Jeff Teague would be artificial fix to bigger problem

Harris Decker

The rumor mills were swirling around Atlanta Hawks point guard Jeff Teague and the New York Knicks. It’s no secret that the Knicks need to upgrade their point guard but I’m not sure Teague is the solution.

USATSI_7715101_110579513_lowresTeague was drafted 2009 and has played his entire career with the Hawks, averaging 10 points, 4.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game over his career. He is a career 44 percent shooter. This year, that number has shrunk to 41 percent, the lowest of his career and ranked 47th among point guards. Raymond Felton, the Knicks struggling veteran, is ranked 51st, just a few decimals behind Teague.

The key for a point guard in New York is an ability to shoot at a high percentage, break down defenses and dish the ball to scorers like Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith. In order for this Knicks team to succeed, they need a top flight point guard. They don’t need a middle of the road guy like Teague (or Felton, for that matter).

I’m not trying to diminish Teague as a point guard. He’s a good, young player who has improved his game every year since breaking into the league. This year, he is averaging 7.2 assists per game. That’s good for 11th in the league at point guard. For reference, Kyle Lowry is ranked 9th and Felton is ranked 21st.

Of course, either Teague or Lowry would be a huge improvement over Felton, but at what cost for the future? Going after a young, talented guard like Teague or Lowry would mean that they’d still be in New York (assuming Lowry resigned with the Knicks if he were traded) when guys like Rajon Rondo and Kyrie Irving finally hit the open market. I don’t want anyone standing in the way of those two coming to New York, if that is the long term plan.

If I’m playing general manager for a minute in New York, I’m not settling for a second tier point guard again. I’m waiting, I’m being patient and I’m getting the guy that I want at that position, whomever that may be.

Steve Mills may or may not know who that guy is, but with a contract that lasts for three more seasons and pays $8 million per, Teague is just not the guy I’d want to commit to. He would be yet another stop gap at point guard, and Anthony needs a better scoring partner than Teague.

Get a first rounder for chandler and offer the celtics 2 1st rounders, shump, and bargs .. that trade makes us contenders this year

Rondo/prigs/Murry

Thjr/jr Smith

Melo/metta

amare/tyler

tyler/aldrich/okefor

I still think a third team needs to get involved.  I posted this the other day, but will post again.  I just don't see us having the assets to get the Celtics considering there needs.

Knicks: Rondo, Wallace, Okafor

Celtics: Eric Bledsoe, Felton, C. Frye, Amare, one of the Suns 1st rounder this year, Knicks 2018 pick

Suns: Jeff Green, Chandler,  Shumpert, Knicks 2020 Pick

Maybe we could get away with taking Bass instead of Wallace and having him come off in 2015 as opposed to Wallace in 2016

Harris I agree with you 100%

If they trade for Teague or Lowry presumably they could use them as pawns in a trade for Rondo next year if they are dissatisfied with their play

Apparently they're throwing Chandler into the mix.  While they're at it, they can throw in the entire knicks team outside of Melo and THJ.

Rondo needs to be a good sport and say "Trade me to New York" now before it's too late

so we can make this BK Nets / Knicks rivalry kick off with the defectors trying to claim the city and the lone Rondo coming to a rival team to eradicate them.

Ainge acting like all the picks they have will give them the golden ticket.

So this is how it went down:

Dolan:"Hey melo, we working Jeffrey Teague for ya!! Ya like??"

Melo: Kid from Atlanta? yeah hes ok..."

Dolan: "Just ok?? whaddya mean?"

Melo:  "Not what I had in mind...I was thinking more like rondo"

Dolan: "Mills give boston the house if he wants and MSG, get rondo here"

Lets all relax Knicks fans...just have faith that our management will do the right thing.

-said no one ever

At this point, if they want rondo, they need to throw Shump, cap filler, and two firsts at Boston and call it a day.  They'll prob be two late round firsts anyways.

MeloStat301

People People...if the knicks don't have "assets" for Rondo..whats the scare of getting "fleeced" raped" for rondo?  Cant have it both ways..either you do or you don't.  Give em the house with at least another player coming back, and move expirings in the summer or next season...that is if the knicks celts talks is legit.

sources say knicks going after rondo hard.  Rondo just needs to say he wants knicks.

Thank goodness for the rule that you cannot trade first rounders in consecutive years. I am sure Dolan is trying to veto this lol

i can only imagine when the knicks fo makes a call about a trade suggestion most of the time laughter is all you hear on the other end and that would be appropriate.

This is a crazy report...

If Lebron, Wade and Bosh all opts out of their current contract at the end of this season.  Miami can re-sign all of them , plus add Melo and pay all 4 guys $14.5 mill each.

Imagine a team like that???

onewhoknix
onewhoknix

@KnickelusKnickleby I saw a report on Celtics SB nation blog that an opposing GM stated that Ainge is seriously overvaluing his players. When he pulled off the heist that was the Brooklyn trade, Ainge can do whatever he wants.

@MeloStat301 LOL It may be a great marketing strategy.  Come to the Knicks game, show your ticket and be one of the 3 to be selected to play with them.  Must bring your own shoes!

@MeloStat301 Might as well give Ainge your Private Jet at this point Dolan.  I'm sure a deal would get done

Dolan: Melo we just locked down Teague for a 2018 first rounder and Shump!

