Could this be Carmelo Anthony’s last month as a Knick?

Harris Decker

As long as you are reading this article immediately after it was posted, this very moment marks 30 days until the NBA’s trading deadline on February 20 at 3 p.m. This year’s trading deadline could set the tone for the way the Knicks rebuild over the next few years. With Carmelo Anthony approaching free agency, Steve Mills will have to decide if trading his superstar makes sense or if Anthony will stick around for the long haul.

Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Garnett, Brandon Bass

Rebuilding the Knicks is not going to be an easy task. They are missing a number of key pieces and are void of early draft picks until 2015. Given the lack of draft picks, the Knicks will have to rely on free agency and smart trades to rebuild. The question remains, is that rebuilding around Anthony or without him?

Trading Anthony would likely yield another superstar-caliber player in return, in addition to draft picks. While I don’t see Blake Griffin being the target, Anthony could bring back a mid-level superstar in addition to the aforementioned draft picks. It’s truly difficult to come up with a player to target, but rest assured if Anthony became available, plenty of teams would be lining up to acquire him. I’d imagine teams with strong point guards would be the first in line.

If Mills decides to hold onto Anthony, there are two scenarios that could play out. The first is that the two sides have had a discussion and Anthony stays, understanding that the Knicks won’t have much flexibility until 2015 when Amar’e Stoudemire’s mega-contract comes off the books. In that scenario, Mills could look to move other pieces in order to slowly build around Anthony, before making a huge push for a guy like Kevin Love or Rajon Rondo.

There is also the nightmare scenario for the Knicks in which Mills has confidence he can re-sign Anthony and then he walks in free agency. In that scenario, the Knicks will have a lot of money to work with in each of the next two off seasons, but will have lost Anthony without any compensation.

In any case, the Knicks are getting very close to having to make a decision about Anthony. If you’ve read this article at a normal pace, the trading deadline is now about 29 days, 23 hours and 56 minutes away. Strap in Knicks fans. We’re in for a fun month.

It should be the last month, you've won nothing with him and it's only getting worse. Plus there's no guarantee he signs back anyway. Chandler should be dealt as well. Bring in a real point guard please. Let's face fact Melo doesn't make anyone better shooting 3 of 22. And that happens to often the man isn't smart enough to realize he doesn't have it when his shot is off.

And god help us lose Felt on somewhere already.

100% DELUSIONAL....

What is a "mid level superstar". Honestly this could have been written by a 15 year old. No team is going to trade a superstar or a mid level superstar and picks, unless they are 100% sure they can resign Melo. Only one FO is dumb enough to make a trade like that, and we all know which one that is. Trading Melo may be necessary, but the idea that some big haul is coming back is a joke.

This team won 54 games last season and was in Eastern conference semi finals with basically the same team.  WHAT THE HECK HAS HAPPENED?

The coaching is just as horrible as the management. In fact they match one another perfectly. Melo n Bargs dont get enough screens, Felton never takes the pick, TC allows players to come inside, Stat plays no D nor does he box out, nobody hustles but Shump, Melo n Hardaway jr, theres too much to continue

Knicks schedule coming up!

Wednesday vs Sixers

Friday vs Bobcats

Sunday vs D'antoni

Tuesday vs Rondo

Thursday vs Cavs

After that our schedule becomes beyond brutal besides Bucks and Kings.

The Knicks are on top of KingDa Ka!!!! About to explode downward fast if these next few games they keep losing.  They are already at rock bottom. But this time the Knicks can get hit in the face with a Wrecking Ball on the way down from Kingda Ka.  Stay tuned!!!!!

This org is disgusting and for some reason Dolan really believes in his own ability to be the head of Bball operations. lol, this guy is delusional!

The 76's are going to cause us problems.  They have a nice rookie pg, with players such as Hawes, young, turner who can cause us problems on the boards, outside shooting, and penetration.  Hopefully we don't sleep on them. Who am I kidding.

How many players in the NBA are better than Melo? Few, less than ten.

How many of them are available? None.

Every trade scenario regarding Melo is a downgrade of talent. You could argue with the blow it up let's rebuild idea, but the Knicks without any superstars won't be able to attract free agents in 2015.

If they are serious about rebuilding...Melo has to go. What is served by keeping him...really what is the upside? Yes you have one of the top scorers in the year signed to a max deal...then what do you have? You're still in the same situation. Even in 2015 there are no assurances you will get anyone to sign here.

