Carmelo Anthony

Boeheim weighs in on Carmelo’s choice

Jim Boeheim said Monday he believes if Carmelo Anthony had based his free-agency decision on basketball alone, Chicago was a better choice than New York (ESPN, Aug. 18).

“Just from a basketball point of view it would have been better to go to Chicago because they’ve got better players,” the Syracuse coach told reporter Ian Begley. “But he wanted to be in New York and he wants to see if they can turn it around there. I think that’s a great thing.”

Anthony re-signed with the Knicks over the summer for five years and $124 million. The Bulls had enough cap space to offer Anthony a $74 million contract and could have increased their offer to a max contract of four years and $96 million in a sign-and-trade. But the Knicks never discussed such a deal.

Boeheim, who won an NCAA title with Anthony in 2003, believes players such as Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and newcomer Pau Gasol give the Bulls the talent edge on the Knicks.

“I think anybody would agree with that. That’s not rocket science,” Boeheim told Begley after Team USA practiced at West Point.

Boeheim also told Begley that Anthony probably would have left New York if team president Phil Jackson wasn’t there.

“I would think so. He stayed because he believes Phil,” Boeheim said. “(New coach) Derek Fisher, he knows the game. If you’re going to pick a coach who hasn’t coached, he would be the guy I would pick. I think he’s a great choice . . . I think they’ll show significant improvement this year. If they get a couple of guys down the road, I think they’ll be good.”

We still have an unbalanced roster, and one of the big challenges for Fisher will be settling on a rotation and doling out minutes.  Unlike most teams, everyone on our 15 man roster will probably be expecting to play, so many will be disappointed.  Look at how many minutes our players averaged last year, as a floor on what they probably expect:

Carmelo Anthony, 38.7
J.R. Smith,  32.7
Jose Calderon,  30.5
Andrea Bargnani,  29.9
Jason Smith,  26.8
Iman Shumpert,  26.5
Tim Hardaway Jr.,  23.1
Amar'e Stoudemire,  22.6
Samuel Dalembert,  20.2
Pablo Prigioni, 19.4
Travis Outlaw,  16.9
Quincy Acy,  13.4
Shane Larkin, 10.2
Cole Aldrich, 7.2
Cleanthony Early  ?
= 318.1 + Early

Add to this that most of us would like to see Early get some minutes (say 10), and Aldrich get increased minutes (say 15-20) and that grows to 338.  Where would you trim 100 mins from the above?  And how to manage the disappointment?

Say what you want about Boeheim, but he supports Melo 24/7. He could made better statements, but his heart is in the right place.

Six weeks ago, Boeheim said that Melo should join the Bulls because Chicago gave Melo a chance to win. A month ago, he said the Knicks were the right choice because there were no guarantees with the Bulls. Now, I really have no idea what he's thinking. The problem is neither does he.

Biggest bottlenecks:

SG
J.R. Smith,  32.7
Iman Shumpert,  26.5
Tim Hardaway Jr.,  23.1

If Melo plays SF, where will all these guys play?  I predict either a trade, of some time at PF for Melo...

C

Andrea Bargnani,  29.9
Jason Smith,  26.8

Amar'e Stoudemire,  22.6
Samuel Dalembert,  20.2

Cole Aldrich, 15

I know some of these guys have historically been PFs, but IMO they all play better at center at this point.

SF

Melo 38.7
Travis Outlaw,  16.9
Quincy Acy,  13.4
Cleanthony Early  10

PG

Jose Calderon,  30.5
Pablo Prigioni, 19.4

Shane Larkin, 10.2

McBuckets, Gibson , Hinrich and the Euro.... Go Knicks, but unfortunately, they will be better than us this year...

I definitely agree. If and that's a big if.the Bulls stay healthy, they are the better team. We'll see.

I agree. Also most likely they do not get Gasol if they get Melo. So including him isn't really fair in this comparison.

Exactly. He knows how Melo feels and also gives him advice.

@Marvel_

With Melo, its a team with Rose, Noah, Melo, and Butler.  They lose Boozer, don't get Gasol, lose Taj

Without Melo, its a team with Rose, Noah, Gasol, Butler, Taj.  They lose Boozer.

I think he specified that the main teammates were Noah and Rose with Melo and that without Melo, they at least have Gasol.

That said, I think its partially true.  Melo goes there and Rose, Noah, and Butler are still good.  A bad Rose (which is what I expect) is still as good as a good JR Smith, who is our #2 on the team.  And No one gets close to Noah on our team either.

That said, only way that team is better than us is if Rose gets to his all-star status of 23+ppg and 6 ast...which I don't think he will do.

@johneco It's fair and logical to assume that on some nights certain players won't play.  That's the way of the nba.

@BiggieTKB @johneco  You're very right about the injuries.  But no one is injured right now, so the difficulty is all on the coach to choose, and to keep the unchosen involved.

@KingTkb @johneco  Usually the young guys get some time early in the season to see what they've got...

I give u one outta four on that one(Gibson). Kirk is cooked food, Doug Teach me how to McDougie..whom I like but is TBD.. as well as the Euro. I contest the Knicks had they fired Woodson and benched Burger boy after the 20th game last year would hv faired much better..people act like the roster was laughable..however when we were healthy we ran with the best of them.

@greekfreak

Admitting this doesn't make anyone any less of a Knick fan...it is what it is.  At full health (and possibly less), the Bulls project to be a better, more talented, and more balanced team than the Knicks.  And saying this doesn't mean that Knicks can't pull off an improbable upset come playoff time.  That's why they play the games.

greekfreak
greekfreak

@jahrock. Exactly. A huge IF... Taking nothing from the Knicks, we have some horrible contracts to shed..2015-2016 should be a different story

greekfreak
greekfreak

They made the playoffs last year with no Rose and a wobbly Noah... We didn't with Melo and company... Not sure what I'm missing, but if Melo is on that team this year, without Gasol and Boozer, they are a lot better than us, maybe even contending for the chip... We aren't gonna make it past the second round, if that, with the team we have right now... Hopefully we are better off in the long run, but that's yet to be seen.. If Rose can stay healthy, that's a big IF, with the addition of that Euro and Gasol, plus Rose, Butler, Noah and Gibson, their not looking to shabby... We do have them beat in the head of bball operations dept. and our owner spends, but not always wisely.. They have us beat in the coaching dept. Hopefully Phil changes all that

greekfreak
greekfreak

@jimm1200. In all honesty, they were better than us last year, without Rose... Thibs teaches great defense, which wins games. Their backup pg, Augustine, was better than our starter. I hate to admit it, but the Bulls roster was/is better than ours. That being said, I'm am extremely happy he stayed!

looks to me like theyre already making excuses for Melo not going to the finals again

@johneco. Stat and BarnBoy are always injured... Give it 5 games into the season

greekfreak
greekfreak

Kirk is still better than our back up... I will guarantee they have more wins than us... Being loyal is one thing, being blind and oblivious is another... The Bulls didn't trade 2 picks for McBuckets for nothing... Just because the owner is cheap, doesn't mean the GM is dumb..

greekfreak

Everyone is getting on Boeheim for stating the facts.. I'm a realist, but some here obviously aren't. We can definitely pull off an upset in the playoffs, against a team like Atlanta or Toronto. I highly doubt it will be against the Bulls, Cleveland or maybe even Miami, with our current roster..

jahrock

Boiheim isn't an apologist for Melo,so you're off track there..