Melo: First rounder? I mean..I guess that's ok..

Dolan: Great news! He is on his way from Brooklyn right now!

Melo: Wait Marcus?!

@kneggyknik LOL Then he would have to take a Catscan immediately.  I would like to get him but I'm sure Ainge will take any talent we have in that trade. Melo and Rondo vs everyone else.

@onewhoknix

That is know as as the Stepian rule for the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers who did trade away multiple first round picks for questionable players, ala Dolan. His worst trade was as follows;

James Worthy

February 15, 1980: Traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers (as a future 1982 1st round draft pick) with Butch Lee to the Los Angeles Lakers for Don Ford and a 1980 1st round draft pick (Chad Kinch was later selected).

@cole3244 Maybe after the call is made but not during it. NBA GMs are professional enough not to engage in bahaviour like that.

The nba wont allow it

onewhoknix

@zdiddy4nyk As the game becomes more global, the sponsorships from Nike, Addidas and Sprite for example almost rival NBA contracts for the few superstars in the league. These players are global icons who have so many other sponsorships. It wouldn't be completely a surprise is Super Teams become more common via paycuts from stars given all the money to be made off the court.

orlando_knickfan
orlando_knickfan

@zdiddy4nyk  Hate to tell you but, Indy would kill that team. NO SIZE

Bosh - C

Melo - PF

LB - SF

Wade -SG

Chalmers/cOLE

I don't think the NBA would allow it anyway.

Seth Nadler

@zdiddy4nyk I think that is more likely than the knicks getting superstars to join them in 2015,

@thatsagoodpoint @barnaby87 Couldn't agree more. Tyler, Hardaway, and Melo gotta stay though highly unlikely lol I see this thing developing as Rondo being Dr Frankenstein and Tyler being his monster. Man can dream right?

@knicks50

Stop...Melo wants a ring.  He knows that Lebron got 2 rings because he join other great players.  Melo would do the same, if given the chance!!

zdiddy4nyk

@orlando_knickfan

Indy wouldn't...Hibbert would not have the same effect, because he would have to guard Bosh on the perimeter away from the basket.

@thatsagoodpoint I do agree with you for the most part but if ainge asks for him there's no doubt in my mind he'll get him

thatsagoodpoint

@melo7 We're going to have exactly ZERO big men on the roster, let alone young big men, after 2015 if we throw him in there. I'm sorry but I'm not interested in causing a problem just to fix one. Let's be smart about this for once.

HypoCrit_calNYKfans

NO, That's what you would do! Some players like Jordan, Durrant, and Carmelo want beat the best! Beating the best is a greater high than winning along side the best!

xmenreturn

@orlando_knickfan Yeah but the heat really needs a big man most. It's not like Bynum wasn't going to get paid his contract money. He opted to be greedy for an additional 700K or so.  Dude's a dummy!

orlando_knickfan
orlando_knickfan

@zdiddy4nyk Okay let's see smarty pants.

Tonney Douglas - trade

james jones - drafted

lewis - no one else wanted him

mason - BUM
cole - draft

beasley - no one wanted him

oden - no one else wanted him

Like I said Anderson was the only impact guy they got for min. You act like some big name FA would go there on the cheap

orlando_knickfan
orlando_knickfan

@xmenreturn dumb or not, there are plenty of guys who could have helped them who did not take the min to go there.

Dudes want their dough!

zdiddy4nyk
zdiddy4nyk

@orlando_knickfan

The Heat have 8 players out of 15 making $1.6 mill or less...FACT!!

They would be able to attract serviceable vets at the min.

xmenreturn

@orlando_knickfan Byrnum proved once again he's dumb. He should have gone to Miami where he could have played.  They don't need him in Indy. Indy got him just so the Heat wouldn't get him.

He may just not even get activated in the playoffs.....which probably would serve Bynum nicely since he has no appetite to compete anyway.

orlando_knickfan
orlando_knickfan

@zdiddy4nyk How come they can't get em now?

Ray Allen - not vet min

Mike Miller - not vet min

Couldn't get Bynum

Couldn't get Nate (they tried I heard)

Got a washed up lewis and oden.

All they got was Anderson coming off of legal trouble

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@onewhoknix Yes, that's a team of the best playing the poorest around the world! lol

Melo may be the T-MAC of the playoffs. I thought the Spurs would take the ring last year then I looked and saw T-MAC on the sidelines and I was laughing my butt off because T-MAC team where he is not hurt never wins anything in the playoffs.

I posted this last year and it surely proved itself again.

@orlando_knickfan The Whole CBA was trying to eliminate this.  I feel they can stop this from happening.

orlando_knickfan
orlando_knickfan

@zdiddy4nyk YES THEY CAN, "Competitive Balance." That's the same rule they used to stop CP3 and Rivers/player swap.

Hell, the players union have stopped signings because of money being to little.

orlando_knickfan
orlando_knickfan

@Seth Nadler NONONO Don't you mistake that my friend.  This is the same league that squashed a legit CP3 trade to LA AND stopped a weird trade that would allow the Celts to get compensation for letting Rivers go.

Rivers would have been free and clear.

Seth Nadler
Seth Nadler

@rgm891 @zdiddy4nyk@Seth Nadlerwhat do you mean the nba allow it to happen, each would be a free agent and each player could sign with which team they want, NBA can't do anything, it's not like a trade that can be denied
