Final: Mavericks 110, Knicks 108

The New York Knicks fell to the Dallas Mavericks, 110-108, at Madison Square Garden Monday night.

The Least You Should Know

The Knicks lost the season series to the Mavericks for the 14th consecutive year. (Last series win came in 1999-2000 season).

Carmelo Anthony eclipsed the 40-point mark for the fifth team this season and the third time in the past five games. He’s averaging 41.3 points per game in the past four games, but the Knicks are just 1-3 during that stretch.

Aside from Anthony, three Knicks scored in double figures (Tyson Chandler, Tim Hardaway Jr. and J.R. Smith). Only Chandler had a double-digit rebounding total.

The loss drops the Knicks to 21-36, six games back of the Charlotte Bobcats and the Atlanta Hawks for the No. 7 and 8 seeds in the Eastern Conference.

Sam Spiegelman

Dirk Nowitzki didn’t have as eye-popping a stat line as Carmelo Anthony did, but he proved he still has ice in his veins.

After Anthony drained a 3-pointer to tie it up at 108 with 50 ticks remaining, Nowitzki made a 19-foot jump shot to beat the buzzer and lift the Dallas Mavericks (35-23) to a 110-108 victory at Madison Square Garden Monday night, the team’s third win in a row

Anthony eclipsed the 40-point mark a third time in the past five games, and his late 3 to tie up was one of his most clutch moments on the year. But Nowitzki’s timing was just a little better.

Anthony scored a game-high 44 points and hauled in nine rebounds, and is averaging 41.3 points per game over the past four. The Knicks, though, are 1-3 during that span.

Tyson Chandler had a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds), while Tim Hardaway Jr. and J.R. Smith combined for 25 points on 11-of-26 shooting and 3-of-14 from beyond the arc. Smith and Raymond Felton shared the team lead with seven assists.

The loss dropped the Knicks (21-35) to six games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and to 12-18 on their home floor. The road ahead doesn’t look all too bright either. The next three games are against playoff teams, beginning with the Miami Heat and then onto the Golden State Warriors and Chicago Bulls.

A familiar foe in Vince Carter led the Mavericks with a team-high 23 points, while Monta Ellis had 22 and Jose Calderon added 20. Nowitzki finished with 15 points on the night.

The win keeps Dallas in the No. 7 slot in the West, a 1/2 game behind the Golden State Warriors and a 1/2 game ahead of the Phoenix Suns.

The Knicks travel to South Beach to face the defending champion Miami Heat on Thursday at 8 p.m.

Goodbye Melo. Unless they fire Woodson, this will continue. There is no pint in waiting unless you want to ensure that Melo is either hurt or gone or both. The switching and rotations are killlng our team.

Woodson interview template:

Coach, why was it so hard to get into the flow tonight?

"We had a lot of open looks from an offensive standpoint, but the shots just didn't fall. I thought [Raymond, JR] and [stat] were open at times but they just wouldn't drop, man."

What did you see from [Vince Carter] tonight?

"He's a great player, and he hurt us tonight from an all-around standpoint. He's a talented guy who's in the mix for MVP of this league and we just couldn't stay in front of him."

Coach, what about the lack of defensive effort?

"I wasn't happy with our defense today. I have to get these guys focused on making stops from a defensive standpoint. That's on me. We can't [play catchup all night] and expect to win."

Why is this team struggling right now?

"Well I can't take anything away from [the Mavs] they're one of the most talented teams in this league. They were just better than us tonight."

Are the playoffs still achievable?

"It's my job to get us in the playoffs, and I'm going to work my butt off to get this team over the hump. We're still only [6] games out and it's still early."

Ray Felton arrested on weapons charges. If proven, this will be the first defense we've seen from him all year

Carmelo Anthony. Then only NBA "superstar" who can give you 40+pts. in a loss. Gee, can we still blame his teammates? Seems like they had decent games too.

For a moment I had the happy thought that, hey, maybe we can void Felton's contract now that he's been arrested for a felony, using the Morals clause.

But then I remembered that Washington was not able to void Arenas' contract in a similar situation (anyone out there understand why not???  I mean what does it take to trigger the morals clause, how can doing jail time for a felony not be enough?)

Game over people.

And I don't just mean this game, I mean all hope for the playoffs, and basically for the next 3 years because Melo is sure to leave, and we've missed the window for getting a decent return for him.

I think Melo wants to stay, but because we've degenerated into a joke, there's really no way he can.  Felton was just arrested, and JR is continuing to make a fool of himself.  And we have them past 2015 - i.e. they (and Dolan, and Mills and all that total crap) are part of any pitch we make to FAs and Melo for 2015.  I'm a knick fanatic, and I myself would walk...

Ray Felton is currently being questioned for allegedly pointing a gun at a woman early Tuesday morning.

I know we don't like the guy, but obviously he is having some issues off the court affecting his play. I say we shut him down for the season or until he clears his mind.

