Final Score: Sixers 110, Knicks 106

The Knicks lost to the 76ers tonight by a score of 110 to 106.

The Knicks looked decent in the first quarter, with some good dribble drives and swing passes that led to open looks from downtown. Sadly, they played slim to no defense and found themselves down 33-26 after the first frame.

Bargnani took advantage of his start and played well on both sides of the ball, scoring 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting with 4 blocks. He took a scary fall in the third quarter but he and his elbow were fine.

Evan Turner was Philly’s best player tonight, scoring a career-high 34 points on an efficient 13 of 22 shooting including a late fallaway that put the game on ice.

Melo scored his first points of the evening on a foul shot with 3.6 seconds left in the first. He ended with 28 on 10 of 23 shooting and 7 assists.

The loss extended the team’s losing streak to five. Sigh.

Ben Kopelman

Buhguhguhguhg. Ya know?

0-3 to start the team’s eight game homestand. When you lose to the Pacers and Clippers you can make excuses. The Nets and Sixers? Not so easy to rationalize. A really really demoralizing loss.

When you dig yourself a hole early, you rarely have enough to close out a comeback. That was precisely what happened at the Garden this evening, with the Knicks clawing back to take a fourth quarter lead before relinquishing it with slow legs on defense down the stretch.

Despite playing from behind all night, the Knicks battled back and showed some mental toughness tonight. They had me believing they were in that “refuse to lose” mode, but alas, they allowed the Sixers to win with wide open shots on just horrible defense over the final five minutes.

The Knicks got killed on the glass, 54 to 39. At one point in the second quarter Philly had 10 offensive boards while the Knicks had zero.

For good long stretches tonight, the team’s offense actually looked sharp. The Knicks used ball movement to get good, open looks from their three point shooters with regularity. Why this team decides to play one-on-one so often is baffling.

For what seemed like the first time this season, the Knicks played well with Melo on the bench in the fourth quarter. The team scored the first 10 points of the fourth, including a ridiculous shot by JR and a 1-on-3 and-1 from THJr.

The defensive remains a game of switch-first, think-second, and the Sixers exploited this all night by getting mismatch after mismatch that led to easy buckets. JR Smith shouldn’t be switching to guard Hawes. They are just going to get the ball to Hawes. This is basketball 101, and how this is the same defensive system that Woodson has had in place for the last two years is beyond me.

I waited a looooong time to lose faith in this team, but after tonight, I don’t know how much more I have left. A bad team with a superstar is still a bad team. Prove me wrong, please, but I can’t pretend I am expecting much from this team anymore.

The Knicks next loss game is on Friday night when the team hosts the Charlotte Bobcats. MSG @ 7:30pm.

bottom line it's the nba. you can't get the stops when it counts, you will not be a contending team. what i see in the knicks is lack of effort. more than i see lack of talent.

mw is a lost cause. opposing teams don't even have to watch film we're so predictable. our playbook is stale and easy to counter. bottom line: we svck with mw.

As for the moderation of profanity, I think this blog should adhere to the Chris Rock theory of profanity: It's all about how the word is used in a sentence. For example:

1) This (Knicks' predicament) fvck!ng sucks - not offensive

2) You (fellow poster) fvck!ng suck - offensive

It's like pornography: you know it when you see it.

I don't know if I can go on defending Woodson.

They were rolling and he decides to start subbing.  Yeah, they should hold fort, but why 'hope', just go with what is working.  Like Clyde always said, players doing well don't get tired.  And get this, when asked after the game why he started subbing, he said, and I paraphrase, 'I went with the lineup that worked for me LAST YEAR!'  LAST YEAR???  How bout right now?!!!

And I think the league has figured out the switching scheme and are taking advantage of it.  It killed us last night!

I have two young boys who I am trying to make Knick fans, but I don't want them to get accustomed to losing and they don't understand my undying love for the Knicks.  I am lost in Blue and orange...

