It’s time to bench Iman Shumpert

Harris Decker

nba_u_shumpert_cr_286As much as it pains me to say, the time has come to bench Iman Shumpert.

This warm Sunday morning, the Knicks sit at 8 and 18 and remain 3 games back in the Atlantic Division. Without question, the most disappointing player on the most disappointing team in the NBA has been Shumpert. He is shooting 36% from the field and 32% from behind the arc, also a career low. The worst part is, he’s started all 25 games this year. The time has come to make a change while the Knicks are still technically in close playoff contention.

While Shumpert has been a disaster this season, J.R. Smith hasn’t been much better. Smith is shooting 33% from both the field and from 3-point range. The difference in their games is that Smith’s percentages have been on the rise while Shumpert’s have been on the decline.

The only player that has been worthy of time at shooting guard is Tim Hardaway Jr. who is shooting 47% from the field and 42% from behind the arc. He’s averaging 8.1 points in just over 17 minutes per game. Compare that with 6.4 points over 28.3 minutes for Shumpert and 11 over 31.2 minutes Smith.

More impactful than per game stats are how much better Hardaway Jr. is playing per 36 minutes. Per 36, Hardaway is averaging 4.1 points more than Smith and 8.7 more than Shumpert. No matter how you spin it, Hardaway Jr. has been more effective than both of the other shooting guard options.

Of course, there’s the rookie factor. Hardaway Jr. is a rookie who is in the midst of his first NBA season. Smith is a 10 year veteran and Shumpert is in his 3rd season in New York. It’s difficult to uproot an established veteran. Rookies have to earn their place but the case has been made and it’s a winning one. Hardaway Jr. deserves to crack the starting lineup over Iman Shumpert and see his minutes increase. Sure it might be catching lightning in a bottle but at this point Mike Woodson needs to try something new.

I would really like to see more base zone looks more often on defense. Straight man for 48mins is tough night in and night out. If were facing John Wall or Teague we know we gonna get burnt man to man. Not many people can stop John Wall so why not more zone defense?

What do I know.

Who is this Jake Sokol charcter?  Dont bench Iman?  Maybe we should promote Woodson for his stellar coaching, applaud Dolan for his hands on ownership style, and bring back Isiah for not ruining a franchise.

JR and Shump have a much higher +/- than Hardaway.

Per 36, they are at around -1, whereas Hardaway at almost -4.

It might mean that Hardaway is a poor defender.

something is wrong with him I don't know what it is..if u watch THJR when he has the step on player its over its dunked  but shump hesitates looks over both shoulders lets guarder catch up and does finger rolls and usually gets blocked also when he goes for the dunks he does the 1 handers he should hold the ball both hands put it to his chest and dunk the ball hard..

How is shump playing any worse than jr? Why not bench jr? At least shump plays d and should be a part of the future.

I've never fully understood the idea that Shumpert has to start. Remember during Linsanity? It was Shump's rookie season. He hadn't done too much until Linsanity. But during that time, Shump really thrived as the defensive SG coming off the bench. After Woodson took over and we had some injuries, Shunp began to start and he's done well during some stretches but I always thought the role of him as a tone changing defensive SG off the bench was a perfect fit for him.

Defense with this team will not be relevant in individual defense. Team defense is what we have to focus on.

Who came up with this bright idea? Shump shouldve been benched and be given as many minutes as his avg.

Firing Woodson is the only way you can cut smith"s minutes, Smith is Woodsons boy. Last years playoff"s proved he is not going to bench JR no matter how bad he may be playing. I have only seen a coach stick with a player when he was playing so bad and that was last year with Rex and Sanchez. Its time for woodson to go and smith to earn the minutes he plays.

With this CAA - CONTROLLED FO, it is no need to stress anymore. I am already(truly) convinced NY is finished. Until Dolan break lose from CAA there is NO hope.

the worst player? he plays defense and even though he hasnt hit much, he doesnt take a lot of shots. JR Smith takes a million 3's a game, he was like 5-20 the other night. JR Smith has been faaaaaaaaaaaaaar worse.

