Final Score: Knicks 102, 76ers 92

The Knicks defeated the 76ers tonight by a score of 102 to 92.

The Least You Should Know

Amare Stoudemire played like vintage Stat tonight, totaling 21 points to along with 5 rebounds. His scoring resembled his past All Star caliber style that included post moves and several monster slams, including an electrifying put back dunk.

J.R. Smith returned to action tonight in the 2nd quarter, and enabled the offense with assists and scoring. His decision making in regards to shooting and passing was on point.

Carmelo Anthony did a bit of everything tonight, tallying 18 points, 9 rebounds and a season high 7 assists.

Iman Shumpert led the way on defense with 4 steals to go along with 7 rebounds and 7 points.

The Knicks were previously 1-4 in their own division this season, and have now won 4 out of the last 5 games.

Harris Decker

The Knicks won this game early, going up big in the 2nd quarter and expanding the lead in the 3rd. The 76ers looked completely outclassed by the Knicks who ran a balanced offense all night.

Amare Stoudemire really stole the show. He scored 21 points in 22 minutes, going 8 for 10 from the floor. His dominant play in the post was back and just like in the game against the Heat, he was unstoppable when catching the ball near the rim. He added 5 rebounds and was the Knicks leading scorer.

Another key in this game was J.R. Smith’s return. After sitting out against the Heat, he came in as the 3rd shooting guard, not playing until deep in the first half. He backed up Iman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr. but played great. He had an efficient 14 points, going 5 for 8 and adding 6 assists. It was nice to have him back and he played a very team oriented game.

Overall, this was another great win for the Knicks. They aren’t winning because Carmelo Anthony is scoring 40 points. They are running a balanced attack, playing great defense and passing the ball more than at any point this season. Raymond Felton’s return is a huge part of this but other guys are getting in on the passing action. Anthony (7 ast), Smith (6 ast) and Andrea Bargnani (3 ast) all added nice passes throughout the game.

The Knicks look to continue their winning ways on Monday when they take on the Phoenix Suns at 7:30pm

Interesting to see what moves Knicks make at the deadline. Wonder if Lowry price is higher it lower then.

Glad to see we're finally playing better, but we should have been playing like this all season. We're still out of the playoff picture, merely as good as the Nyets, and five games back of Toronto, who recently swept us and is still playing better than us. I am not giving this team credit just because they completely destroyed our high expectations at the beginning of the year. If Melo is healthy, this team is a failure if we don't get to the ECF.

Eric Bledsoe who usually kills us is out indefinitely.. so our chances of winning went up against Phoenix.

Knicks continue this play we'll be right back where we belong.

i really like the evolution of Melo. and the resurgence of Stat

now all we need is the emancipation of JR and the Return of Chandler and Priggy and we can go to war.

I'm interested to know what the rotation will be like when Chandler, Artest, Prigioni, and Beno get back. I think Murry has to continue to play.

I miss the days when this blog was mainly about basketball analysis. It's getting harder and harder to read this blog when the threads aren't that good (though I'm thankful for the forum) but now it feels like every other comment is written by a 13 year old with the name calling and calling people out...how many times do the same people need to be called out? It's getting uglier by the thread. Let's talk about basketball.

And some here thought the Chris Smith signing didn't affect the team...

To make a serious run we need an upgrade at pg and coaching.Nothing has changed.

It took JR 50K and for Woodson to bench him for him the to get focused? I don't believe in JR. He needs to go. Also, why did it take this long for Woodson to bench JR? Another example how clueless Woodson is. I love that we're winning but this team loves to get your hopes up to disappoint you again so i have to see more games to see if they're back. Sit Felton as well. Let another pg take his mins Hopefully he would stop turning the ball over, run plays for other ppl except Melo, and stop shooting bricks.

Yes the knicks are playing great and yes Felton's return is making them click but there is still no doubt that the knicks need an upgrade at the pg spot. We see how much a pg can make this team hum! We need an upgrade at pg asap

I haven't been posting much due to my schedule and bad basketball but lately these guys been playing well and i hated woody's coaching and rotation at the start but i must admit he is doing better lately also. Just like everyone that buried the knicks early, guys that are saying knicks are going to win the atlantic needs to temper their enthusiasm. They can revert to their bad ways again so dont go bragging yet.

