Adam ZagoriaKnicks coach Mike Woodson announced that Tyson Chandler, Andrea Bargnani, Carmelo Anthony, Pablo Prigioni and Raymond Felton will start for the Knicks in their first preseason game Wednesday night against the Celtics in Providence.
Woodson continues to say that J.R. Smith could be the team’s starting shooting guard over Iman Shumpert once Smith recovers from knee surgery and serves his five-game drug suspension.
Al Iannazzone of Newsday tweeted from shootaround: “Woodson said he is going to give JR Smith a chance but Shumpert ‘has a jump’ on J.R. because he’s healthy.”
Woodson has said that he would like to go with a big starting lineup.
“I’d like to go with a big lineup with Raymond and either J.R. or Iman at the two [-guard],’’ Woodson told reporters Tuesday. “If I can get to that point where they’re competing [for it]. We’ll see how it plays out.’’
Woodson told reporters Shumpert has battled knee soreness after coming back from ACL surgery, but is OK now.
The Knicks left Smith, Amar’e Stoudemire and Jeremy Tyler — all injured — home for the three-game road swing that includes games Friday in Toronto and Saturday in Manchester, N.H., against the Celtics.
