Charles Barkley: ‘The Knicks need players’; Greg Anthony: Phil brings ‘credibility’

Adam Zagoria, Team Reporter

Charles Barkley says the Knicks need one thing and it’s not necessarily Phil Jackson.

“The Knicks need players,” Barkely told SNY.tv and The Knicks Blog Wednesday at a brunch promoting CBS Sports and TNT’s coverage of the NCAA Tournament.

Asked what kind of impact Jackson could make in the front office, Barkley said, “I don’t know, they’ve got to bring in players. It’s all about players, man. The coach is not their problem, but they’ve got to get players.”

The Knicks have limited cap space and no draft pick in 2014 so it’s unclear where they would get those players from.

“He can’t do much,” Barkley said of Jackson. “He’s just got to be patient, but that’s not what everybody wants to hear.”

Greg Anthony, the former Knicks point guard who will also be working the NCAA Tournament, said he thinks Jackson could help change the culture of the Knicks.

“I think the first thing it does is it gives your organization tremendous credibility,” Anthony said. “When you’re trying to change your culture and create one of success, you have to have credibility. Everybody can tell you the right things but it doesn’t always resonate. The credibility he brings to the table will allow it to resonate.

“And don’t think for one second that this wouldn’t enhance the opportunity of Carmelo [Anthony] coming back and it would be the first significant sign that this front office and this team has shown a commitment to winning after having such a disastrous season.”

In response to Barkley’s comments about needing players, Anthony said, “You can create players, you can get players, you can change your culture. No matter what they got, some of those guys on that roster have to come back just by virtue of the nature of the business. You also have to make those guys better players, more accountable.

“Yeah, they gotta get some better players, there’s no doubt about it, but they’ll have an opportunity to participate vis-a-vis trades and free agency to a certain extent. No doubt about it, Phil Jackson’s not going to win games for them but he’s going to help create an environment that’s going to allow them to become more successful.”

This is monumental. In a season that has been tortuous for Knick fans, we can actually feel good about this turn of events.

Article is an awesome read thanks to 1harris1 pointing it out.  Phil wants to help the Knicks become relevant again. Reading this article just proves this fact even more.  Obviously the money and benefits are great. but I believe this means more to Phil than people are speculating.

There’s no doubt Red took special affection toward our relationship,” Jackson told The Post in 2004, when he was about to break Red Auerbach’s coaching-title record. “He always called me after a winning season. When it was Bulls-Knicks in the conference finals, he always made a point of seeking me out, right up until the end. I’m sure he’s somewhere up there smiling down.”

Never forget where you came from!!!!

If this goes down the way isola says it is, laker fans can't really be mad. The fans have to know that the Buss' s ego is so large, they would never in a million years give PJ part stake in the team.

Who in their right mind would turn down a deal like that?

15% in a publicly traded company the worth how much? Who wouldn't.

The Post is now reporting that Jackson and the Knicks have "a deal in principle".  His title will be "president":.

I think another commenter had stated that this article was up before, and then taken down.  It's up again.

Interesting article by Isola just posted  in the NY Daily News.  Bill Bradley has apparently been involved in the negotiations with Phil (recruited by Dolan).  Plus, there is talk that Phil is possibly getting a minority ownership share in the team (in addition to a yearly salary of possibly more than 15 million).

Dolan is pulling out all the stops.  As for Phil, when you possess an ownership interest in a professional sports franchise, you'll probably be around for awhile..

Not trying to rain on the parade, but have any of Jackson's ex-assistant coaches had any success?  Rambis was a flop, and Shaw looks like he's heading down the same road.

The Pistons got a win tonight vs the Kings.  Was expected though.....Still what a fail.

It would be more than stupid for Dolan to be faking this and using it as a smoke screen or a distraction. If PJ is not hired by the 19th then the Rally will still take place.

@orlando_knickfan I never believed that stuff about him angling to go back to the Lakers anyway.  Jim Buss and Phil reportedly can't stand one another. If the Lakers had wanted him involved with the team, it would have happened already.

