Is Steve Mills still in the running for NBPA Executive Director job?

Keith Schlosser, Lead Writer

Upon re-emerging in the Knicks’ organization and meeting with the media at the start of training camp last fall, Steve Mills asserted that he was a man in high-demand. If he hadn’t joined the team as President of Basketball Operations, Mills would have still been considered a likely candidate for the Executive Director position in the NBPA.

But with the arrival of Phil Jackson (and the re-assignment of Mills to General Manager), many initially wondered if the two could work together. Known for reeling in and relying upon his own familiar confidants, would Jackson even want to work with Mills?

Steve MillsAs the thirteen-time NBA champion came into power with the Knicks, Mills’ name once again resurfaced as a potential candidate for Executive Director of the NBPA. A highly regarded individual known for his ability to build relationships and personable demeanor, Mills is well-liked by all. He’d be more than able to help keep the peace between the players and the league. What’s more, whereas Mills’ handle on the basketball side of things in an organization has been questioned by some, his savvy nature as a successful businessman could undoubtedly aid him in such an alternative role.

July 27: Mills replied to the story…

As the NBPA inches closer towards naming its new fearless leader, Mills is not among the three finalists reported by Yahoo! Sports. Having said that, there are still rumblings (as recently as this past week) that the Knicks’ G.M. could still have a shot at the job, nonetheless.

By now, as fate would have it, Jackson and Mills have developed a strong working relationship in recent months. The two could be seen together at NBA Summer League, and as Jackson’s right-hand man, Mills is seemingly the ying to his yang. Whereas Jackson knows basketball better than just about anybody in The Association, Mills knows what it takes to maintain relationships across the league. He’s a schmoozer, which is clearly something Jackson is not. As a fierce competitor, sometimes one has to put their foot on the neck of their opponents to pull away with meaningful victories. As a coach, Jackson wasn’t necessarily concerned with keeping his opponents happy.

Alas, that’s where Mills comes in. He fits in that role as a liaison of sorts between the Knicks and others across the league. As such, Jackson and Mills have been able to find a successful balance of power, or better yet, responsibility.

Surprisingly enough, it would appear as though New York would feel the loss, if Mills happens to pull ahead as a likely candidate for the NBPA gig yet again.

I think knicks win the division so that's get them third seed but idont think our roster is complete yet . We need a better interior defense since our perimeter defense is not better.

I say we are 45 to 48 win team as of right now.

Metta World Peace or Marion

I really think Marion would be a nice singing, plus he's played with Calderon and Dalembert

I haven't been on this site that long... but things are getting pretty out there with these posts.

Don't know if it's always been that way.

Basketball related topics would be nice.

How about the Knicks center spot, any chance of Aldrich playing significant minutes there?

Hawks now have two players on the USA Bball roster. As do the Wizards and the Warriors.

@BiggieTKB Definitely more competition. I think it got better overall, although the top 2 teams got worse which balances things out a bit. I think it will take at least 45 wins to make the playoffs.

@BiggieTKB  As far as competitiveness, it has definitely gotten more competitive, as far as the teams all getting better with the likelihood of an Eastern Conference team winning the Championship, that's definitely not going to happen for sure.

@BiggieTKB I'm just happy there will be more balance now that the Big 3 is no more. I think the East is wide open.

Losing Ariza will hurt but I still like the Wiz. F Brooklyn. The Cavs are a team I will be able to watch. Charlotte should improve. The Bulls are boring to watch but with Gasol they should be improved. The Knicks will be improved with the implementation of a new system. There will be some bumps early but once they get the hang of it they will be fine. I can't wait to see the effect Calderon will have on the offense. I am also interested in seeing if Shump and TH Jr. have improved. I think Toronto will take a small step back but still be a solid team.

@BiggieTKB Dude, I'm with you on that. I'm shooting for 60 and will express some disappointment at 54, like they underachieved. LOL Watch someone take me seriously. Never fails.

@BiggieTKB  That's highly optimistic.  I hope you're right, but I'm setting my sights around 45.

@BiggieTKB  That's pretty ambitious with a rookie head coach but I've learned not to doubt your predictions so . . .

@Biggie. I said 52+ wins and I was crucified.... there is no reason why we should not be 15+ wins better than last year with all the players upgrade and most important fo and coaching upgrade. ..

@jimm120  I'd give you a like as I agree with you, but someone posted the same question just a couple hours ago so it seems you posted without reading.

@Ray Jorge  I'm expecting 45 wins, i.e. 8 more.

I expect most of the improvement to come from the system and improved coaching and stability.  In the early season, there will not be much improvement as players learn the system and go through some rough patches in their belief.  Get ready for the "Melo is a poor fit for the triangle" articles and the "Phil needs to coach" articles as the media nitpicks every bad game.  Then later in the season we'll start to improve.

We haven't really improved our roster much if at all IMO.  We still don't have any 2-way players.  Calderon will help run the offense, but is flawed defensively.  This is a transition year, but hopefully our culture will change, and we will also see a small material improvement.  Anything more will be a pleasant surprise IMO.  If you're expecting 55 wins, you're more likely to be disappointed.

@Ray Jorge

10 - Just on Fisher being our new coach.

6 - New players.

2 - Just because.

The new system and Melo being back will augment those factors. So I say we'll win 55 games.

@SheSaidSpikeWho My mother wanted to name me Amelia but there was a nurse who helped her in the hospital who she liked very much whose name was unfortunately Vernell. So I got my first name second.

@SheSaidSpikeWho Yeah i saw that. Crazy. Very few players in the NBA have the ability to even attempt any of those dunks, and he makes it look easy. If the Wolves pair him with Wiggins, watch out. They might not win a lot, but they are going to make a bunch of top 10 list on SportsCenter!

@stillmatic @biggie pf is the question mark and hopefully stat and barg fill that position. Dalembert and Cole with Stat logging couple minutes at the c position, we should be fine..

johneco

@Tony Fonseca  What player upgrades?  Our 2nd best player is Calderon, think about that.

When Jax returned to the Lakers for a second time, he got a team that already knew the triangle, and whose best 2 players were better than ours:

Kobe > Melo

Odom > Calderon.

Plus he was coaching himself.  They won 45.  Why would we do better?

@madskills @knicksgirl35 Only way to prevent that from happening are for more BS trade rumors to pop up haha. At least it keeps us somewhat entertained.

I agree... But I still don't see 50plus wins yet... The east got tougher as a whole and there are better teams that have played longer together with their core. We are bringing in a new pg and installing a new system