If you were from a different planet and showed up at MSG last night having never watched an NBA game, you would have thought Evan Turner was an MVP candidate. Evan Turner!!!!!!!

The names, faces and uniform designs change but the results always the same: we are getting our @$$e$ kicked out there on a daily basis. The fight is gone, and the coach has no answers.

This season is lost. Period. In the unlikely event this squad takes advantage of a woeful East and sneaks into the playoffs, they will go nowhere. That is a guarantee.

At this point, with nothing to play for and no draft picks, I worry about three things: 1) Knicks' ability to position for a re-tooling, 2) Risk to our best player of injury as Woody plays him ~40 mpg to save his job and 3) impairing the development of young players by sending the message that effort is optional.

#2 and #3 are reasons (among numerous others) why Mike Woodson needs to be immediately fired. No more excuses. No more second chances.

As for #1, we need to be in this deep draft. I would move Chandler or Shumpert for picks, ideally mid-first round, which I don't think is an unfair expectation.

I'm getting real sick of this new format. I just posted two links of the angry knick fan from youtube, and both of my posts are pending moderation. I simply stated, "angry knick fan" and posted the links...no name calling or profanity but this ridiculous posting system has to moderate that?

the fans here are just like the team a bunch of individuals with no concept of team, its not spelled with an i  go back to school and learn bb 101 before you make bigger fools out of yourselves than you already have.

remember pretty soon the ecf and mvp will be well within our reach there's plenty of time left so say the believers.

This team couldn't win back fans if they go 10-0 and know that's not happening.

Nor would they be at .500 if it did!!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, this season is a wrap.

Such a friggin' disappointment.

We going to have a fire sale now and give away the ranch for 3rd round choices in 3014 and give Woody a raise for putting up with this mess in such fine fashon. The man hasn`t even gotten a T during this fiasco, showing true discipline

The big question:

How were we top-4 last year with the same coach and the same players, and this year we're one of the worst?

This is one of the biggest, most mysterious turns for the worse in NBA history IMO.

How do you explain this?

They lost with horrible defense in the last 5 minutes? How about the entire game. They gave up over 60 in the first half. Thats awful.

Knicks are 0-5 since Tyson join the team and Woodson must be fired! the guy doesnt adjust to in game situations at all

ENGLBERT_HUMPERDINK

Chandler then was asked if he was surprised Woodson took out a unit that had built a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter spearheaded by Pablo Prigioni and Andrea Bargnani.

“A little,’’ Chandler said. “It is what it is.’’

Chandler, after the loss to Brooklyn on Monday, said Jason Kidd’s Nets “outschemed us’’ and wondered if the switching defense was effective with this personnel.

Under attack, Woodson fired back before the game, defending his strategies.

“When we were on that stretch where we won our defense was pretty solid,’’ Woodson said. “We haven’t made a whole lot of changes. We could play some zone, [but] I don’ think anyone complained during that five-game stretch.’’

A Team USA source said Chandler and Carmelo Anthony will be named Thursday as part of the 28-player Team USA roster for 2014-16.

Anthony said he will not play this summer’s FIBA World Cup in Spain but is still “open’’ to the Olympic Team in 2016.
Chandler told The Post he may want to play this summer, depending on how his body feels.

From Woodson - up to Dolan - and all the way up to CAA... Here lays plenty of blame for this mess.

Dolan is a a privileged, lousy musician with a terrible band.  Yet, he opens for The Eagles.  The Eagles, whom happen to be represented by CAA.   JD and the Straight Shot are STRAIGHT UP GARBAGE and they open up for The Eagles????  The "Hotel California" Eagles???  Come on!

The deal between CAA and Dolan puts the JR/Chris Smith deal to shame.  Dolan cares about his crappy band, not the Knicks.  And Woodson, Mills, Houston, et al, are just Dolan's puppets.  Herb Williams has been Dolan's puppet so long, Herb probably addresses him as Mister Geppetto.

