Could Rangers run delay a Knicks announcement?

Harris Decker

On Wednesday, the Rangers will open up the Stanley Cup Finals in Los Angeles, taking on the Kings. That makes Tuesday the last day that the back pages of all of the New York newspapers could focus on the Knicks… if they made any news.

A coaching decision could be delayed through the end of the Stanley Cup Final, which is scheduled to run through June 18 if a Game 7 is necessary. Could that mean that the Knicks won’t have their new coach in place until late June?

What is interesting is that the last time the Rangers found themselves in the Stanley Cup Final, they were sharing the back page with the Knicks, who were in the NBA Finals taking on the Houston Rockets. Game 4 between the Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks was played on June 7, the day before the Knicks tipped off Game 1 of the Finals in Houston.

Something to note is where Phil Jackson is during the Stanley Cup Final. Jackson attended Game 6 of the Rangers series win over Montreal. Will he go to every game of the Stanley Cup Final, or just the games at the Garden? Will that affect his coaching search?

With a well-timed announcement, and possibly some Rangers victories, MSG could ensure that one way or another, the Garden stays on the back pages of New York as long as possible.

Come on Harris, how will going to the hockey games prevent him from doing his job?

This is such an terrible assumption.

Phil will make his announcement whenever he's ready and he damn pleases.

He certainly has been going to Ranger games, but Phil doesn't strike me as the "I care so much about a completely different that I won't do my job".

I know it's a slow news period, but these concerns seem totally silly.

We are NOT going to delay finding a coach just because Rangers are in the finals.  We may delay the announcement.

And Phil is not going to mess up his coaching search so he can attend Ranger games, get real.

The Rangers are in the Finals and we haven't signed Fisher and we still own the back pages. The Rangers have a real nice team their fast and fun to watch but Phil and the Knicks are worth over the  2 billion than the Clippers got so they own this town. It's funny the NBA final are going on too but the Knicks get the pub.Baseball still has the lead because of how long they been around but the Knicks are going to take it over here with Phil.

@BiggieTKB  I couldn't believe whatever channel was showing the Knicks game back then actually stopped showing the game to show the stupid OJ chase, even though every other channel was showing the same thing.  Me and my friends were screaming at the TV, we even called the station to complain.

I'm shocked to hear the fans at the actual game stopped watching the game, that's sick.  They should have had their Knicks privileges revoked.

@johneco @BiggieTKB it was near half time and then into the third quarter IIRC..

So during half time a lot of people are usually in the corridors but it was an amazing amount of people.  Seemed more in the corridors watching the chase than the game at start of the third.

It went split screen after a while.  I was in teh 400 section so it was pretty crazy
