Boeheim Thinks Knicks Will Win Atlantic; Hopes Melo Will Stay

Adam Zagoria, Team Reporter

Jim Boeheim watches a lot of Knicks’ games and follows them closely, and not just because his former star Carmelo Anthony is the team’s best player.

Despite the Knicks’ rough start to this season, the Syracuse coach believes they will turn it around and win the Atlantic Division. He also said he “hopes” Anthony re-signs with the Knicks during free agency and believes New York is the best spot for him.

“I think they’re in a division they can still come back and win,” Boeheim, whose Orange are ranked No. 2 nationally, told SNY.tv. “You know, they won 54 games in that division last year and I think they can still come back. What are they out, three games?”

Carmelo AnthonyYes, despite their 7-16 record, the Knicks are only three games back of the Boston Celtics in the Atlantic.

“I think they’ll win,” Boeheim said. “I think they’ll win the division and I think they’ll get going. I think Tyson [Chandler] being out is a big factor; he anchors their defense. I think J.R. Smith’s gotta get going a little bit and eventually get [Raymond] Felton back healthy and then I think they’ll make a run and I think at the end of the day they’ll win the division.”

As of Sunday morning, only two teams in the East — Indiana and Miami — had a winning record, meaning those two teams figure to dominate the East.

“How well [the Knicks] can do in the playoffs, I don’t know,” Boeheim said. “Indiana and Miami are going to be tough to overcome.”

As for Anthony, Boeheim said he hopes he re-signs with the Knicks and believes he will, as opposed to heading to the Lakers or elsewhere.

“I think he came to New York, he likes New York, he wanted to be in New York,” Boeheim said. “I think that every player now is looking for the best place to win. Players aren’t looking for money or security. Elite players now are looking for, ‘Where can I win, where can I be in a winning championship-type team.

“That’s what I think he’ll end up looking for. I hope it’s New York. He’s a good fit for New York. He likes New York. A lot of guys aren’t that comfortable.”

The Islanders should start playing hockey. They look awful.

the way this team is playing,  just making the playoffs at this point would seem a major accomplishment. yes, the team is hurt and tired but this team is falling apart fast and the lines have to be changed. j.t. with k.o. and bailey is not working out as the other lines are really bad also. going deep in the playoffs seemed like a sure thing a few weeks ago. now, even just making the playoffs is not a sure thing.

Keep playing this way and it won't matter!

Never wish for an opponent.  You play who you play... and you go out and win...!

To win 4 games. Don't get caught up picking your opponent the way they have been playing!

First off we haven't clinched a playoff berth just yet! Second, the way this team is playing right now any of the other seven teams currently in the playoff picture would probaly beat us! That being said probaly the most favorable matchup for the Islanders right now would be Pittsburgh. For whatever reason, Fleury seems to implode when he faces the Isles. Plus several of Pitts players are hurting and Crosby (who usually lights us up) is not having a typical Crosby season!

Save the Rangers for the later round (s) serve the Rangers and their fans an even bigger let down.

Speaking of playoffs....anyone know the details on playoff tickets? Heard a rumor none are going on sale to the public? Any truth to that?

@slapshot18_rs don't know if its true, but it is possible that they allow season ticket holders the option to buy more seats, as well as the people who bought those overpriced mini packages to but more as well ...the same way the final home game was blacked out

@jmoney93 @slapshot18_rs  I do know season ticket holders are allowed to buy additional seats up to as many seats they have in the regular season (ex. has 2 seats, can buy an additional 2 for playoffs)

The islanders ticket office is a lying, lazy, pathetic department. I can't even begin to tell you the headache dealing with them this year was. Long story short, they never printed my playoff tickets last week, so In turn I never got them in mail this week. Called today to find out the deal, and you can tell that they forgot me! So they printed my tickets today (which they would never admit too) and I'm left with the scrapes. They suck over there, worst people ever. They are crooks, they withheld games from us, and they lied to us. Ticket last row to March 10 ranger game - $135. There had to be something legally wrong with that.

I would like to see the Isles enter the play-offs healthy, confident and with some of that offensive swagger back that we have seemed to have lost. I hope our coaching staff is up to the task of preparing the team and that the PK & PP are in good form. I believe we can beat anyone if our game is right  and if its not, any team in the PO can knock us out. I hope we give the Old Barn a proper send off.

Brian it would be nice if you checked this web site once in a while. If you did you would find out that the NY Knick point blank comments have infiltrated this Islander web site. Is anybody awake over there. First and foremost lets hope the Islanders make the playoffs. A few more losses in a row and its really going to start to get hairy. Washington is 4 points behind us with the same amount of games played and Boston is 8 points back with 2 games in hand. Ottawa is 13 points back with 3 games in hand. It looks good for the Islanders but they have to start winning some games starting with tonight.

@Brian Erni @mrcisback Ok Brian thank you very much. I was unaware it was happening on the other sites also. I apologize for my comment then.

@mrcisback I don't know why it happens, but it's not just an IPB glitch. It has happened over at SNY Nets, too, where MetsBlog comments will occasionally pop up. We're aware of the situation and working to correct it. Rest assured, we're awake.

Kevin Sharkey
Kevin Sharkey

@mrcisback It will be impossible for the Isles to miss the playoffs this season. Even if Ottawa wins ALL 3 games in hand they will still have to make up 7 points. If the Isles win just 3 more games they are back to being 13 points behind. Do you really think that the Isles will not win at least 3 of the last 11?

mrcisback
mrcisback

@Kevin Sharkey @mrcisback Kevin i fully expect the Islanders to make the playoffs but its not impossible for a team to collapse. Look at the Mets a few years ago. 7 game lead in 1st place with 17 games to go and they miss the playoffs. Put it this way i'll feel a lot better when the Islanders clinch a spot.

Every team is a good team come April.  I'm not a fan of "wanting to play a certain team".  I've seen teams get swept in the regular season against an opponent, only to win the playoff series that same year.  Just get there in relatively good health.  Try to get home ice in the first round.  Then deal with whoever the opponent is.

@since72 Exactly, well put...bring them on, one way or the other, its a new season. Heck, for all we know, maybe the other teams may be wishing their not the ones having to meet the Isles in the first round.

Let's make the playoffs first before we start talking about opponents.  A couple more losses, and things will be extremely tight.

It doesn't matter who we face just win the battles

I have to say Brian, since you've been writing for Point Blank i have enjoyed your articles( except for the Bailey article...ill chalk that up to you having a bad day). You seem miles ahead of any other writer here and I have actually started coming back here everyday for news on the isles.
