Kevin Love open to playing for the Knicks?

While the Knicks still search for a head coach having been spurned by Steve Kerr, could Kevin Love be headed the the Garden?

He’s open to the idea according to Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News. In Lawrence’s notes column he writes that while Love’s preference is to go to the Lakers he’s open to playing for the Knicks:

Kevin Love’s people reiterated to the Timberwolves this past week that they had better trade him or else he’ll leave via free agency when his contract is up after next season. With Love looking to exit, there’s your No. 1 reason the T-wolves have not been able to find a head coach to take over for Rick Adelman. Love wants to play for the Lakers but he’s also open to coming to the Knicks.

The disgruntled forward has told the Timberwolves that he wants to be traded or he will leave via free agency.

The Timberwolves, according to Yahoo! Sports, are for the first time openly considering a trade of Love. The Lakers, Celtics and Suns are expected to be among the suitors.

Boils down to what number LAL gets in the draft. They get a 1-4 pick you will bet they will try and trade it for Love. They end up at 7-11 they won't have as much leverage.

Knicks have expiring , young players and a center. A deal is possible. Depends what they want , cap space , picks ......

Im sure they would be open to trading Rubio by now . Shump , Chandler , Amare or Bargs  for Love & Rubio.

Im pretty sure Gasol will give NY a good look also.

Imagine Melo , Love and then 2015 lock in our 3rd star.

Rubio / Pablo

THjr / JR

Melo /  ?

Gasol / Odom

Love / ?

We have options but it will be Love who picks...

TKB, I have a complaint, why would I be interested in Brook Lopez' opinion of himself, D-Will's ankles, or the Nets meeting with Napier. I'm interested in the Knicks.Change the "You May Like" to Knicks news. Anyone else get the Nets articles there?

Why would the Suns or anyone else trade a 1st round pick for Chandler and his $14.6 million salary when Kevin Love and his $15.7 million salary is on the market? I'd assume that most teams will keep their powder dry hoping to get in on the Love sweepstakes. Doubt a Chandler deal gets done before the draft.

The fact that Kevin Love is demanding a trade is not a positive sign for the Knicks. We can lust over Love day and night, but we don't have the goods to make a deal. The odds of franchise players making it to the free agent market are becoming increasingly slim. Teams are going to lock up their stars or get value for them in a trade. We may get to 2015 with a pocket full of cash and no one to dance with.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Bulls will attempt to sign international prospect Nikola Mirotic this summer.

Unless they are talking him into going somewhere in a trade Signing Mirotic means they cant fit Melo under cap takign a big discount (even assuming they dump dunleavy and boozer )..

Well...if you believe you can get a 1st round pick from someone for Chandler, you could take that 1st round pick, Hardaway Jr , Shumpert and expiring of Amare or Bargs and offer it for Love and another contract they want to move such as K-Mart....etc...

BiggieTKB

I think the Celtics, Lakers and Phoenix (and probably Golden State if the want to include Klay Thompson) have more to offer Minny for a KLove sign and trade.. Even if we had the picks from the bargnani trade and Novak's scary talent on the roster.   The Lakers and Celts have a better draft position in a "loaded" draft and the Lakers have raw cap space to send a trade exception there in addition to picks..

reports say the Rockets will be agressive as well .   I dont think that Asik/Lin combo is as valuable a trade asset as others .. Clearly Morey values it high or they'd both be gone as they've been shopped heavily. parsons will have to go.

Im solidly in the No KLove for the Knicks camp.  Woody on Mike and Mike in the 9am hour.

We are not getting love. Lakers will get him. Melo n love do not mix. Unless melo is gone. Still we are not getting love regardless. He is using knicks to drive up price.

Resign melo, trade chandler n whatever expiring contracts you can. Get a pick, buy a pick n spend the 3 mil exception we have. Get a pg n triangle appropriate players. It's all about getting guys who fit this system.....not just name guys

More Kevin Love news from The Post.

All along, the Knicks were preparing for the distinct possibility Kevin Love would never make it to 2015 free agency, that they would need to potentially do a sign-and-extend trade similar to the way they obtained Carmelo Anthony.

A report Sunday said Love has already told Minnesota officials he will not sign a contract extension this summer and will become a free agent in July, when their chances would appear bleak. Hence, rampant speculation is Love will be traded by the Timberwolves either this summer or by February’s trade deadline.

According to an NBA source, Knicks president Phil Jackson has been plotting to be involved in making something happen with Love via a trade.

However, the report stated rather than the Lakers and the Knicks being Love’s top two choices, the power forward is more interested in Golden State and Chicago. It’s unclear if Steve Kerr knew Love’s preference when he chose to coach the Warriors, but it’s very possible.

Adding Love to the Knicks’ mix with their 2015 cap space is one of the selling points for Anthony to stay in New York. It’s doubtful a team would trade Love for just a rental. Another source said the Lakers also will make a monster push at trading for Love, who played at UCLA.

The Knicks believe they have the expiring contracts — Tyson Chandler and Iman Shumpert in particular — the Wolves might want so Minnesota can keep cap space to go after the star-studded 2015 free agent class.

