Daily News: Dolan tried to stop Jackson from firing assistants, others

James Dolan tried to stop Phil Jackson from firing Mike Woodson’s assistant coaches, including Herb Williams (Isola, April 23).

The report said there was “minor friction” between the owner and the president.

“Among the coaches fired on Monday was long-time assistant Herb Williams, who is well-liked in the organization. Within one hour, there was a report that the organization would ‘encourage’ the next head coach to keep Williams. It was an odd story, which read like it was planted by someone other than Jackson, because why would Jackson fire Williams and then encourage the next coach to rehire him?” Isola wrote.

Jackson may also be looking to change medical staff, trainers and more, but Dolan may have stepped in on those decisions as well.

A separate report said that Steve Mills, Allan Houston and Mark Warkentien could be reassigned within the organization or fired (Beck, April 23).

Joffrey (Dolan) already plotting to kill The Hand of The King (Jackson).

SMH.

Dolan you habitual fool. Let the man do his job.

King of MSG, but you'll never be The King of New York.

Phil also took a jab at the spurs...saying..he talked to Melo about Tim Duncan how they built A Dynasty..then says well they aren't really a dynasty because they never won back to back championships...they have only been a force.  LOL...Phil with the Jab at the spurs...funny.

Wow...so Phil and Melo had a Tim Duncan pay cut "talk"...in which Phil Hopes Melo is true to his word...love it.

Out of left field but -- would it be at all possible to get Kobe and Pau? I know Kobe is iffy with his injury but...

Phil speaks like a leader... WOW!!! I like that he states that we are moving forward with Melo on or off the bus. Melodrama will end this year!!!

I have no idea what is true and what isn't true when it comes to the Knicks...but, since it was all but a formality that Woodson was getting fired and was probably discussed weeks ago by Jackson and Dolan, wouldn't the firing of all of Woodson's assistants also have been discussed at that time as well? In other words, this certainly could not of been a surprise to Jim Dolan and "IF" he had that much of a problem with it, he never would of hired Phil in the first place if in fact this was his intention. I just don't see there being any truth to this story...or maybe it was just blown out of proportion which would be par for the course when it comes to the NY sports media. It is certainly not unusual that when a coach gets fired that all his assistants get let go as well...especially when a new President of BB Operations as powerful as Jackson gets hired to run the entire show...

@BiggieTKB Is Melo staying Biggie?

YES or NO?  None of that 20% b.s. ok!

@MeloStat301 LOL  That gotta sting for Melo because he hasn't even gotten to NBA finals in 10 years. Melo would surely settle for a force instead of a farce!

Time to build a dynasty... it will not happen overnight but we are moving towards that now that we have a visionary in command!!

He def speaks like one....

@Tony Fonseca Have to move forward regardless LOL...its kind od an obvious statement, but I agree..thats how it should be..if he leaves..see ya...if he comes back, welcome, that's it.

Dynasty? Well, yeah it sounds nice, but since it's been 41 years since our last championship I'd take just one and be very happy...for now. I do think Phil will put something together for the long term though, which is exactly what we want...

@Tony Fonseca As a Fan, I truly get ya!  As a player like Melo, I would truly question that big time1

It doesn't matter he stays or leaves. Nonetheless, Knicks is his better option. Thib will break him down with his long practices. And in 2015 Knicks will be a better option with all the expiring contracts

@xmenreturn  Melo is staying.  Here's the thing.  Bulls are down 2-0 to the Wizards and look TIRED.  Thibs wears his teams out.  They over perform.  Sure, swap out Boozer for Melo and the team is better but a championship team?  And does Melo want to take the gamble that Derrick Rose will return to MVP form?  I mean, he's played what 10 games in the last 2 years?  And if Boozer is amnestied, Bulls will still need to cut a player or two to make room for Melo.  Or if they do a sign and trade with The Knicks, they'll have to give up draft picks/young players…so Bulls will be no better than The Knicks are now.  Capped out.  They'll have Melo and Noah and a good coach and the hope that Derrick Rose returns to form.  Doesn't really seem like a better option than Knicks being a middle of the road playoff team next year with the chance to really reload after next year, does it?

