Carmelo Anthony told reporters that he was notified that Phil Jackson will be joining the team’s front office a few days ago.
Anthony has never spoken to Jackson in his NBA career.
As for how Jackson will impact Carmelo’s future plans, the superstar said it won’t affect him.
“I don’t think it’ll have any effect on me, just as far as what I’m thinking, my decision or anything like that,” Anthony said (Iannazzone, March 12). “I haven’t talked to Phil yet, just to get his insight on a lot of things, what’s his plan, what’s his future plan, because everything’s in his hands now.”
Sam SpiegelmanI think it’s crazy for Carmelo Anthony or for anybody to believe Phil Jackson’s presence in the Knicks organization won’t impact free agency, even in the slightest bit.
Time and time again, Anthony has stated that winning is his ultimate goal. Well, who knows more about winning than an 11-time NBA championship-winning coach in Jackson, who also earned a pair of titles as a player.
Jackson doesn’t have front-office experience. I say so what! He knows how to assemble a championship-caliber team, because clearly he had a say in both Chicago and Los Angeles. With the Knicks, he theoretically could put together pieces around Anthony to make the Knicks a championship contender, but if Anthony isn’t interested in hearing from the Zen Master, Jackson can assemble a team with new players.
If Anthony is wise, he should just remain stark about winning championships and play the rest of the season out. The Knicks are only 3.5 games out of the No. 8 seed in the East and the Jackson news — while welcomed — is just another way to bring up this summer.
