Final Score: Nets 103, Knicks 80

The Knicks fell to the Brooklyn Nets this afternoon by a score of 103 to 80.

The Knicks were flat from the very start of this game, getting outscored 27-16 in the first quarter. While they kept it close in each of the next 3 quarters, that first period was just too much to handle.

Pablo Prigioni returned as the Knicks went small in the starting lineup. The Knicks went with Felton, Prigioni, Shumpert, Anthony and Chandler to open the game. That group scored only 20 points, outside of Anthony’s 26.

Over and over, the Knicks got burned on their switch defense, leaving Brooklyn shooters open all over the court. Joe Johnson led the Nets in scoring with 25, hitting 4 of his 8 shots from behind the arc.

Raymond Felton was awful this afternoon, shooting 2 for 11 from the field, recording 6 assists and turning the ball over 3 times. His poor play was equaled by Iman Shumpert who shot 2 for 8 and scored only 5 points in 20+ minutes.

Where do you even begin with a game like this. The Knicks were beat from the very start as they came out sluggish. What the Nets did to the Knicks this afternoon is crush them. The Knicks lost every single part of this game. It has to start with the defense.

From the start, the Nets hit a ton of outside shots as the Knicks did their usual switching on defense, instead of fighting through and over screens. Instead, they watched Joe Johnson score 20 points in the first half, sealing the win early for Brooklyn.

The point guard play was once again atrocious for the Knicks who had just 13 assists all game! The Nets had 25. Raymond Felton, Pablo Prigioni, Beno Udrih and Toure Murry all saw minutes at the point and all were mediocre at their best. After Felton’s 6 assists, the next highest total in that category was 2 (Anthony and Prigioni). That is unacceptable.

It was more than just the defense and point guard play. Iman Shumpert scored only 5 points and at time Andrea Bargnai looked like he was sleeping after coming off the bench for only the 2nd time this season. He finished the game 5 points and 2 rebounds. 2 rebounds from a guy who is 7 feet tall?! You must be joking.

The Nets had it all working today. Andre Blatche was draining shots from all over the court, Deron Williams returned with a vengeance and Joe Johnson lit up the Knicks. This is the type of game that gets coaches fired. Losing at home to a crosstown rival in embarrassing fashion is a tough pill to swallow and everyone in Knicks land is searching for answers. At this point, we might be ready to see a very new looking team in 2014-15.

The Knicks play again on Wednesday, taking on the 76ers at 7:30pm

The problem with the Knicks begins with Woodson. He is trying to force a defensive system on players that do not have the ability to play switch defense. A good coach adjust to the skill set of his players; Mike Woodson is stubborn. Secondly, Felton continues to get  beat off the dribble and offensively, does not start plays until it is10 seconds remaining on the clock. Add that he continue to only play pick and roll with Carmelo and Andrea. He seldom looks Shumpert way. JR is shooting about 34% and consistently misses defensive assignments. Plus Andrea does not have a clue how to play help defense. Its simple, fire Woodson, bench Felton and play Murray and Hardaway more. Sent from gusonroundball

It's astounding how lifeless they looked today. The team has tuned Woodson out. Now Chandler is killing the team's defensive strategy (in terms of the incessant switching), a couple of games after Carmelo called Woodson out for not making necessary in game adjustments

Chandler went so far as to say that the Knicks were "outschemed" today.

Dolan himself has been quoted as saying that when a coach loses the locker room, it's time for a change. This team has quit on Woodson. It needs a new voice. Will it make a difference in terms of winning anything of consequence? No, because the team isn't good enough talent wise to do anything special. But there's no excuse for these continual non competitive efforts; and not even being among the top 8 playoff seeds in a lousy conference, halfway into the season. Something has to give here.

#Knicks point guard Beno Udrih has requested a trade, ESPN New York has learned. Story coming soon.

This has to be the WORST PICK AND ROLL DEFENSE IN THE HISTORY OF BASKETBALL!  Bargnani guards NEITHER of the 2 players involved!  Instead he pushes his man towards the ball-handler and goes and covers a THIRD player not involved in the play at all!  This leaves Chandler and Prigioni confused and scattered (because Bargnani tries to cover Chandler's man); Deron Williams standing dribbling by himself at the 3pt line; and Melo shaking his head after Williams calmly drains the easiest 3-pointer of his career despite his shock at being left so wide open.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Melo demand a trade/big change. That replay of him is telling. He is PISSED

Took my boy to the game today (Sky Bridge front row seats: wow...but the seats are tight to the glass and it is kinda dizzying). What another terrible daytime effort. It was fun to watch from a high vantage point so I could point out to my son:

1. How little Bargnani moves in the offense

2. There are little to no screens ever set for anyone

3. The Chandler/Bargs "picks" at the top of the key are the most useless basketball moves I have ever seen

4. If there is any offensive plays called other than "swing it around the perimeter and look for some one open" or "iso Melo" my eye didn't catch it

5. Woody is responsible for this mess. He got a more "talented" squad than last year and he is trying to fit them into his system rather than exploiting what they can offer.