Here's an interview with Chris Smith;

Chris Smith Expects To Stay With Knicks Through Possible Moves Dec 20, 2013 7:56 AM EST

Despite the New York Knicks’ trade search for a point guard, Chris Smith received a call up from the NBA D-League and has remained confident about his roster spot. The Knicks have pursued Kyle Lowry while keeping an eye on Jeremy Tyler, but Smith anticipates staying with the organization past any moves.

“Yeah, definitely expect to be here,” Smith told RealGM. “I feel my number is going to be called soon, but I’m going to wait on it.”

Smith’s validity on the 15-player roster has been questioned and well publicized – only further fueled by the fact that the Knicks needed a reliable big man early this season. Still, Smith, the younger brother of J.R. Smith, has captured support of his teammates with his training habits.

In six games with the Erie BayHawks, Smith averaged 11.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in almost 25 minutes a night. Being groomed as a point guard, Smith left the D-League with an understanding of the effort needed at the professional level.

Smith scored 28 points on 12 of 16 shooting last Saturday in his last game with Erie before returning to the Knicks.

“The D-League was a good experience, a humbling one,” Smith said. “You don’t get all the perks as you do in the NBA, so it was humbling. I’m starting to come into my own as a player and proving that I belong here. Through time, no matter what the situation is, I’m going to stay humble, learn from the vets, and be ready when my number is called.”

Shump has not been good this year, but the real problem is at PG. We have no one setting up easy shots for Melo, Bargs, JR, Amar'e, Shump, etc. I like Hardaway's potential but he has a lot of growing to do. His shot selection most of the time is questionable and he's a poor defender. I agree he needs more playing time. One way the Knicks can do this is by lowering Melo's mins and playing him in the 2nd unit with JR.

Our weakness at PG is also a huge problem defensively. Our bigs are constantly out of position after 1. horrible offensive possessions and 2. After PG's consistently break down our defense off the P&R. Our PG's do a horrible job keeping guards out of the paint. Until the Knicks upgrade the PG position, we will continue lose our games the same way.

Btw, Shump has been doing other things. Defending well and rebounding well. Hustling for lose balls and trying to push the pace. Those things are being overlooked as most continue to kill him.

Sumpert's taken a huge step backward, but if he's to be benched, so should AB, who isn't shooting well and isn't bringing it on D like he was early in the season. Shumpert's immaturity has been exposed and now he's payng that price.

Amare's minutes should be decreased because he's the biggest liability we got, and Aldrich should be given 5 minutes to protect the basket. Murry should play a bit more because of his D and because Beno's awful. Yet life isn't fair and when you have a clueless coach, inexplicable things happen.

Yet we forget, this is all a product of a coach who hasn't figured out rotations, who's killed the confidence of individuals, and murdered team cohesion and chemistry with his lack of adjustments and ideas as to how to correct things. Some may have come in struggling (either because of injuries or whatnot), but overall coaching has compeltely killed this team. Killed it.

How can you, as a player, in all honesty, feel good about the future when your coach openly calls performances embarassing, and later says he has no idea how to fix things or that he doesn't know what to say to his players to motivate them? That's a pathetic statement to make, and reflects just how weak of a coach you are. You literally don't know how to handle your team.

A coach's attitude, leadership, accountability (which doesn't do anymore) confidence, and strength in his system and convictions will be reflected upon his players. A coach that's doing things right not only will reflect on a team's play, but on the overall atmosphere and player's confidence.

Like I said, Woodson's destroyed this team in so many different ways it's crushing to see.

Dark times are ahead.

Woodson needs to draw more plays for shumpert to get to the hoop. That will get him out of this slump.  Get him going early and hopefully that will spark his overall game. How we never drive the hoop is so sad. Shump is struggling mightily with the three point shot. How woodson doesn't change something is terrible. Woodson needs to draw more plays on the offensive end and get players such as Shump closer to the basket.

