Chris Smith hoping to join brother J.R. on the Knicks

Now that J.R. Smith has officially signed with the Knicks, his younger brother Chris is looking to make it into the pros, as well.

Chris is in Nevada, playing for the Knicks’ summer league team. Last season Chris participated in the Knicks’ training camp, but suffered a knee injury and was eventually waived.

He decided to stay with New York, and that decision has helped him grow as a player, according to Newsday.

Now that Jason Kidd has retired, the Knicks may be looking for new point guards, a position that Chris is hoping to fill. And playing with his brother wouldn’t be hurt, either.

“My goal is to make training camp, make the team and have the brotherly tandem that everyone has been talking about,” Chris said.

If Snow gets a top 4 d-man Isles make play-offs. If he doesn't they won't.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Viz on the DL before the season starts. If things go bad you can bet bet Viz will get "hurt" again. Guy is not that good in his own end, plays soft because of concussion history and will sit out as often as he can.

Of course there are questions...just like for every team starting the season. Is Viz going to show up to play...even if his finger nail hurts? Is Reinhart ready for prime time? Can DeHahn build on his decent first year? I mean, every team has questions!

I agree about Brennan. He's got a lot to give. It's reclaim projects that work for Garth. If I'm a bottom 6 forward I would be ready for camp. If not you are gonna lose your job. Top 6 are as follows

Lee Tavares okposo

Nelson grabovski kulimen

I think lee wins the spot on the too line. He puts in 35 with jt91.

As far as defence. I still think phanuef is heading our way. He would be a totally different player here. No pressure for him. He can't play with all the hype. I would ship Bailey Donovan McDonald for phanuef. I'm not sure about Donavan. We got a lot of studs on defence.

Our goaltending is going to be fun to watch this year. They are solid. So it the D that's need a couple of fixes and then we are good to go. That's how I feel. If they can't get phanuef. Try mike green in wash.

Anyone know which teams out there have an overabundance of D-men but could use a couple of forwards?

<< "the Isles still could use another top-4 defenseman. The Islanders certainly have the pieces to execute a deal, but it is unclear if or when such will take place." >>

Any other GM in the NHL would have made a deal by now for a top 4 veteran D-man, maybe two. We're overloaded with forwards. And we don't need an all-star 27 year old D-man, just a solid 34+ year old who could give us a year or two or three until our prospects develop. A guy like that will cost far less in a trade. A deal could be made if the Isles management wanted to, but their usual incompetence and deer-in-the-headlights seem to rule.

I also believe this Brennan kid is going to be great for this team. Anytime you make a team angry for taking a player from them (Leafs), it shows that he's got some skill. I hope Cappy is smart and lets the kid play!

I think practicing with top offensive talent, this young core of d-men can turn out to be very good. I know, it's the same BS about time, but with all the kids we drafted, some have too be good...right? Now we have good goal tending, that should cut down on how many games we've lost leading by 2 or more goals. I HATE saying give it time, but I believe we're not far from having a solid d-core.

if d is a problem out of the gate, a top vet d is important. hopefully snow wont pull off another awlfull deal such as nino for clutterbust & moulson & top picks for a rental &. get fleeced big time like he usually does. if he thinks clutterbust & bailey are so great, he should trade them for a top vet d man.

Seems like this site is getting stale, while I appreciate the effort from the writers and we shouldn't have articles about no news. Maybe we can create some news on the young guys that have a chance to play. The season will be starting soon, many of us don't know all the guys that have a chance to play. I am writing this only as a suggestion, I truly appreciate the effort just some friendly criticism.

Lets hope Isles don't come out the gate w/ this D lineup.....Vish/Hammer-Hickey/Strait-DeHann/Rienhart. Knowing Caps that's exactly what he'll do. Here's what I'd prefer Vish/Reinhart-Dehann/Hamonic-Brennan/Cuzman,Hickey or Strait. Take hammer off the PP & give Brennan a shot there. Hopefully during the season Brennan can move up after Vish gets hurt. I want to stress that the pairings I suggested should allow for more balance throughout the D while also developing the young guys. Does anyone think Isles will win more w/ Vish/Hickey/Strait/Hamonic all getting top minutes & PP time? I sure as hell don't. Let the kids play some important minutes that in itself should keep Cappy from wearing out Vish/Hamonic & wasting important minutes on Hickey/Strait.

The whole league has been quiet after free agency. With Snow's failed attempt to land Dan Boyle, I'm sure he'll go for another player. Especially with new ownership watching...

I think this d keeps us out of the playoffs imo.

Defense is worst in tbe league. How they didnt sign anyone is beyond me. Still some solid D-men out there, hope they let loose and sign 1 or 2 solid expetienced defensemen.

