of him also when we can for sure. It's going to be insane seeing a totally different knicks quad in a couple of months. The knicks would be stupid not to get rid of stat now! Our best deal is shump and chandler. You think we can get a better deal. I think we should look elsewhere if the Lakers only want Chandler instead of Stat

rgm891
rgm891

@Sandro Guedes @rgm891 100% man. I am curious to see how creative they can get with adding a quality pg also. Because if the Knicks trade Shump/Stat. We have felton, Peace, 1st rounders to work with. The only way it can happen is if they add Chandler, but that just creates another problem....

knickfan2
knickfan2

Z-Bo is still a 20/10 pf in this league. He's just slow as molasses. But, at the pace we play anyway...it would suit him perfectly.

solar_lion

@Carl D Hill@Jesus BlasI'm thinking cap space means ish. Dallas had loads of it for two years but couldn't present a competitive team after cleaning house post championship season. Knicks had loads of cap space in 2010 when Magoo cleaned house. just got coal- i.e., STAT- in their socking.

Houston saved cap space while creating a competitive roster with a star in tow- see Harden. Then going into this off season convinced a legit Star to sign and leave more money on the table. See Howard's decision. Left a situation in decline for a promising situation with a star to recruit and progress to show.

Knicks need to follow that model. Accelerating cap space clearing while hurting possible competitiveness with a roster when healthy is asking to be another version of Dallas or the Knicks circa 2010 free agency.

solar_lion
solar_lion

@Tikki@Sandro Guedes Yep. Doesn't get you enough under the 2014 cap to make a bid at anyone worthy then. You're only accelareting the 2015 cap space clearing while making the team less competitive going into that free agency off season.

If the past teaches us anything is that you want to present a competitive yet cap space flexible team going into a free agency off season. Rockets did and go Dwight Howard. Knicks didn't- under Mr. Magoo's tutelage- and got coal, err, I mean Amar'e Stoudemire.

So just slow it down on all the trade scenarios. Only ones worth considering are ones that make this team competitive yet flexible cap space wise going into the summer of 2015.

Can't recruit if you're not competitive. 7th/8th seeded Houston has shown how its done. Pay attention.

Tikki
Tikki

@Sandro Guedes @Tikki Maybe I'm missing something but I still don't see the cap space here . . . if the Knicks trade Amar'e+Bargs as expirings, they will need to take back $30M in salary. And ideally, since expirings don't have much value on their own, you'd want to include Shump in a package with either of them to get a decent return. I also don't see how freeing up Tyson's ~$14M helps in this case..

Tikki
Tikki

@Sandro Guedes But I don't see the 2014 free agency "win". Kaman and Gasol are ~$20M in expirings, and Knicks are almost $30M over the cap.

Tikki
Tikki

@Carl D Hill @Tikki @Jesus Blas Yeah they're set right now.  I'm just saying that getting 1/2 season of Gasol and Kaman is worthless to the Knicks, since they wouldn't be re-signing either player to longer deals (to preserve 2015 space), nor would either player help the Knicks this season.

So I see the deal as Shump+Tyson for one 1st-round pick.  No bueno, for me at least.

Tikki
Tikki

@Jesus Blas @Tikki Yeah I got you.  I'm just thinking - since the Knicks want 2015 cap space, and Kaman and 33 year-old Gasol are expirings, to me it's basically trading Shump AND Tyson for ONE 1st-round draft pick.

I think the Knicks can do better.