I started the season thinking knicks will win it all or should i say contend and we need to resign Melo then a month later i was saying the knicks are dead and should think about trading melo. Now i dont know what to do yet; signing Melo to a 6 yr 130 mil contract starting at age 31(?) isn't the smartest decision IMO. Will Melo at age 34 be worth 20+ mil? Will Melo at age 34 be putting up 18+ ppg? or even demand a double team? IMO i look to resign Melo at less than Max say 3 yrs 100 mil. Knicks gotta sell him on winning a ring requires him to take a bit less money to spend on other stars to play with him; since he states he is all about what Lebron has. If thats the case take a pay cut like Lebron did.

Happy the team is playing well, glad woody decided to play JR last night and should continue to play him unless he starts with his dumb antics again. Amare looks good but i won't fall for his act again like i have the past 2 years, dont get me wrong i LOVE STAT and was on board for brining him in and i am rooting fr him to do well and stay healthy

Man, if STAT can play like this the rest of the season and JR can be focused like this and not worry about scoring, but instead focus on driving into the paint and getting open looks for his teammates, we're gonna be a scary good team.  We're still without Chandler, Pablo and MWP.  It will be interesting to see what happens when they get back.  I mean, Kmart has stepped up big.  Get Chandler back and now we're back to the "STAT or Kmart" conundrum but this type it will be a much harder choice cause both of them are playing well.

Pablo will be a nice return.  He's played well for us and helps with the ball movement.  I think he's a smarter if less explosive Beno.  And then MWP…not even really sure what his role is going to be on this team.

The biggest issue is going to be Woodson.  Not even his substitutions.  But more his controlling this team and making it clear to everyone that you play if you are playing well.  We need to make sure the egos don't get in the way of this team.  Bc with everyone healthy we have a very deep and diverse squad but sometimes that can back fire.  But I think it will be ok.  If Bargnani isn't playing well, you play STAT or Kmart more.  If Chandler isn't playing well, more STAT or Kmart or Bargs.  If JR isn't playing well, more Hardaway and Murry.  If Ray isn't playing well, more Pablo or Beno.  But guys gotta buy in.  Its actually easier now with more injuries but when everyone is back, we have reallyhave 13 players who can play every night, pretty much everyone but Cole and Tyler.

And even if everyone buys in during the regular season, will Woodson be creative enough and bold enough to call someone's number to make an adjustment in a playoff series.  And not just starting Kmart to go big against Indiana.  Will he have the courage to go super small ball to throw the other team off or sit JR for an entire second half in favor of a rookie if that rookie has the hot hand and JR is not playing well?

There is still a lot of work to be done for this team to get to where they want to go. I'm glad they've righted the ship somewhat but still don't feel like they are a top notch contender. An upgrade at pg & pf would help me feel a lot better about them.

With the Raptors in the thick of the division, would they really want to trade him? Unless they (smartly) decide to tank.

@DolanitisDr Irony is he did the right thing in Woody's D scheme. You keep them out of the paint and force them baseline - don't foul to keep with a guy twice your speed - and rely on your center and help to fill in - which stat did and Melo was ready for.

Actually, the problems on this play were 2-fold.

1) Felton needs to be aware of the court - no reason to be up on a guy 100 feet from the basket.

2) Shump's rotation was wrong - he needed to cheat back OUT to account for the two perimeter players (we only see 1 of them) since Melo is going to move in to take Stat's guy.

And frankly, all of this is only possible because refs allow so many moving screens. That one was fairly egregious.

Amen. I miss the advance scouting reports about opponents and the sets they run. You couldn't find that anywhere but here. Especially good for West opponents that you don't see as often in New York

@SheSaidSpikeWho i think they go back to the 2 pg set with prigs starting next to felton.  the big question if they do this is whether to go small or big with shumpert or bargs as the last starter.  i like going small but that means amare, bargs and kmart all fighting for minutes off the bench.  going big, though, means you have shump, jr and hardaway fighting for minutes.

no matter how you slice it, somebody who is currently playing well in rotation is going to ride pine.  that is, if you are a prigioni fan and want him to lock down 20-25 minutes as he did before.

personally prigs is my guy.  i say start him and let the other guys fight to earn minutes.  prigioni has already earned them in my mind.

Artest and Beno will be benched, Chandler and Prigs will get their regular PT back.

@SheSaidSpikeWho I take Murry over Beno, and I'd start giving STAT and Martin major rest, including nights off, etc.

@tifoso6 no one out there worth the value. Andre Miller sucks and is 100 years old. Big minutes and he's probably hurt like Beno and Pablo. Lowry went from underrated to overrated very quickly - he's a GREAT fantasy PG, but on a team with guys who are better with the ball in their hands, he's not great. He's still better than anyone we have, but he's not worth Shump/THjr + 1st round pick.

