Kerr wants to coach in NBA, declines comment on Knicks

Adam Zagoria, Team Reporter

Steve Kerr confirmed he would like to coach in the NBA at some point but does not wish to comment on the Knicks’ situation right now.

“Yeah, I’ve said that publicly many times but, I’m not going to even go down that path for obvious reasons,” he told SNY.tv and The Knicks Blog Wednesday at a brunch promoting CBS Sports and TNT’s coverage of the NCAA Tournament.

A New York Post report linked Kerr to the Knicks, should Phil Jackson accept the front office job. Kerr played for Jackson with the Chicago Bulls before later becoming GM of the Phoenix Suns. He now works for TNT and will work the NCAA Tournament.

“I think people just connected the dots,” Kerr said. “I think Bill Simmons said something the other day on the post-game show [on ABC's coverage of the Bulls-Heat game] that kind of stirred the pot and all of a sudden I show up in New York for NCAA Media Day. It’s total speculation at this point.”

Asked what Jackson could accomplish running a team with no draft pick and limited cap space, Kerr declined to go into detail.

“Well, again, because I’ve been thrown into the mix, I don’t want to be quoted on all that stuff,” he said. “It’s sort of unsavory in a lot of ways for me because there are people’s jobs at stake.”

Mike Woodson remains the coach of the Knicks, winners of four straight following a seven-game losing streak. The Knicks remain 3 1/2 back of Atlanta for the No. 8 seed in the East.

ray Jorge - its no coincidence that the knicks stink and are a team revolved around Carmelo Anthony - what don't you get? A successful NBA team cannot be led by Carmelo Anthony

Steve Kerr is a smart muthafugger- and a reg'lar guy. NYK would be lucky to get him. (not to mention - Big Feel...)(props to Stacy King)

Hello Melo Haters: Here's a question: Exchange Felton with any top 15 point guard, what do you think our record would be with this same team???

Patrick Ewing should be a coach before Steve

I wonder what kind of lives some of you Negative Nasties lead. If your obstinate and contrarian comments are any reflection of your lives, I pity you. And you guys know who you are.

Rookie GM and rookie coach? Who knows how that will work out?

With phil in charge ,,he'll have to try to convince Melo to take a 100 mill contract instead of 130 ............bring the 13 rings and call it a meeting !

Steve Kerr is the logical choice, if he wants the triangle offense run. Don't sleep on his "son", Kurt Rambis either.... Kerr reminds me of a Jeff Hornacek type guy that has a lot of basket ball knowledge, and has already worked in the front office..... If we can recall, he was part of the Phoenix staff that wouldn't give stat more than 3 yrs... That alone, shows that he knows more than anyone we have had around, and his 5 rings hold some weight while telling players what to do.... Add in Phil's 11 and there's 16 rings/reasons why to like that combo.... I would prefer Thibs, but doubt that's happening.... The Jackson'S ( Phil n Mark) would be a nice NY combo also...

@chudogzNo way he's bringing Rambis in as a head coach!  Assistant at best.

@Sandro @Knicks_Fanatic Wrong..PHX..has done a decent job...they have fallen off a bit lately...but a rookie gm and rookie coach worked well for them...can not see Phil Jax in charge, how it doesn't change the culture here.

@thatsagoodpoint. I believe they were in win it now mode, and honestly I would prefer to trade for a 35 year old Shaq, then Bargnani at 25 ;)..... But THATSAGOODPOINT...... And BTW, as a coach, he can't trade for anybody :)

@thatsagoodpoint @chudogz

Kerr fired D'Antoni because of his lack of defense and then Phoenix played even worse defense under his guidance. They went from 16th to 26th.

@xmenreturn. Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, but I've seen stranger things happen ;)

@MeloStat301 @Sandro@Knicks_Fanatic

It was cloudy when I predicted a bad season for 2014.
It was cloudy when I predicted Woodson as a bad coach.
It was cloudy when I predicted that Chandler + Amare wouldn't work.
It was cloudy when I predicted that LeBron wasn't coming.
It was cloudy when I predicted that Billups shouldn't have been re-signed.

I like mine's cloudiness. It gets thing right.

@Sandro @zdiddy4nyk@MeloStat301@Knicks_Fanatic Sandro stop the BS!!! You damn well know if we exchange RONDO or any top 15 NBA PG for Felton with this same squad were a top 3 team in the EAST!!! Stop lying & saying MELO is the problem but injuries & assanine behavior/play by most of our guards!!!

@Sandro LMAO!  The tough East is so tough it's hard to get half of their teams above .500.

In games, they beat the heck of of each so that both teams get a lose. lol

@Sandro @MeloStat301@Knicks_Fanatic That makes complete sense...I'm with you...but you can build it either way..it has been done...See the pierce garnett Celtics...see the miamt heat...ect.

Phoenix has a team. They will add a Superstar later.
That's the way to go.

The Knicks have a Superstar. They don't have a team.
That's clearly not the way to go.

@Knicks_Fanatic It was the 2nd year after Pringles left. They went to the conference Finals that year and they were still coached by Gentry.

@xmenreturn @Knicks_Fanatic

The Suns were 26th in defense and didn't even make the playoffs the year after D'Antoni left.

Now you are making me laugh. Isiah's last team was 29th in defense. There was no where to but up after that.

chudogz1

@ Knicks_Fanatic. Let's keep in mind, he had STAT on that squad, we all know how his D is

@Knicks_Fanatic Gentry had them playing better defense the year after Pringles left but they quickly returned to poor defense the year after that.

Once Pringles ball come to ya city, it's very hard for some to give up that bad candy!

Ya see what it did to our team!  People here were crazy over the stuff for years and that after we had built a legacy on tough defense here.
