J.R. Smith a blonde, but not for long

Sam Spiegelman

J.R. Smith got a lofty new contract this offseason, and apparently he’s celebrating in the most unusual of ways.

The reigning NBA Sixth Man of the Year channeled his inner Vanilla Ice and bleached his hair blonde. Think it’s a joke? See the evidence here:

While the Eminem circa 1998 look is totally working for Smith, there’s one person who isn’t such a big fan. He happens to be his coach, Mike Woodson.

According to ESPN New York, Woodson instructed Smith to give his hair a more traditional look, and Smith’s dad said J.R. is complying.

army72 - On Merrick Avenue next to the old barn - there's sports bars- Buffalo Wild wings, Fridays, and several other places. You would like Cafe Baci good place to eat and downtown Garden City, Franklin Ave, strips of places to eat and walk too. A good place is Novita, Grimaldis pizza and bar, Water Zoo and so forth.

I live in Canada and finally talked my wife into going to catch a game at the coliseum this year. Ive never been and im so excited to be surrounded by Isles fans. Not too many around  here. Any suggestion for hotels close to the arena and is it pretty straightforward to travel from Long Islands to downtown NY.What bars do the Isles fans attend prior and after the game around the arena. here's my email address dack1972@yahoo.ca if anyone has any suggestion.  I would appreciated it.

unrelated but, TSN predictions have the islanders basically in the same place as last year with the flyers getting the wildcard. Bob Mackenzie was the only one trying to make a case for the isles being a serious playoff team. Jeremy Roenick last night believes  the isles will be in the top 3 in the metro, mad mike gave no love.

Is it just me or is it a little weird that after we're set to leave the MTA et al start discussing refurbishing an old rail link to the Coli?  Are the Soundtigers gonna keep their name after they come here.  Maybe they should be the Wildebeasts with Kate Murray's face in their logo.

Admit it, doesn't Bettman look like the 'Count' from Sesame Street?

bettman is right. i cant wait for the isles team store to open up in bkn. i also cant wait for the isles to be on a real radio station that you can actually hear in nyc. how great is that. last year snow said it was his fault. this year its all on cappy. no excuses. if cappy doesnt do the job, he  will be gone. if so, the isles have to hire a real nhl coach instead of a ahl scrub coach. if so, then we know this franchise means business. i also cant wait to hear what the new owners say. hopefully this will be a fun season as the excitement grows for when the isles play in the big city. i cant wait.hopefully, the best is yet to come and this is just the beginning.

He says that about everyone. He's never gonna say anything negative about any teams. I don't blame him, it comes with the gig

As far as 27 goes. He will be a beast in the bridge. And will make it impossible fir Garth to not call him up. And when he gets back here he will stay for the rest of the season!!!! ITS ON!!!! ITS ON!!!!!!

Damn right, we have a bright future.  Best team we've had in a long time + great organizational depth + cap space.   It took a while, but it was worth the wait.  Snow missed on a a couple of moves/opportunities last year and failed to follow up on making the playoffs the yr before.  But, I was always in favor of the rebuild and this is why.  Long term success.  I think we have a great shot at achieving that.

Enough of the arena talk. And all the negative garbage. Season starts tomorrow. Let's get talking hovkey

@army72 also down the road from the old barn on Merrick Ave there's Buffalo Wild Wings, Fridays and several other sport bars. One night take your wife out to eat at Baci Cafe on Merrick Ave - great food.

@army72 Glad you're excited to come here for a game!  The Coliseum is old and small, but the sight lines and crowd are great!

I would just use Yelp for food and Expedia, Hotels.com, etc. for lodging.  In general, the area immediately around the Coliseum is not so great, but as long as you have a car, you'll have plenty of options within close driving distance.

If you want to get into NYC and are staying on Long Island, the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) is incredibly easy to use and is about $15-$20 round trip, depending on what station on Long Island you take the train from.

@army72 There's a motel on Jericho turnpike with vibrating beds and mirrored ceilings.  It's hard to get a good night's sleep there however, since you have to get up every hour to pay again.  All things being equal you may want to do the Marriott at the Coliseum.  Don't know what your budget is, but Nassau County is VERY expensive, and unlike those of us who live in Canuckistan, the post game partying is virtually non-existent.  Americans don't do hockey the way Canadians do.

@army72 the mariott is ok, the surrounding area is kind of a dump - much better options for good dining close to the arena once they move to brooklyn.  That said,  fairly close to the coliseum is roosevelt field where there is a good  restaurant called The Capitol Grille, excellent wine list and decent menu with excellent service.  couple of lesser options within walking distance of that. The arena is about a 10 minute drive from there.  Your best option would really be to just eat and stay in manhattan and take a car service if you plan on drinking, NYC has the best options for food and hotels. Try priceline, you can get a 4 star room for a great price -

@army72 There is a Marriott in the parking lot of the Coliseum. It has a bar in the lobby that tends to be mobbed before and after the games too. Could be a convenient spot for you and your wife. There's also a nice sports bar across the turnpike on the edge of Hofstra University's campus. Its within walking distance of the arena. Have fun!

@tonelli27 This is the attitude that chased the Isles from Nassau.  Sorry, but it's the truth.

@dimaio34 Yeah, he will, but I'm still bummed that he's not in the lineup.  I really thought he fit perfectly on the top line.

Wait till the rangers get a look at leddy rushing that puck!!!! It's a totally different place this year. In 30 min on a Saturday morning Garth put us in contender position. Unreal. Just unreal.

You have to take the hockey experts predictions with a grain of salt. It's just their opinion. What you should do is jot down your predictions and see how close you are come seasons end.

Isleguy27

@tonelli27 @jepliberty if Bettman is the Count and Wang is Moe Howard, would that make you two guys Statler and Waldorf? You know, the two crusty old men from the Muppets.

Agree but there is a reason for this. Maybe Garth has a trade in the works. And show casing players

@dimaio34  I totally agree. No reason for Isles to not only make the playoffs but go deep as well.

Actually. Nash. Is the one that needs to be crushed. The rangers are a weak team this year. But what I'm really looking forward to is putting the final nail in the penguins coffin. When that happens I'm having a all night BBQ!!!!
