Iman Shumpert’s injury helps the Knicks long term

Harris Decker

I’m pretty confident that Iman Shumpert wouldn’t be a Knick today if he hadn’t gotten hurt the other night.

Iman Shumpert, Arron Afflalo

He was all but out the door in a trade to the Clippers and a sprained MCL gave the two teams enough reason to stop their discussions. You can say that the injury kept Shumpert in New York, and for that reason, it helps the Knicks long term.

Shumpert is having a horrible season in New York. He’s been a bad offensive player and it’s effected his defense and his mental state on and off the court. He’s been benched. He’s been rumored in trades. He’s a complete mess.

But the truth is, we’ve seen potential in Shumpert before and I believe that in the right system, with a coach that can motivate him, he has the potential to be a much better player than he’s been in 2013-14.

In trading, you want to sell high and buy low. Trading Shumpert right now would be trading him at his absolute lowest point. He’s not only injured but scoring just 6.9 points per game. He’s been highly ineffective and seems in need of a change. I’m hoping that change comes in the form of a new coach after the season. Shumpert has too much potential to trade for a backup point guard like Darren Collison, and I for one am happy he’s still a Knick.

Try and get George Karl and if you can fire Woodson. He isn't doing them any good anymore.

How does Harris Decker come up with this garbage. This guy is the worst writer on any blog I've been on. That's saying a lot.

Knicks trading the project that is Iman Shumpert for an upgrade is simply smart. Timmy Hardaway brings 2/3 of what Shumpert cannot. The defensively OVERRATTED guard has been a bust on both ends of the floor. Knicks are the worst defenders of the three and on perimeter defense. He's not been some defensive stalwart and he even knows it. I think the best thing that can happen, is Timmy getting minutes to improve his defense and the team having an actually opportunity improve because of it.

Now, if only MURRY could blossom and usurp Felton.

DID HE REALLY SAY THIS????

DAMN IF HE DID HE IS A DUMB A-Z-Z M-O-F-O!!!!! DAMN I FEEL BAD FOR THIS KID...

"On their wedding day Felton, 29, was so smitten with Ariane’s light skin and long hair that he said, “Beautiful as ever, from the first day I met her. I’m going to take care of her. You have my word. I promise you. No matter what it is, I’m always there for you. I love you.”

ALSO..........

However, mentally he has alluded to going through tough times and The Post’s Page Six reported Wednesday that Felton’s wife is filing for divorce.

When asked this morning if the reported personal issues have affected his play, Felton said: “That’s my personal life. It’s your life. When you’re going through certain things in life, it’s on your mind, no matter what. You try not to let it come into your job and to your workplace but sometimes it does. You’re human. It’s part of life.’’

FELTON SAYS TO ALL OF YOU...............

“I had one year where I was out of [shape]. Now everybody wants to talk about my weight every year. It kind of gets old, kind of getting on my nerves. That’s all they want to talk about. Don’t make no excuses for me. If you want to say I’m not making shots and not doing something as far as basketball, fine, but stop trying to attack my weight all the time. I had one year when I was out of shape. That was it.’’

Marc Berman @NYPost_Berman

Beno Udrih holds court before game, won't rule out buyout, reminds he's won titles in 3 countries, including Israel.

Scott Cacciola @ScottCacciola

It was mentioned to Beno that he had sat out of 12 of the last 13 games, or something like that. He said, "I stopped counting."

Scott Cacciola @ScottCacciola

Beno reminded everyone he's only 31. "It's not like I'm 36. This season, I didn't really play a lot. So I feel really healthy right now."

Cap Room for another Max??

2015 offseason: With Carmelo's salary that season ($24,142,7891), the Knicks are expected to have five players under contract at a total salary of $39,492,533.

This assumes that J.R. Smith picks up his $6,399,750 player option for 2015-16 and Raymond Felton picks up his $3,950,313 player option. It also assumes that the Knicks offer Iman Shumpert a qualifying offer of $3,695,169 (this could be higher if Shumpert meets the starter's criteria) and he accepts. Lastly, this assumes that the Knicks don't exercise the non-guaranteed option on Pablo Prigioni's contract.

This calculation also includes Tim Hardaway Jr. being on the books for $1,304,520 in 2015-16, the third year of his rookie contract.

The Knicks will also have a 2015 first-round draft pick. It's impossible to predict where this pick will fall. So for the purposes of this story, let's split the difference and assume the Knicks pick 15th.

In that case, they'd owe the rookie $1,600,200 in the 2015-16 season, based on the rookie scale.

Assuming the Knicks renounce their cap holds on all free agents, that would leave them with six players under contract.

With the 15th pick, the five other players under contract and six cap holds for the other roster spots ($525,093), that would bring the Knicks' total salary to $44,243,291. Their actual cap room depends on the cap that year. The 2014-15 cap is projected to be $62.9 million. For the purposes of this story, let’s assume the cap that season is $65 million.

That would leave the Knicks with about $20.8 million in cap room.

Where does that leave them with Rondo, Love, Aldridge, ect? All three players will be eligible for the maximum contract afforded to players with 7-9 years of service. This year, the first year of a max contract for players in the 7-9 year service range was $16.44 million. So let's ballpark the figure and put it at $18 million for 2015.

So if they sign one of these players for a contract starting at $18 million, they’ll have about $3.3 million in cap room remaining. After that they’d have the “Room” mid-level exception which will be about $2.8 million. When that’s gone, their only option will be minimum-salary contracts.

Bottom line on Raymond Felton, he shouldn't take bullets for the entire team. Majority of his teammates have underperformed.

If that is the scenario, you can cross Rondo off the wish list. That team has no rebounding with a core of Rondo, Felton, JR, Shump, THJR, and Melo.

Just read that gotta find a way to bounce jr and Felton

I agree that Felton is not the only problem but he is the pg/qb of the team. His offense has been atrocious but his defense has been the thing that has been even worse. It starts with him keeping guys in front of him, he did an ok job of that last season but this year has been epically bad. Anyone he guards has a career night n most of these guys are not even top flight starting pgs like Brandon knight, jimmer, Jordan Crawford, shall I go on?

I agree with isola a little, shump, jr, Tyson have all been bad but shump has been the worst by far

VerySilentJay

@runtmc @SheSaidSpikeWho  Blame isn't on Beno. He may have come into shape but got burn only because he was a last resort. And just when he started improving and showing signs of life, the coach throws him under the bus.

He was the first Knick to voice his concern about the way Woodson handled locker room matters.

Timmy has a better shot but overall Shump will be better in due time it will suck if he's not with the knicks when he's balling

VerySilentJay

@Frank Gebel @VerySilentJay  Just read it. It doesn't seem like a feasible scenario. Unless Sessions pushed for a buyout, why would they let go of a player they could S&T for in the offseason anyway?

And it's not a rumor, it's an educated guess by the author, assuming that a lottery team's focus is in a different place.

No way. Tim has a way better shot, better basketball iq and probably a better athlete. One other thing u wouldn't thing Shump sucks at is layups.