@1harris1  I dont see the article?  I see the previous one about a few hours ago but it doesnt display the article and states page isn't found.  That's insane though

I'd assume that since MSG is a publicly traded company, Phil will get stock options.

@Knicks_Fanatic I'm encouraged though by the fact that Phil is taking his time to work out the parameters of his authority with Dolan.  Seems to me that if he was just in it for the payday (like many are saying), he would have just taken the job already.  While Dolan is always going to be a problem, at least Phil is giving indications that his heart is truly in this.

orlando_knickfan

@1harris1 Exactly. They are so accustomed to having it all, they can't stand seeing their guy doing something not affiliated with the Lakers.

@1harris1 @Knicks_Fanatic

I look at it this way. Everyone knows that Dolan will cave, Phil can just keep asking for more and wait for Dolan to give in. Dolan needs him for cover far more than Phil needs a job. Dolan has no choice.

1harris1..

Im thinking the same.

@illmatix  He's likely to bring in his own people at pretty much every level of the organization.

There will likely be a few untouchables, like H20, Starks, Mills, etc.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Herb was offered a gig in the FO to finally get his @ss out of the bench.

Sandro

@illmatix

I make jokes about every player, not only Carmelo. I even make fun of players I like. It's just my way of dealing with things.

But I can see some guys really hate Carmelo to a putrid level. As much as I can see some guys really love him beyond comprehension.

For every ying, there's a yang...
TradeCarmelo's hate for Melo evens out with Kiyan's love for him lol.

@StraightShot @illmatix

I am not a Carmelo fan, as I don't appreciate his style of play, but I can acknowledge his talents and respect his game.

This TradeCarmelo dude just takes it to an whole different level lol.

@illmatix  Disrupting the CAA and Phil Jackson making bball decision.  This is a miracle!!!! How can Knick fans not smile.  When this happens I cannot wait to see how he approaches everything.  Even assistant coaches will be amazing.

@StraightShot

I don't think so either and agree with you on Dolan's "genius." Look at the leaks

1) Decision on Monday.

2) We are close.

3) Phil's camp reports they are not close.

4) Ironing out details and announcement now next week.

BigChiefTriangle
BigChiefTriangle

@Knicks_Fanatic @StraightShot

Oh I believe Dolan cares about PR.  I just don't believe his moves are solely driven by PR. I also don't always think a delay automatically means "yup, all part of Dolan's genius PR plan"

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@StraightShot @Knicks_Fanatic

Hiring Phil Jackson and getting PR are not mutually exclusive. Dolan has an interesting history. Remember when Jeremy Lin hurt his knee and Dolan waited until after the playoff tickets were sold to announce he was going under the knife. That delay was purposeful.  This leak is purposeful as well.

Dolan has a draconian media policy and has a spy that follows Woody around. If you want to believe that his public image isn't a major focus for the organization, so be it.

BigChiefTriangle
BigChiefTriangle

@Knicks_Fanatic  If giving 11+champion Phil Jackson the Knicks' head front office position is purely a PR stunt to temper the protest flames, then mission accomplished.

BigChiefTriangle
BigChiefTriangle

@Knicks_Fanatic  So any of these delays must be part of Dolan's masterful PR plan to drag these rumors out as long as possible?

Before I thought it was that they were eliminating Jax from consideration by leaking that he  turned down the job?

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@StraightShot @Knicks_Fanatic@1harris1

Dolan is hiring Phil to counter all the bad PR and give the fans hope. That's the "Hope-a-Dope" and you can already see the effect here on TKB. No one is talking about firing Woody, a mass protest, no draft picks, being over the cap, and the slew of bad contracts we have. It's all about how Phil Jackson will lure stars to the Mecca with his 11 rings and compete for a championship.

These are rumors. The Knicks have not officially stated anything. They are leaking like an old boat. First Phil was going to sign yesterday, now it's next week.
