Btw not a fan of that "Foxy Shazam" song as our unofficial anthem, but I'd take an excerpt from Pink's "Raise Your Glass."  In fact I'm gonna do that every time we score.

@rmvacation  although I was only able to watch the 3rd, I agree that our D seems to be on Caps mind.  It seemed to me that our D wasn't flopping around on the ice in front of the net.  They were on their skates facing outward and they'd swarm the puck and/or Cap who got in close.  Also great back checking from the forwards.  It made the Caps forwards have to try short quick passes because they didn't have the time to go on long rushes.  Let's go Islanders!

To my knowledge no one has mentioned this as of yet but our expectations of this defensive unit should be much higher than 2 year's ago. Not because they're more mature Ie Hamonic but most importantly our top pair of Leddy and Boychuk is far superior than the duo of Streit and MacDonald. Huge difference this time around. I don't think anyone regrets Garth's decision regarding those two!

Halak made some good saves BUT was extremely lucky last night.   Halak looked shaky and needs to be smarter when he's outside the crease/behind the net.  To be honest I really rather see see him play in net as much as possible.

Great team defense.  Jumping on deflections/rebounds.  Swarming the puck, boxing in and blocking shots.  That's what kept Cap's off the board... that a a little luck.

Thanks.  I'm extremely happy with the win and our D.  Halak looked shaky and he certainly had some luck.  Not a complaint, just hope he can settle in and our boys can keep up the great D!  We win the next game and it's going to be hard to lose this series.  Isles/Rangers, rd 2....  I'm getting ahead of myself again...

Of course, I think Halak will settle in.  I was more happy with our D than nervous from the goaltending..  I feel like our team D was best it's been all season.   Cappy's boys battle level...  off the charts.

@willy- as long as he stops the puck, don't care how he does it.

But yeah, a little less excitement wouldn't be a bad thing.

@willymayshays @mrcisback As far as i'm concerned the game 1 win by the Islanders last night was so important. If the Islanders only win 1 of the next 3 games were still in the series tied at 2-2. Gotta go talk to you later. I see the Knick comments are back again.

@willymayshays its hard to win a playoff series without a little bit of luck on your side.  we've watched every team come in and play us for the past two months and seem to get every bounce their way, so it was a nice change of pace to see a few nice bounces our way.

there is no two ways about it though, we were the better team last night and deserved to win that game.

bosstrots1

@willymayshays  yeah, not sure what the author was watching.  halak was certainly good enough but our strong zone play sheltered him a bit though he did make a few nice saves to his credit. This series is just getting started, expect the Caps to be much better going forward and for Halak to be tested much more than he was last night. lets hope he is up to the challenge.

The longer this series goes without a power play goal, the better for the Isles. The Caps get 25% of their scoring from the man up the Isles gets 20%.

Slap makes a nice point- hard to sit strait down any more. They guy is playing well, and is physically bigger then some other defenders. Wait- read the next sentence.

I thought Trotz had some interesting comments- he isn't worried about line match ups. He is deploying his forwards according to what defensive pairings the Isles have on the ice.

I really liked the Isles pressing Backstrom on the PK- feels like that could be the Frans/Grabner assignment to stay in his face. While they also had a guy withing 6 ft of Ovie most of the time. That should work for a while, until the Caps adjust.

So much more coaching in the playoffs. Last night the Isles coach was clearly superior, for a game.

New day, new game come Friday.

Great play last night and a spectacular result. All should be commended for that effort! The true test comes tomorrow night. You know the Caps will be throwing everything at the Isles including the kitchen!

The series is on the line for them and they can ill afford to go down 2-0 on the road for the next 2! That win last night takes the pressure off of a premature return of Harmonic if he's not ready.

Question is who sits in his place if and when he does return? Based on last night and I'm surprised to say this given he's the most veteran player on the team with the most playoff experience but I'd have to begrudgingly say 11. I noticed he had trouble controlling and mishandled the puck on several occasions. Nerves or was it the game speed? Who knows?

@slapshot18_rs yea.  hickey made a few nice plays but he did get pushed around.  vis had trouble handling the puck in the first period in his own zone.  seemed to be jumping aroundon him.  tough call.  hopefully the coaching staff is forced to make that decision sometime soon.

rmvacation

I think we are gonna see more of that each game. With the last change, it will be more pronounced as the Caps send certain forwards out to attack certain Isles defensive pairings.

I also think you will see the same when the Isles are at home. With Cappy playing certain forwards based on the Caps blue line pairings.

With Hamonic hurt, another blue line injury would be very bad for the Isles.

With no real depth, any blue line injury to the Caps would weaken them severely. Orpik can hit. But both Orpik and Gleason are older and not as quick. The forecheck can attack them.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

we've reached the point where i actually think strait deserves to be in the line up.  he played great yesterday and will stand up for his teammates. i think it will come down to either vis or hickey.  hickey was pushed around a lot.

@time2win  Watching Hickey trying to check Ovi behind the net was almost funny.  Would love to have heard Ovi muttering in Russian as Hickey was pestering him!  Give him credit for doing it and he actually slowed him up a bit.  de Haan has played better since getting back in the line up and as you have been saying, Strait has been playing well and his physicality is needed.  Gotta think Vis would sit.

This has become a true embarrassment for this site and OUR team. These Knick posts have been popping up know for more than 3 weeks...

He has to stop going in back of the net leaving it totally exposed and on top of that, waiting for an opposing player to get near him before he makes a decision. It has cost us big time in the past and will be even more detrimental in the playoffs. He made a few solid saves when he had to last night...but then again, it was a total team effort with our defense playing as well as they have all year! Congrats Jaro, Congrats Islanders...good show...please bottle that formula and do it again. Imagine the barn on Sunday if the Isles are up 2-0!.....Don't know about you guys, but I slept like a baby last night!

<<He has to stop going in back of the net leaving it totally exposed and on top of that, waiting for an opposing player to get near him before he makes a decision.>>

I think that after last night, he knows that now and knows he has to adjust. He's mature enough to admit this to himself and make the necessary changes. I hope I'm not wrong about this.

Of course, a first rate goalie coach might have something to contribute to the process too.

Totally agree every time to tries play puck it's a mistake just stay in dang net

Near flawless game. From top to bottom. Cappy all the way down to Strait.

slapshot18_rs

no reason for halak to ever handle the puck.  hes proven that he is not good at it time and time again.  caps are going to be all over him every time he leaves the net.  STAY IN THE NET!

David Rosenthal
David Rosenthal

@slapshot18_rs Exactly, look for 2 things tomorrow night, Caps to be more aggressive to goad Isles into penalties with hits & shoving after whistle....(lets hope the officials tomorrow night call similar game and arent penalty happy against Isles)...AND dumping the puck so Halak comes out to play it, hopefully our coaching staff reminds him to stay in the net

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

yup, or at the very least be more decisive.  that goal he let up, he was so nonchalant going for that puck behind the net.  outside of that he looked very solid.

@tag1 - Sold out and took one for the team..good call Tag. Snow and Dunham better have a talk with Jaro and his strolls.

You could of heard my yell from down here when he botched the second clear in late in the third.

@tag- That was a big play, but they are all big plays this time of the year. Every shot block is a scoring chance denied. Scoring chances are hard to find this time of the year.

And assists don't get recorded for missed shots. Melo's been incredibly consistent with his play and decision-making this season I think; the guards, not so much . . .