Melo goes out West.  Well, then he has to face all those tough Western Conference teams to get to the Finals.  My biggest worry is Pat the Rat in Miami doing something sneaky to pair up Melo with Lebron.  But I honestly think Knicks are his best option.

We have good pieces.  Chandler will be gone after next year.  So will Amare and Bargs…maybe Amare resigns for much less.  We can give him more money than anyone else AND the extra year of security.  Paul Pierce was older than Melo is now when Boston put their big 3 together.  The year before they were awful.  We got Phil in charge now.  Reinforcements are coming.  Melo just need sit tight and trust Phil.  Resign now, rest the shoulder through the off season and maybe even the first few weeks of the season next year.  We'll have a first round pick too next year.

@kingofny  lol

Dude,  if the Top FO guy was always planning to build around Melo, and Melo came in and stated he was willing to take a put cut, Wouldn't that at least be the time to let Melo know that he is FO Guy to build around without hesitation?

Phil sees that Melo and his peeps are in the news saying he will opt out and test a bunch of teams to see which ones are about winning and etc.

When does Phil let Melo know that he is without doubt HIS Guy knowing Melo has given in some and stated he would take a pay cut?

This seem to be about the PR dance where Melo is feeling Phil out and putting it out there they if he were to leave it will not be about the money!

I have dealt with these type of things but on a much less pay scale so I truly have some insight on how some of these things do go.

But we shall see once again!  I don't mind being wrong!  I went out on the LBJ thing when so many here tore me apart as being crazy!

Here we are again!

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@kingofny LOL  Phil and Melo has to speak at some pt dummy.  If Melo went to Phil, how does that make that Phil truly thinking Melo is his guy to build around?

Some of you really have no common sense! Really!

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@Blaze NYK Yes the Knicks can set Melo free that is the point.  If I'm Melo, I would know that too!  So why would he opt to go with us knowing that by signing he's is totally at the mercy of Phil where as Phil has not even been showing him the luv that he may need now!

There's a Fan view! There's Phil view and then there's Melo view maybe.

They all surely might not match! lol

Blaze NYK
Blaze NYK

@xmenreturn @knicksgirl35  I disagree.  Its as much on Phil if we don't win and he can get that extra year.  Plus if its not working out, Melo can be traded to a contender cause if he takes that discount his contract will be a nice one.  Plus there will most likely be a new CBA soon which means another round of amnesties most likely, so Knicks could always set Melo free if its not working out.

I think we have more options that you might think.

Blaze NYK
Blaze NYK

@xmenreturn  The argument is simple.  Hang tight and we'll have a real contender in 2015, more of a contender than any team you could go to.  Learn the Triangle and you'll be a better player.  Chicago won't be able to get any better after they get you and are down 2-0 to the wizards.  The West is much harder to get out of.  Knicks had a bad year this year bc of the coach and bad luck.  Look at what a difference one guy like Jason Kidd made between this year and last year.  We're gonna have a real offense and better defense, a better coach with me mentoring him and in 2015 we'll get real reinforcements.  Even next year we can be competitive bc of how weak the east is and how knows, at the trade deadline we might be able to flip Amare, Chandler and Bargnani for some real pieces.  A lack of a system and real coach is what did us in this year.

Blaze NYK
Blaze NYK

@xmenreturn  How can you say that?  Melo is younger than Paul Pierce was when Boston put their big 3 together.  If KG doesn't get hurt they likely win back to back and went to game 7 against The Lakers.  Not a dynasty but certainly Melo.  In 2015 Melo will be the same age Pierce was when they put their big 3 together.  Championship, second round 7 game exit against Orlando who went to the Finals with No KG, NBA Finals losing on the road to the Lakers in game 7 in the last minute of the game, ECF game 7 against the eventual champs.  KG, Pierce and Allen were all in their 30s during that run.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@OLDKNICK I'm on topic. Melo is the biggest topic or unfinished biz that remains.   We will get a coach and it will be one of Phil guys!   I'm not to concerned about that!