6. Ray needs to keep driving past the donut shops. His inability to defend his man on the perimeter breaks what ever defense the Knicks have.

Think this year is toast, Get Griffin and start the circus over next season.

its tough, the damn switching goes on. Play man or zone but not the switching. Felton is the blame he throws in the other teammate to defend his guys after a PnR. This is ugly.

Try this senerio, Dolan has lied to Melo. Melo cannot be traded, no team will trade for  him unless he says I sign an extension with you. He efs over Doldrum by not committing to any team as he did with the Nugs and Dolan can not trade him. Then he leaves for the Nyets who clear space for him and gives the big digit to Dolan for being such a jerk

Melo is probably on ESPN trade machine as we speak trying to figure out where he can go and they still have pieces after he gets there lol.

Blaze NYK
Blaze NYK

That's it.  Tear it down!  EVERYONE MUST GO.

That includes Melo, by the way.  Its not that I want to give up Melo, who I believe is a top 10 player.  But there is no way he signs an extension taking less than the Max.  Why would he trust The Knicks to do the right thing?  Getting another superstar is a pipe dream.  The only reason the big 3 works in Miami is because they all took less and Lebron is the best player on the planet.  He can play all 5 positions and is a beast on both sides of the ball.  The gap between Lebron and even the next best players (Durant, Melo, CP3, etc) is huge.  Especially in the new CBA, maxing out on 2 or 3 players, no matter how good, is a recipe for disaster.  Kevin Love and Melo are both scorers first, defenders second.  They overlap.  Aldridge might be nice but still, you need a PG.  The best bet is to develop your own players.  For this reason we need to trade Melo for yes, Blake Griffin.  Blake is 24.  Melo is almost 30.  Blake has 4 more years on his contract.  Then when he can sign a new contract the max he could make is 17, still less than what Melo makes now and he'll still only be 28.

Trade for Blake.  Then get rid of everyone else except Shumpert (although at this point I'd be open to trade him), Hardaway, Tyler and Murry.  Chandler can net you some prospects.  Kmart, MWP, Felton, Pablo, Beno…collectively they do not make a good team.  But individually they are decent role players, bench players on teams that are all ready good.  So you can net some second rounders and prospects because none of them make that much.  JR's contract is not good but there are teams that need scorers.  Again, can hopefully net you an expiring or some draft picks, even if they are second rounders.

Then you have Blake, Shump, Hardaway, Murry, Tyler and whatever you get for Chandler and everyone else.  Plus Amare and Bargs.  Maybe Bargs can be traded.  If not, next year you can get rid of them since they will be expiring contracts.  We suck the rest of the year.  Maybe we trade for a late first rounder in this year's deep draft.  We suck next year but we'll have our draft pick, maybe we luck out and its top 5.  Then Amare and Bargs are gone.  Now you have Blake, Shump, Hardaway, Tyler, Murry, plus next year's draft pick, maybe a draft pick from this year or some second round picks, and the cap space to sign some good FAs.  Build a young team around Blake.  You get a coach who is hungry and likes to TEACH basketball to young players.  Then when you've built a winning team that will win 50 games and make the playoffs for several years in a row, that is when you pull the trigger and add a final piece, another superstar to the team.

We are told that Knicks fans are not patient enough for a real rebuild.  But this is a complete lie.  Most of us have been waiting our whole lives for a championship.  We've had one good season in the last 14 years.  The Knicks faithful will support their team no matter how bad they are.  But they would get behind a real youth movement, especially if there was a young stud like Blake as the centerpiece.  People say he's all dunks.  But dude averages double doubles, is a beast on the boards and would be hungry to improve.  The expectations next year would be low.  It could not be worse than it is now.

Not much to get worked up about. This was a typical Knick effort in afternoon games.

@ENGLBERT_HUMPERDINK Whats to say. Blaze cut and copied the same trite info he has previously posted, all I can say is fire the AH coach, get a GM Pres and coach that can. But I have been saying that for a while

@SheSaidSpikeWho Seriously, if Woodson is sticking around, you think Chandler wants to be here? He will get shipped somewhere, be super healthy and productive, and we will all wish that we could have one of the few legit 5s in the league. It's the Knick way.

@dagawd I think none of them should be until they fire woodson. i see your point, but games like this arent about getting the right players.

@Chris @madskills Im actually one of those guys who said trade him but your right. Unless you package him with Tyson to LAL . Then , I think you might be able to do something. Or a team that wants to borrow him for a title run. Then cut him lose to free agency.

But you are right. His options have dwindled.

@Chris @madskills  Hence the reason I said "where he can go and they still have pieces after he gets there". If he is figuring out who has pieces left that would imply he's interested in staying?