When Felton is healthy and moving well, he's enough for this team with this style. He's not very good, but neither are Mario Chalmers or George Hill or DJ Augustin. All of his tier of PG has major problems. Felton isn't as bad as he has been, and isn't as good as he was with Mike D'Antoni, the pg-maker, was coach.

I agree - a top 15 NBA PG would be a huge + for this team. A top 5, and this is a championship contender even with all its flaws. But no one of that ilk is available, and definitely not for what the Knicks can pay.

@lobcity Actually I dont think this team loves to get your hopes up and then disappoint. That was true for the D'Antoni Knicks. But these guys are either pretty good or pretty bad, lol. So I have hope that we will be pretty good now for the rest of the season.

@lobcity You have a conundrum in your post. We shoot bricks, and you want to st up the bricklayers in deference to the shooter? If the shooters are in fact shooting and you go to Melo early instead of late the doub comes early and he gets assists and we get open looks. What is wrong with that logic. Pleeze be smart enough to differentiate early and late in the clock. 15 sec time to draw and dish, 7 or less, not really enough time for the 2 pass sequence that usually gives you the best shot

@OLD_KNICK

"It's the worst feeling in the world," Smith said of getting benched.

Not believing that one, but it was good to see JR play under control, both physically and mentally last night.

bb_dot
bb_dot

@JayfromtheFix totally agreed. If Felton could be consistently playing to his abilities, driving, dishing, and knocking down the occasional 3 we would be fine. Like so many others on this team he is just way too inconsistent and unreliable. You need that kind of effort from your PG to succeed period.

brookdon
brookdon

I see Melo having a Pierce/Dirk like trajectory.

You also have to figure that losing Melo guarantees 6+ years of losing do to lack of picks. Personally I can't see Dolan jumping straight into a rebuild with no light at the end of the tunnel, with the Heat admitting they are banged up, and letting the best Knicks since Ewing not retire a Knick

@Blaze NYK.............there is a saying ........." Never change a team thats winning" ...and that holds true to the knicks ........hope prigs doesnt take murrays minutes .

CiceAsNice
CiceAsNice

@Blaze NYK Wow, I agree 100%, the only thing I will add is that Toure has to get minutes.  Give him 8-12 minutes, to keep Felton fresh.  Unfortunately Beno is out of the rotation imo, Woodson can't play em all!

BigChiefTriangle
BigChiefTriangle

@saintknick @DolanitisDr

Amar'e did the right thing in rotating ever.  But it is one thing to force them away from the paint and towards the sideline; it's another to offer ZERO resistance in containing the drive.  There was no soft hedge and recover.  Bargs might as well have been invisible, as Wroten doesn't even have to adjust his path coming off the screen.

The thinking may have been correct, but Bargnani's execution/effort was poor.

SheSaidSpikeWho
SheSaidSpikeWho

@bigdishing @SheSaidSpikeWho I agree. Beno can shoot better than Murry but at this moment, I value Murry's defense and energy more. He pushes the ball up the court which is a nice change of pace.

Also, Amar'e said he probably won't play in the game against LAC.

BigChiefTriangle
BigChiefTriangle

@saintknick @tifoso6

But what does "enough for this team" really mean? Chalmer and Hill are not great either, but A) the players surrounding them are better, and B) they are at least consistent on both ends. Talent helps, but it is exceedingly difficult to coach when you never know going into a game what you are going to get from Ray

Chris
Chris

@BiggieSmalls @lobcity Biigie I agree with you. This all falls on Woody to read what is happening on the court instead of crossing his arms and watching the as you say slippery slide. In the second half, I feel there should be maybe 4 hard minutes followed by bench for 2 or 3. To keep guys fresher, and also not to go cold by too much bench

@JayfromtheFix @Cice Boogie All I have to say is 2009 Playoffs Chicago against the Celtics. You can't be a bigger X-factor than that. Gordon was brilliant, JR never had games like that. But yes, that was four years ago. Gordon is far from that player right now.

@BiggieSmalls I hope beating the Heat in a regular season game will not be the highpoint of the season. Congrats to you and akamarb for staying firm on your belief in the Knicks. I must admit mine waned but I never took the extreme blow it all up mind set of our fellow posters. Some on this blog are at extremes. Others stay steady and choose the middle path. Patience. Wait we shall see. That applies in both good and bad times.

@illmatix

If the Knicks want to have any chance of giving Miami/Indy some resistance, the team NEEDS Shump's perimeter defense on George/Wade.  They will still get buckets, but will have to work harder.  Outside of that boneheaded foul, Shump really limited George's production while he was guarding him.