Yeah but did you get right where LBJ was going?

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@knicksgirl35 EXACTLY!   Add that plus Phil will support his own hand selected coach over Melo at 30+.

So if Melo stays here, he has very little room for error and as you stated, if we don't win, it's a lot on Melo.

Why would you stay under that type of pressure knowing you won't have any big help next year and that you most likely will have a rookie coach and Phil at a position he never excelled at before.  It's not like Phil is the coach!

As a fan, I have to believe in PHil getting in right at some pt hopefully.

If I was in Melo shoes, I could care less what Phil did as a coach because he's now the FO person that can't do much for me next year period.  I would doubt sincerely that Phil is banking on me at 31+ to do something I never did before.

I WOULD BE GONE and KNICK FANS could call me all kinds of names!  lol

That's the honest truth!  As Knicks Fan, I would blast me for leaving too! lol

knicksgirl35
knicksgirl35

@xmenreturn  If pressure is the issue with Mel than he may leave because if he stays and doesn't win for PHIL than he will really be maligned by everybody.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@OLDKNICK Dude, how can you begin to see things if you don't try to put yourself in that position?

It's the reason so many of you missed out on why LBJ was going to Miami!

Crazy fans really thought LBJ would come here after failing to win a ring in Clev.

LBJ had so much pressure on him to be the best ever and yet he he didn't even have 1 ring yet!

If that was you, why would you come here?

It surely helped to have played pro sports and deal with the mental pressure of competing to be the best.  I surely wasn't the best but I did see some of the pitfalls and issues players have to deal with.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@OLDKNICK @xmenreturnLOL So if you were Melo, how would that apply to you?

If I'm Melo and I'm 30 with options, I want to know how will Phil in his new position he never had, make me a winner if I were to stay?

Anything else is immaterial because I have options!

Some of ya never try to think if you were truly in that position.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@MeloStat301 I get Phils point but for Melo, he would surely love to be a force with a ring or two at this pt.

At this stage, Melo will not be part of a dynasty so that's just whistling in the wind for as Melo is concerned.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@MeloStat301 So Melo approach Phil and not Phil approached melo saying he is HIS guy?  hahahahahaha

Melo is still opting out playa!  Once the Bulls and others make him feel like he's the best thing since sex,  Melo will be gone!

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@knicksgirl35 Not at all!  Melo would be smart to leave and if that was me, I would surely be gone unless Phil had come to me and told me emphatically that he had a plan to get me help and that I was his man to build around.

Some here think I hate Melo. It's truly not the case.  I just don't see him being the guy for Phil to build around.

If that was me, no way would I pass up a chance to play for a team like the Bulls next year where my skills would match more favorably and I wouldn't have to change my game that drastically.

Some of you are sleeping on this!  Top Ballers have huge egos and they want to be courted and loved.

MeloStat301

@xmenreturn @MeloStat301 Phil said as much today at the press conference.  Melo approached him on the pay cut, and Phil brought up Duncan.  Do u need it video taped??  LOL... ur funny.

@xmenreturn @knicksgirl35  He's stupid if he leaves Philly J.

@knicksgirl35 GONE!  GONE! GONE!

I'm more convinced of that than i was before!

Phil is trying to do his thing and change the culture and etc which is great!

Melo will do his thing and change teams so he can contend next year!

@xmenreturn @knicksgirl35 @MeloStat301  I honestly think he's staying.

Melo is Melo and his peeps out saying he will still opt out and look  at maybe 5 teams and want the Howard treatment?

I agree fat_eddie. I will be content with Pat Riley years and chip is ice on the cake. But I think PJ is far better winner than Riley. Therefore, I expect more success from PJ. It will be priceless the battle between Pat and Phil... and the winner is......