Tonights loss as well as others have shown the Knicks dont truly have a problem scoring, its how they score and defense that matters. Ppl continue to say Melo doesnt have role players or Melo needs such and such. My take is this: He only needs a pg! Im not fond with the way the team is as a team and as developing individual players but when you know what you have you work with it or force them to get better.

Earlier when I mentioned KD ppl got there panties in a bunch and immediately threw Ibakas name out as to why they are winning without WB. Lets look at facts......Ibaka was just a rebounder and shot blocker when he started. Now he is  very good at PnR and he can shoot 3s along with a decent post game....How did that happen? All the players on OKC saw how committed KD was to winning: In the gym, working on his handle, working on knowing the offense to BECOME a set up artist, working on his all around game.........If Melo showed the same leadership, the knicks wouldnt have a defeated mind set. NO, it is not one mans fault for a bad season but when your players have 4yrs in and they get worse instead of better together we have to look at the core of the team and the heart of the core is......

I honestly don't think Woodson would mind being fired at this point.

What exactly is going to happen if we get eliminated from the playoff race with weeks left in the season?

You think it's bad now. You ain't nothing yet.

I've been saying all year..If you can name a worst "coach" in the NBA right now (Dantoni excluded), good for you lol.  This is one of the worst "coaching" jobs I've ever seen (Dantoni included).  I've never seen a team that has no freaking idea what they are doing on key possessions.  No idea what to do on defending the simplest play in Bball, the P and R.

I've seen people on here blame Bargs for our bad defense.  That's not the case.  The "coaching' is the worst I've ever seen.  Nobody has any idea what they're doing out there.  Anyone who watches the games should be able to see that.

The rotations are beyond laughable.  This "coach" knows only one thing: Play Fatty Ray, JR, and Tyson.  And he proved that in the playoffs last year (and Kidd when he was here) when Frank Vogel of all people called him out for being a total and complete idiot.

This is a terrible, terrible "coach".  I firmly believe this is a .500 team under a competent coach.  Not just competent, but remotely competent.  Unfortunately, this clown is not remotely competent.  He is the worst in the NBA.

Sad that Guitar Jimmy can't even realize this.

I think he's been waiting for the axe since December. He wants to be fired and collect, not quit like Dantoni

@brookdon  If he didn't mind, he'd quit.

His stock has dropped so much that at the point I can't see a FO actually offering him a gig any time soon.

@brookdon Not one bit man.  Give me my money and take the stress away.  Go enjoy golf and spending time with your family. Brook u believe the Knicks will make roster moves this offseason with/without melo?

VerySilentJay

@Knicks_Fanatic  If I was the coach, I'd play only those who play with some fire.

Chandler, Felton, Amare....they'd barely play. I'd play them 10 minutes max.

I'd give minutes to Tyler so he can get used to the NBA pace, I'd give Timmy the proper time so he can understand the nuisances of D (he's just an awful defender). I'd give Murry more playing time alongside Prigs so he can see what a savvy playmaker can teach him.

Of course, no player can develop or learn the game properly under Woodson, so why bother.

@Knicks_Fanatic  We'll all have a lot more free time week nights?

Seriously, long term, that's probably the best result.  No way to hide from the failure that is this season in that case.  If the team somehow sneaks into the 8th spot, or even makes a run at the playoffs, someone at MSG will try to spin some BS about how they gave it a good fight and just came up a little bit short.

"The shots just didn't fall" or some nonsense.

They probably shut players down? That would be something.

@OLDKNICK  Damn.

He's not wrong though.

What else can Melo really do? He's not MJ, or Magic (and let's remember the teammates those two had).

He's easily the hardest working Knick. If he wasn't around, we wouldn't have more than 10 W's.

I feel for Melo. His hustle deserves rewards he won't find in NY.

Woodson and his moronic ways are literally scaring Melo away from the city. Can anyone blame him?

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@ds2488  When a "coach" hasn't established a solid lineup, when he doesn't know know what rotations to use according to a game's circumstances, when he doesn't know how to adjust from one half to the other, when he doesn't alter lineups that don't work, when he doesn't sit players who are hurting the team, when can't manage late game situation, and when he constantly gets outcoached....well, you got poop for a coach.

It should be crystal clear to everyone here that last year the vets (Kidd, KT, Camby, Sheed) were the true influencers and leaders of the team, the voices that were truly heard.

Normally, when players give up on a coach is when said individual is fired. And normally, when you got a good roster on paper, pride and passion kick in to make a season respectable.

This team has been destroyed even at a spiritual level, to such a point that they don't have it in them to fight properly.

Today was likely the worst defensive game I've seen since Pringles was our coach. To anyone who appreciates defense and its fundamentals, they should find it disturbing and insulting.

@Knicks_Fanatic @miracle33dHe may not be super athletic, but he'll put his body on people and try and stop guys going to the basket.  That's more than can be said about the "turnstile city" to which the rest of the team seems to revert far too often.

@Jesse Brand  You have no idea, he coached U Mass with Camby to a national ranking, took the Nets job, screamed at the players and got canned. He still screams at his players at U K, and is getting old with that routine there. Last couple years not getting all the players