All my bravado about the Knicks winning a championship this year was based on Felton and JR remaining status quo, with Shump and Bargnani improving.  All have failed so far, so we have no shot!

I like this idea as it sends a message to both jr and shumpert. Tim Hardaway Jr personifies how a shooting guard SHOULD play and he is a fearless player. He also plays smart and doesnt force the action. Shumpert kills this team with his indecisions on offense and his questionable shot taking and jr smith just pretty much chucks anything he can at the rim. THJr plays with a poise i havent seen at his position between shump and jr. Id say start Hardaway Jr over shump. Also if you can, trade Bargs. The more i see him play, the more i see him hurting on both ends of the floor....

Bench Shump, don't bench Shump. Play this guy, don't play that guy. Go Big, play small... whatever.

This whole thing is one big mess really and there is no short term way out of it. What we need more than anything else is a GM that knows what he's doing - like Danny Ainge - who has a plan, a vision and some balls to run the show with minimal interference from James Dolan. Until this happens, all we are doing is trying to run up the down escalator...

I 've been disappointed as to how Shumpert has handled the trade rumors , as it's clearly impacted his play. I thought the guy was a little tougher than this. Conversely, Hardaway's name also came up in the Lowry trade rumors, and the kid seemingly wasn't affected at all.

A number of us have overrated Shumpert to begin with. Regardless of who the coach is, he can't shoot. He's not a point guard. He 's not big enough to play major minutes as a frontcourt man. The guy is a role player. There's nothing wrong with that, as Shumpert could be extremely effective if utilized as such. But if you're waiting for him to evolve into a superstar, you'll be waiting forever.

Railshock

Veteran status and seniority does not give a player an excuse to play poorly, therefore they shouldn't get minutes over a rookie who is playing well. Woodson needs to start THJ and keep him there, at this point we've got nothing to lose.

Jeremy Tyler averaging 17.6 pts and 10.6 reb in Dleague. I know it's grasping at straws and Woodson wouldn't play him but can this guy be of any help to this team? Maybe he's still rounding into form but his last game he had 16 pts and 16 reb.

Shump is very immature and he thinks he shizz don't stink. Really bad combo. Woodson does not know the first thing to do with this kid's head. Get somebody in there who does know!

Shump just wanna Rap..he should sit on the bench and write 16's

he obviously not ready to give it 110% or he'd be shooting after games and working on post moves to get higher percentage shots

..let's just give THJR more minutes

Rebounding, defending, hustling, running, etc... are irrelevant. It's all dependent on shooting and scoring.

When I was 10 and started in a youth league, circa 1962, the coach emphasized that there was only one ball and ten players on the court. He told us most of the time you won't have the ball and you need to figure out what do without it to be a good player.

@solar_lion@Kenny Kaufman As long as CAA books him as the warm-up act for The Eagles, and he gets to live his "Guitar Hero" fantasy out, Dolan will be quite content to let CAA run the show.

Remember: If CAA is booking him, he's their client as well.

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@BiggieSmalls Shump makes bone headed defensive plays I agree. He also gambles a lot and he does play too close. I feel he would be more effective if he defended a step or 2 back. There are times when he would guard someone who isn't a jump shooter way too tight. I know you don't want to hear this but that falls on coaching. What is Shump being taught? The Knicks are doing a poor job developing him.

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@Knicks_Fanatic @NoVaCaInE I wish the Knicks had more players that were willing to do the little things when their shots are off. No one seems to play with any type of energy or sense of urgency when the shots aren't falling.

Dave Hopla is supposed to be the Knicks' shooting consultant. That guy is the best shooter in the world.

Consider the personal records he's constantly striving to beat, records he says "keep me motivated."

  • He once made 1,234 free throws in a row without a miss.
  • He once made 211 high school 3-pointers in a row without a miss.
  • He once made 181 college 3-pointers in a row without a miss.
  • He once made 78 NBA 3-pointers in a row without a miss.
