Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo can sign today, but no news yet…

Carmelo Anthony can officially sign with an NBA team today.

After Wednesday’s story that he is going to re-join the Knicks (or is he?), New York fans are waiting for news. So far, on Thursday morning, nothing new to report.

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported, according to friends of Melo, that Anthony “believes in Phil [Jackson]” and would be re-signing with the Knicks. Other sources, including SNY’s Adam Zagoria, heard from sources that things are still up in the air and no final decision has been made.

The other teams who are in the running for Melo — the Lakers, Bulls, Rockets and Mavericks — still have not been told of any decision (Popper, July 10).

Remember, the Knicks can offer more money than any other team, a max contract of $129 million over five years.

The Melo sweepstakes continues, but perhaps the Knicks are finally clearly and comfortably the front-runners, and with good reason. New York appears to be the best option for Anthony, if due to nothing else than the fact that his other options may be dwindling.

The Cavaliers are making moves in anticipation of signing LeBron James. The Rockets are chasing Chris Bosh (perhaps convinced they won’t sign Anthony). Each respective departure from Miami also counts out the Heat for Anthony’s services. The Mavericks have signed Chandler Parsons to a larger than life offer sheet.

What’s more, the Bulls may also be preparing to move on from Anthony, as they reportedly explore a sign & trade opportunity for Pau Gasol.  While this may put a wrench in the Knicks’ ultimate pipe dream to pair up the Lakers’ big man with Anthony, it helps the likelihood of Anthony returning to New York go up.

The Knicks can offer the fame, fortune, and bright lights that Anthony continues to crave as a top notch superstar. Four years ago, James and Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami to create a super power of sorts, also known as the Big Three. This obviously created a ripple effect across the league, enticing stars like Anthony to explore potential avenues that saw themselves teaming up with other superstars as well.

But as James eyes a return to Cleveland, perhaps such a trend is changing. With the Cavaliers, the star would not only be the highest paid player on his team, but he’d also lead a new charge with young up and coming studs following his example.

With Phil Jackson now aiming to mold the Knicks into a contender, Anthony would, of course, be looked upon to lead his squad in similar fashion.

Ray Nagin is going to miss the whole length of Melo's next contract. Unless of course they have the League Pass in prison.

IN OTHER NEWS...KATRINA MAYOR GETS 10:

NEW ORLEANS— Ray Nagin, the former mayor who rose to national prominence leading this city during Hurricane Katrina, was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in federal prison for his participation in a $500,000 bribery and conspiracy scheme that operated during most of his time in office.

U.S. District Judge Helen G. Berrigan told a packed courtroom that Mr. Nagin, 58 years old, was guilty of "rampant, inexcusable corruption," but she ruled that his sentence should be shorter than the federal guidelines of a minimum of more than 15½ years because he was a devoted family man, had at times been a good mayor and wouldn't hold office again.

I will say it is making Melo look a little weak, waiting around for Lebron to make up his mind.  Especially when it ends up that he stays here anyway.  Lebron is making everyone look like they can't win without him.  I wonder how Tony Parker and Timmy D feel about all of this.

My crystal ball is working!

1) Melo will sign before the season starts.

2) He will sign with..... Oops, it's cloudy again! Dagnabit!

My sources are telling me that LeBron likes Starbucks. He is going to buy an expansion team, and play for the Sonics.

If everyone is waiting on Lebron, then what is Lebron waiting on?

My theory -

He has given Gilbert, Phil (maybe), and Riley a timeline - get me either Melo or K. Love and I'm coming.

Let them fight it out, and then sign with whomever comes up big.

BUT NOTHING is out of the question right now. watch it be

Lebron to Minnesota

Melo to Minnesota

Bosh to Cleveland

Wade to Chicago

because at this point, why not.

Melo could be waiting for Phil to make more moves to improve the roster. By not signing, he increases the pressure on the front office.

@JesusBlasTheKnickWay question..

as it stands now.  The knicks have 59 mil on the books.  They can renounce and waive dalembert and odom to clear an additional 4 mil.

that would put them at 55 mil.  can't they sign Gasol at 8 mil to put them right at the cap? And then, sign Melo bc they any team can re-sign their own players and still go over the cap.

I ask bc I heard that's what Houston wants to do with Bosh and Parsons..

@lindro88 We don't know if he's waiting for Lebron. More likely he wants Phil to get Stat out of here.

@tkb2pac I just hope Melo takes just a 1 mil paycut so people would stop it with that crap.

At the end of the day, it's the man upstairs willing to extend that offer. So start there.

MAD cuz you were WRONG?

@Knicks_Fanatic Keep hearing this, but it doesn't make sense to me. If Phil could improve the team, don't you think he would, regardless of pressure from Melo?

Now if you think Melo specifically has beef with someone and wants them gone first, then that might compute.

lindro88

@knicksgirl35 @lindro88  I hope that is the case. It seems like he's waiting on Lebron.  Maybe that is just the way its being portrayed.

VerySilentJay

@saintknick @Knicks_Fanatic Nah. Nitpicking on that one.

Most key players are standing pat and teams are waiting for the higher profile players to make their decisions.

Once that happens, the rest of the chips will fall accordingly.

Wasn't there a train of thought that any signing of big players would have to be done before melo signs to avoid cap issues?

knicksgirl35

@lindro88 Everybody thinks everybody is waiting on Lebron. I couldn't care any less about Lebron. His ego is waaaay off the charts and it's the media's fault for the most part. The svck on him like a big old Disneyland lollipop.

saintknick
saintknick

@samb Doesn't matter unless the Knicks are below the cap/apron (depending on whether FA sigining or S&T)

Melo counts against the cap either way - until he is renounced. Right now, you can consider him "signed" for cap purposes until and if he doesn't sign.

BUT it could matter if he takes less $$. Knicks would still need to move Stat +.

lindro88
lindro88

@knicksgirl35  More importantly, when is Melo gonna sign his 130 million dollar contract...lol

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@saintknick @Knicks_Fanatic

Far fetched perhaps, but what if Melo tells Phil give me a reason to take less and I will. Phil says, if I can move STAT and you take less, we can sign Gasol. Melo says OK, make your moves and let me know how much less, it would be. Otherwise, I want the max.

saintknick
saintknick

@Knicks_Fanatic @saintknick It is possible. He also might have said he wants to play with Lebron and so everyone has to wait because unless the Knicks can get Lebron to commit AND clear the space, Melo won't sign until Lebron does and the option to move is foreclosed.

Melo could also be waiting on a private investigation into whether Phil has been using his Zen to sleep with Lala, so he can give the finger to both and go move in with Jeanie in LA.

He might also be on a yoga-hiatus where he refuses to pick up a phone.

He, Lebron, Wade, Bosh, K. Love, and Kobe may be waiting for Michael Jordan to sell his stake in the Hornets and go start a NEW basketball league with hookers and beer.