Please give me a break with Lubomir Visnovsky. The guy was horrible last year and was absolutely invisible on most plays. Visnovsky is a mere shell of a player he was 3 or 4 years ago. The only thing the guy had to offer was offense and thats not even there any more. We always seem to get these veterans when they have nothing left in the tank. Its time to move on. I'd rather give a young guy a shot.

Marc Rodway
Marc Rodway

The lack of a solid veteran on D has me concerned. The only guy who has many years of experience and can play is Viz and you cannot count on him to either be healthy or stay healthy. Also the lack of offense from the defense right now is something to be aware of. I suppose DeHaan and Hamonic have potential there but the jury is still out on both of their offensive game.

Jason Zimmermann
Jason Zimmermann

The Islanders haven't had a top-notch defenseman since Denis Potvin. Mathieu Schneider had a cup of coffee here, and while Kenny Jonsson was highly intelligent, he wasn't at all intimidating.  In terms of toughness and skill, Bryan McCabe  and Bryan Berard just might be the closest we've come. Not a huge statement.

Outside of goaltending and offensive output, defense has been a major soft spot for the Islanders since 1988.

@dimaio34 Phanuef is not longer a stud but he is a top 4 d-man. Think like the other GM, would you trade a top 4 d-man for a guy who has proved nothing in 5 years (Bailey), a 4th liner (McDonald) and a guy who is no better than a 5 or 6 d-man (Donovan)? Other teams don't exist to help the Isles. It would take Bailey or Grabner and a Pullock type to get Pheneuf. Top 4 Ds don't come cheap. I might move A Pullock and a fwd but it would have to be for a better top 4 than Pheneuf.

@puckdad99  Heck you would think that teams like Hawks,Kings,Bruins,Leafs,Ducks,Caps just to name a few would be in cap hell needing some friendly salary coming back if any at all. I agree w/ the fans that realize the D acquired doesn't need to be a star but provide vet leadership to go along w/ solid defensive play.

I don't know if he can be had but Phoenix needs O and they have some young D coming up not to mention Ekman-Larsson. Maybe Yandle?

@nymarc agreed.  I understand its tough to write in the off season but what about Barclay's ticket sales...how about off season workouts and whose coming to camp with 10 new pounds of muscle...what about about pokka and his expectations.  How about interviewing former islanders and asking them their greatest coliseum regular season memory...

If you don't want to do it give me the credentials and I will make the calls.

@dinbigd - Agree about Brennan getting a chance on the PP and possibly replacing an injured Vis. Just want to see if his defensive game is strong.

I disagree about taking Hickey away from the PP though. He has very good possession numbers and has shown to make smart plays on the offensive, in my opinion of course...

@Mrc- like who? What young guy you want to give a shot? Besides Reinhart, what young guy do you think is ready to play 82 nights on the NHL blue line.

Who do you want to be the Isles top 6 for game 1?

And I am still waiting to see all your posts you were bragging on a while back. You wrote a ton of trash, I dared you to back it up.. Still waiting...

Agree on DeHann not so much on Hamonic. 1st things 1st you have to hit the net to score & Hamonic is on record saying its harder than fans think. That comment from him leads me to believe he is never going to be any kind of offensive threat. IMO you either have "it" or you don't & Hamonic doesn't. He can still serve a purpose but not as a top Dman especially on the PP.His game imo has slipped all around & that may be due to Cap expecting too much from him logging too many minutes. A vet or 2 not looking to retire would be nice as well.

@Jason Zimmermann actually, they drafted and at one time possessed the best defenseman in the league these past many years: chara. chalk up another front-office blunder courtesy of mad mike. too bad he couldn't get ottawa to take someone else for yashin. it's amazing how charles has hired and continued to retain abysmal front-office management. if either milbury or snow had leadership posts in corporate America they would have been shown the door after one strike, let alone dozens. and that includes if either worked for charles during his CA heyday. if you didn't get it done in Islandia you were gone. it was perform or look for work elsewhere. that's the confusing part of the charles wang era. he has been a totally different leader as owner of the isles than how he conducted himself while building the empire that made him the money to buy the team. i have been scratching my head over this for many years. maybe his actions were cleverly designed to demonstrate to the government that he really is aloof re: what goes on under his nose.

dimaio34
dimaio34

No haven't heard just know the fans always get ticked at him. He's a great d man. I see past his errors and feel on a team with no pressure your getting a really good player. I don't really want to move bailey. But I feel there's going to be changed in our bottom 6. Camp is going to be ferocious!!!!!!!!!

