On Wednesday night, Iman Shumpert leaked what could be a potential third jersey for the Knicks on his Instagram account. The picture of an orange uniform with blue lettering was taken at Shumpert’s Adidas photoshoot in Los Angeles. Shumpert, who turned 23 on Wednesday, deleted the picture soon after posting it.
New York redesigned its traditional home white and road blue jerseys before last season, but did not include a third jersey in its repertoire. They did, however, wear monochromatic orange uniforms for their 2012 Christmas Day game against the Los Angleles Lakers, but that was a one-time deal associated with the NBA’s “BIG Color” campaign in partnership with Adidas.
With Brooklyn Nets gear currently dominating the New York merchandising market, it would not come as a surprise if the Knicks decided to change things up in an effort to generate more revenue and sales competition. Also, with Carmelo Anthony leading the NBA in jersey sales last season, it is understandable that the league and its official apparel partner would want to put another Knicks jersey onto store shelves.
On Thursday morning, a Knicks spokesman neither denied nor confirmed whether or not the jersey featured on Shumpert’s Instagram would be present in the team’s future.
