Harris DeckerOn Wednesday, the Rangers will open up the Stanley Cup Finals in Los Angeles, taking on the Kings. That makes Tuesday the last day that the back pages of all of the New York newspapers could focus on the Knicks… if they made any news.
A coaching decision could be delayed through the end of the Stanley Cup Final, which is scheduled to run through June 18 if a Game 7 is necessary. Could that mean that the Knicks won’t have their new coach in place until late June?
What is interesting is that the last time the Rangers found themselves in the Stanley Cup Final, they were sharing the back page with the Knicks, who were in the NBA Finals taking on the Houston Rockets. Game 4 between the Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks was played on June 7, the day before the Knicks tipped off Game 1 of the Finals in Houston.
Something to note is where Phil Jackson is during the Stanley Cup Final. Jackson attended Game 6 of the Rangers series win over Montreal. Will he go to every game of the Stanley Cup Final, or just the games at the Garden? Will that affect his coaching search?
With a well-timed announcement, and possibly some Rangers victories, MSG could ensure that one way or another, the Garden stays on the back pages of New York as long as possible.