If Melo leaves, I wouldn't blame him.  Now, I wouldn't want to see Melo go.  But, I understand why he would want to leave.  Shame, I think he's the best Knick player since Patrick.  Patrick at least had players that fit together, as well as Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy.  Melo may have a sh't load of money here.  But team-wise?  What is here really here for him?

NYKnickerBocker
NYKnickerBocker

It's not the players' faults.  The New York Knicks are the equivalent of The Island of Misfit Toys.  Maybe we will find a happy home for each one of these toys that nobody wanted.

REPOST

IS THIS ROCK BOTTOM ???

In the final minutes of another disastrous Knicks loss, a fan shouted at Carmelo Anthony “Nice defense, Melo.” According to an eyewitness, Anthony shot back “Go f— yourself,” drawing a reaction from other fans in the area.

After the game, a fan on Twitter wrote “Carmelo told me to F off. Huge Philly fan and I got in his head.’’

ENGLBERT_HUMPERDINK

Obviously we are and did expect too much from this knicks team. As Van Gumby said people always talk about consisitancy but, teams are consistant. They are consistantly bad or consistantly good. Teams that are bad more times than good are simply bad team and we need to STOP expecting more

lindro88

Fire Woody, hire PJ, trade for a real PG and sneak into the playoffs. Or do nothing and watch Denver draft a franchise player. You know with the Knicks luck, Denver will get a top 5 pick.

KnickelusKnickleby
KnickelusKnickleby

Knicks sure aren't playing like a team with no draft picks in 2014

if we was losing like this with a draft pick for certain we all would be talking about this year's draft class.

but as it weighs if we don't make a move soon for a pick or two to sweeten the pot of our losses we're beyond doomed for years to come.

ENGLBERT_HUMPERDINK
ENGLBERT_HUMPERDINK

“Right now we are so tight,’’ Woodson said. “I thought we played great offensively, but defensively we weren’t there. We gave up 110 points and that’s too much.’’

Woodson’s club is 0-3 on the eight-game homestand and lost its fifth straight to fall to 15-27 as it got booed off the court in the final minute and Anthony was heckled.

The only good news for Woodson’s sake is owner James Dolan is still in Los Angeles and will be gone through the weekend. The Knicks had rallied to take a five-point lead early in the fourth before blowing it.

Asked about Woodson’s future, Anthony, who did not address any of the late-game heckling, remained ambivalent.

“As far as that, I haven’t heard anything,” he said. “I don’t listen to any of that stuff. Whatever’s going to happen is going to happen and it’s out of my hands.’’

every team in the nba. is predictable, tha's not our problem .if you play hard and execute your plays. it wont matter. the bottom line is every night there are teams we clearly better than ,that is willing to out work and out hustle us. so until that changes,we will not win

Brostoevsky

That tells you all you need to know about Mike Woodson's knack for strategy. Most coaches make in game adjustments quarter to quarter. This mental midget apparently can't grapple with a frequency of less than a year

@ENGLBERT_HUMPERDINK Rock bottom, for me, was in December.

This just unbearable pain after understanding that there's not a lower point.

I'd say there's nowhere else to go but up, but Woodson is still the "leader" and "coach" of this team....

So...

Yeah. No bueno.

Honestly, they have to make the playoffs. Doesn't matter if they get swept in rd 1. Imagine what the next 15 years will be like if Denver ends up picking a future superstar?

@ENGLBERT_HUMPERDINK the reason Dolan is still in LA is to finalize the contract that Phil Jackson will sign to be the new head coach of the Knicks... and one can only dream....

knickgirl35

@Brostoevsky exactly right.

no creativity

no counter strategy except his ineffective "match ups"

no discipline - yelling and annoyed looks is not discipline

no motivation - he never builds his players up alway tearing them down

they don't demonstrate consistency - it looks like he has ineffective practices confusing the players

they have no core identity

the team is lost and they look it
