Zagsblog: Copeland Shines in Game 5 Win as Amare’s Role Deteriorates

By JOSH NEWMAN
Special to ZAGSBLOG

NEW YORK – Amar’e Stoudemire made $19.95 million this season and is owed $45 million over the next two seasons. Chris Copeland is a 29-year old undrafted rookie free agent making roughly $473,000.

With the Knicks forcing a Game 6 Saturday night back in Indianapolis following an 85-75 Game 5 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday evening, one of these players seemingly has a spot in the rotation, while the other’s role appears to be in question. The thing is, which player matches which scenario doesn’t make much sense based on the salaries.

Whatever is different, the results will be the same. Bottom of the league, yet again. That might not be different, but it is remarkable.

My opinion of our GM is at an all time low (which is remarkable in its own way b/c it's never been high) and I believe that the closing chapter on the moronic, ill conceived and somehow-even-more -poorly-executed Vanek trade will be equally as disenchanting, setting the bar and rebuild timeline (soon to be measured in eons) and hopes of fans further back still.

Garth Snow is playing a form of Russian Roulette with Vanek.  It would seem prudent on his part to get a deal done as soon as possible in light of what he witnessed in Sochi with his top asset and center.  If that same calamity should befall Vanek while he still wears this uniform, all hell should break loose from the owners suite but,,, we all understand by now that he wears a teflon suit as far as Wang is concerned.  Still and all,,, the sooner he deals Vanek, the better...

@truth77

He may even get emotional by learning that Snow is still GM, and Cappy is larger then life behind the bench, directing his 'troops' into another losing war, their 'battle level' is low most games, as per their record.

@REDSpointofview There are several GM's in the same position as Garth and the Islanders are there not? The Rangers have two impending free agents which it doesn't sound like they are going to sign prior to March 5th either. The Islanders won't make the playoffs, but if the Callahan or Girardi were injured, that wouldn't be a good situation for the Rags either.

@REDSpointofview  It's an interesting point but I can't recall any players that were sat out in an instance like this; certainly doesn't mean it hasn't happened, or shouldn't happen - but I can't think of any.

@REDSpointofview Absolute insanity.  If the man is being moved, there is not reason to suit him up.  Just scratch him and roll 3 lines with a mix and match 4th.  What's the point?  No need to showcase.  In fact, scratching him may give the impression that a deal is pending and get some other GM off his arse to put out his best bid before the guy is traded away.

@REDSpointofview I absolutely agree.  But how often do you see a player scratched before being traded unless there is an actual trade being finalized?  I don't think they will scratch him, so until then we will hold our breath every time he gets hit.

@Lyle Odelein @REDSpointofview  ok, but the rangers are playing for points/playoffs, the islanders aren't.  so the rangers play their full roster.  islanders have a different choice they could make.

No,,, it wouldn't but,,, just imagine the explosion of posts hereabouts should Vanek go down in one of these four remaining games before the dead line knowing there were seven some odd suitors as per media reports...

@bubbamac19 @REDSpointofview

That is done in baseball all the time, and trades also include a contingency on a physical exam from the trading partners which can void the deal.  Of course, this situation is a bit different as there are four games until the trade dead line.  That's four opportunities for Snow's best trade dead line asset to become Snow's biggest blunder.  And I'm not even advocating for him to be scratched from the line up for all four games.  I'm just questioning why he's still here, why Snow hasn't already made a deal in light of all the media speculation that there are at least seven teams interested.  And while on topic,,, that same scenario applies to MacDonald, too...

Explosion of posts?  Seriously?  You act like Wang or Snow care about what the fans think.

@since72 I had a dream last night that Vanek and Amac collided in practice and they both got hurt.

@REDSpointofview @Lyle Odelein  Never mind the explosion of posts.  If he were to get injured, the Isles would get NOTHING for a free agent who carries much value and the team would be severely hurt.  Until he is traded, they should lock Vanek in a room with no sharp objects and and armed guard at the door!

@bubbamac19 @REDSpointofview

I understand why you are scared...  We are about to trust a GM who has basically proven nothing up to this point in his career to deliver the goods on this trade.  My fingers are crossed as well...

@REDSpointofview  Yes, baseball certainly is full of examples; Snow is inept, but I do think that letting the pressure (demand) build to a crescendo is ok; one can't control everything and if he doesn't feel he's heard the best offer, than so be it. But Red, I feel like this move will go a long, long way towards defining next season - and it scares me to death.