As much as I dislike Indiana they did it right, built through the draft (got lucky with some players who panned out). The knicks either don't value the draft or don't have the scouts to accurately assess talent. Hardaway is a player, Shump should be better than what he is and other than that what have we gotten out of the draft the last...oh 10-15 years? You will never win that way, no team wins that way without at least having SOMETHING they have built from the ground up.

When you have a good coach, players like Shump dont have flashes in their 3rd season. They are consistent!

The only thing that will make Melo not leave is if these Knicks are capable of pulling a 99-00 trick on the world of sports and even then our off season moves have to be 2K awesome for him to even consider. Smh

This is such a tough call. U know Melo is miserable right now and it's a tough sell to convince him to waste another prime year of his career with this bunch of bums. I'm not even sure as fan what I want to happen. This year's team has been tough watch, but so was Duhon/Al Harrington/David Lee team which is kinda what the team would look like if we traded Melo...yikes

Kvdaone

The Knicks play depressed and this org is the reason. Its obvious to Stevie Wonder that players like J.Kidd, Rasheed Wallace and Kurt Thomas were the true leaders last season. With that said, Woody is not the man and Felton is trash yet no moves are made. James Dolan is a joke! Thats why top players have avoided us through the yrs.

Guard play has fallen off the cliff from last year. Shump, JR, and Felton have all regressed.

4 of last years top six players (chandler, Felton, jr & Shump) have all sucked. We're still a jumpshooting team, we just don't make em anymore.

@supert

Offense 100   ppg to 94.9 ppg down 5.1

Defense 95.7 ppg to 99.1 ppg  up 3.4

So that's how you going from winning to losing.

@rgm891 We gotta Win 4 out of the next 5 in order to stay near bottom of playoff race

lol funny we was in a opposite position last season.

Your right in a sense, your wrong in a sense. Let's just say you trade Anthony to to Toronto ( Just an example ) for Derozan and Lowry along with a 1st rd pick. Your improving your team in 2 areas. Or how about Melo for Cousins and Ferdette. Cousins 23 ppg and 11 RPG. If you make the Cousins trade then you have to trade Shump and bunch for Lowry. Who btw 16 ppg and 7 apg.

Those two will attract free agents and since both Cousins and Love both play C/PF it would not prevent the team from going after Love when he becomes available.

It may be a downgrade in talent, but maybe we can upgrade our smarts.MELO is a self centered piece of flab, who has no idea what it takes. In two years he will start to wear down, especially the way he keeps his body.Any intelligent player won't sign here to play with this money grabber

Kvdaone
Kvdaone

@Xavier UzcáteguiLess than 3 to be honest but heres a scenario. If we trade for Blake Griffin and get Collison in that trade with a pick, that will put us in a good position to trade for an elite pg and dump players like JR maybe.

Kvdaone
Kvdaone

@grundyI say if they are truly serious as a team, everyone with ETOs must opt out with Melo. Bargs and Stat included. Theyre not worth the money shelled out.

not to mention every pg thats not handicapped is scorchin this fool

Bo Beck

Umm maybe this is all shumpert is ever think

of that. It's always the coach not the players their horrible basketball IQ and the god awful shots they take.

Bo Beck

Has Melo ever lead his team to a Championship? Has Melo ever gotten his team to one? It isn't Memo's fault his team is losing when he's shooting 3 of 22 from the floor?

Melo is a cancer and was beginning his best Dwight Howard impression earlier this season before someone smacked him upside the head. The best thing for the Knicks to do is trade him. Then trade Chandler and let Amere's contract run out.

Realize a big man and PG are essential to winning a championship. Cousins is on the Market, Love will be a free agent, Lowry can be had, Conley, as well as Lawson any one of those players is a massive improvement over what the Knicks have.

lindro88
lindro88

Dolan is sober. So we can't even blame drugs.

grundy
grundy

@Jerry Gee @grundy The Heat already had Wade though and built around him. The knicks gutted the roster to get Melo because they haven't drafted anyone of the caliber since...Ewing? And its not for lack of having the opportunity it's the lack of scouting and of course, the lack of keeping picks. Look at Miami, Indiana (this year), San Antonio, LA Lakers...all of them had a foundation of sorts through the draft...we have a whole lot of nothing. That is problem #1 and until that philosophy changes I don't see anything positive happening any time soon.

Kvdaone
Kvdaone

@Jerry Gee@KvdaoneDolan! If he can make a call to bench JR for his antics, why cant he call to bench Felton for horrible play?

Kvdaone
Kvdaone

@Jerry Gee@KvdaoneIt woulda been hard to keep Lin bcuz we had vets like J.Kidd coming in at close to minimum just to win. Plus he was the TO master