dimaio34

Not sure but he was ahl defence man of the year. That says something

dinbigd

@dkdk  He would definitely be a welcomed addition but at what cost? I would have to think the conversation starts w/ Strome & that's ok by me but hopefully Garth doesn't get fleeced. I will also add that if it is Strome than the next available players to be asked for better be in the bottom 6 forwards. People will say gotta give to get but that works both ways.

dinbigd
dinbigd

@elephant  Yeah good point on Hickey but Garth seems to have a lot of young D prospects that have a high offensive ceiling so I'd like to see them get their opportunities. I mean Hickey could still get PP time as well just don't pencil him there permanently is all. Also our debate is moot if Brennan doesn't make the team.

mrcisback

@rmbbanned I don't know whats wrong with you. No matter what the topic is you just like to argue with people. Every day on this web site you argue with somebody different. Are you sure your not Charles Wang himself. Like i said several times on this web site that it shouldn't be too hard to improve on the 28th worst rated defense in the league. I also said the Islanders defense will drastically change in the next couple of years. The Islanders have excellent defensive prospects in Griffen Reinhart, Ryan Pulock, Ville Pokka, Calvin De haan, Adam Pelech,Kevin Czucman and Scott Mayfield to name a few. Griffen Reinhart should have made the team last year since he was the best player in camp. Pulock and Pokka came off excellent seasons with their respected teams. I also said that if just 2 of these prospects turn out to be very good defenseman then the Islanders defense will drastically change for the better. I also said the Islanders need to trade for a top 3 or 4 defenseman before the season starts. I read Snow is talking to Chicago about Nick Leddy and Toronto's Dion Phaneuf. I'm not crazy about any of the Islander defenseman now but if i had to name my top 7 It would be Hamonic, De Haan, Griffen Reinhart, Matt Donovan,Kevin Czucman, Matt Carkner because he's one of the few that will fight and either Pulock, Pokka or Mayfield.

No top 4 defenders available unless you willing to seriously overpay.. If a team moves a top 4 defender, does it have another to take his place. Most NHL teams won't weaken their defense to improve their attack.

You can't buy/ trade what isn't for sale.

Viz is not overrated when he suits up. Look up the Isles record when he plays, along with goals allowed. Viz just needs to stay concussion free. They can't move him until the trade deadline- terms of his contract.

Jason Zimmermann
Jason Zimmermann

@kicksave Of course, how could I forget about Zdeno Chara? Maybe it's because we've had 68 zillion players on the roster over the past 19 years.

puckdad99

@dinbigd @dkdk

<< "He would definitely be a welcomed addition but at what cost?" >>

Exactly. Which is why I say go for an older quality vet who only has a couple of years left in him. They'll be A LOT cheaper. The experience and mentoring is needed for a year or two until our young Ds develop. Maybe even a Gonchar. He could be obtained cheap, and DAL is willing to pick up half his contract.

We don't need to be trading for young Ds.

Brennan is a huge wild card. He clearly has offensive skills. Does he have enough defensive game. Never saw him play before, but would like to hear from somebody who has seen him. Or any kind of write up by an outside source.

Anybody have a link to anything on him?

Two years ago, many here would call him a Garth dumpster diving project.

rmbbanned
rmbbanned

@ MRC- a simple question isn't an argument. Who would you like to see the Isles starting six be on opening night. Have an idea an support it. That isn't an argument, it is a request for something more then " I wish they would give the young guys a chance."

Pokka has never played on NHL ice- so I don't see him as an option. He has the potential to be very very strong. Pulock is very good attacking, but weak defending. I don't see how he makes the team better defensively.

I do see Viz as crucial. The one season he played the bulk of the season, they made the playoffs. They were a much better team with him in there, then when he was gone. He is also by far the best option to run the power play. He also made Hickey better when they paired up. Last year, Hickey was very good. Not a little good, very good. Hopefully they are an even stronger pairing.

Hammer and CdH are the other top 4 defenders. Their results are clearly very strong.

For the rest, it is somebody to play with Reinhart. I think Reinhart will be better then expected offensively. The Oil Kings used him as to shutdown the oppositions top player every night. He always answered the bell.

Number six is whomever plays well with Reinhart. Hopefully Donovan fills that role.

There you have it, my six guys for opening night.

I also think your rating their defense way to low, because your using goals allowed. The Isles goaltending had the worst save percentage in the NHL. If not the worst, next to last. With Halek, that number climbs 15 places..

Feel free to comment, or offer your own starting 6 guys. It is a blog, offer an opinion. Take a crack at mine. Whatever..

@doc942 I've been watching hockey probably longer then you. Just what we need 2 5/10 fineese defenseman. I can't remember the last time Hickey or Visnovsky threw down the gloves when some opposing player took a run at an Islander player. I do like Hickey but he's just too small.