But the Knicks can’t give up a first-round pick until 2018. Saving that 2018 first-round pick for a potential Love deal was one of the factors in the Knicks deciding not to offer it to Toronto during Kyle Lowry talks.

If we made a trade for Love

It would be

Barg Felton Hardaway and 1st rd pick in 18

Only offer that would have a shot straight up

Now if u trade Chandler and get a 3rd team involved u could make a better offer

This is the second suspicious Berman article in the Post. The first was that Phil "lowballed" Kerr with 3 year $13.2 million offer. Now we have Berman claiming that Phil is offering Chandler and Shump for Love. Minnesota already has Pekovic and Dieng locked up there for years. As far as Shump, they have Martin, Shved, and Muhammad signed for years at the 2.

It's looks like someone is leaking unflattering information to the press. Perhaps Phil is trying to move out some front office people and they are pushing back. The idea that Minnesota would take Chandler and Shump for Love is downright unbelievable. Looks like troubled times until Phil can clean out some of Dolan's crew.

Seems like Boston has the most to offer, 9 first round picks in the next 5 years, young talent, and Jeff Green. Boston's pick this year is going to be quite good, maybe Minnesota could get Julius Randle to replace Love at the 4 with it.

The Love Sweepstakes may end worst than the Melo Sweepstakes ...but than again if we lose Melo at least Love can be a good acquisition

might as well give it a shot

According to Berman of the Post, Phil is going to try and sell the Wolves on a package of Tyson and Shump for Love. I'm not even so thrilled with giving up Shump.

I thought that Mark was the man for the job but after some digging as a leader, he is too abrasive to any organization and NY media would have a field day on the Knicks. It would be the gift that keep on giving. ..

If worst comes to worst, Felton can be bought out. That would remove his player option for 2015.

Mirotic is a PF and the Bulls also have Gibson at $9 million and Boozer $16 million at the PF, so something has to give if they sign him.

@anthony G. Decesare

I like the idea of swinging Chandler to the Suns/Mavs/etc.  for a 1st rounder.

But not the idea of flipping that asset along with Shump, Tim Jr. for Love. Knicks should just stay away from this one.

@thatsagoodpoint setting his Market?....Kevin Love's MARKET is a Max Deal,  without question. He doesn't need the Knicks in the mix to get that.

@jax13 Nope, it's always about getting named guys. Phil doesn't win with just role players, he wins with Hall of Famers. So yeah, the more names the better.

@Frank Monastra Get real.

Bargs is worth less than zero.

Felton is worth less than zero.

You'd need the 2018 1st rounder just to get rid of them (if you were lucky).

So basically you're trading Hardaway for Love, I'm sure Minnesota is just thrilled with that.

Frank Monastra

Celtics shouldn't go any higher then Green Sullinger and their 1st rd pick this year

If I'm wolves I take it, Love gonna walk

Maybe add couple 2nd rd picks

Listen to be honest Melo or no Melo, I think they have a better chance of grabbing Marc Gasol in the summer of 2015 and Kryrie Irving in 2016. I think Melo end up with either Houston, Miami or the Knicks next year. If Melo does leave would like to some how get something back for him in a sign and trade, maybe Lin expiring, Asik expiring, Chandler Parsons and a 1st round pick for Melo, then trade Chandler to someone for another 1st rounder.

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

I agree. Enough of depleting our team for one dimension player

solar_lion

@johneco @Frank MonastraI agree. But I think he's thinking that Bargs is near instant salary cap relief. Felton not so much. But he could be stretched or bought out. Though stretching his doughy arse would really be tough.

@Seth Nadler Minnesota could do so much better than that for Love.  No shot of that happening.

Still think the Lakers are the overwhelming favorite because they'll presumably have a top five draft choice upcoming to trade.

Seth Nadler
Seth Nadler

I'm sure that's possible, as I stated yesterday, what is Minny want in return, draft picks then Knicks have no chance, if it's cap relief and some young pieces, Knicks have a shot, but my guess is Minny will want all 3, draft pick, cap relief and young players

Tony Fonseca

Well we get rid of barg stat chandler and Melos contract, we basically have nothing on the books besides donut felton and a lot of minimum contracts. We should not give max contracts to none of them though so we can keep the flexibilty to sign an emerging super star guard in 2016

Tony Fonseca
Tony Fonseca

I would trade Melo to Houston in a heart beat for Parkins Asik, Lyn, and a 1st rounder. Then, I would wait for 2015 and grab k love, m Gasol, and Lowry.. then develop shump, thjr, and the two draft picks. With Lyn as a back (3m), Parsons and couple role players we would be one super star away of a championship team

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@illmatix @Eric Raffle@thatsagoodpoint

I'm sure that Minnesota is more than willing to offer him a max deal. Plus, Love's max deal will start at $16.7 million. It's not a cap buster like Melo's, whose max deal will begin at $23.4 million.

JCFromCNJ
JCFromCNJ

@illmatix Don't know why, the guy is money, career 20 pt/12RB. If Phil is all of that, prove it, if he can get rid of Bargs, and pick up Love at the same time, I'll be impressed.

BigChiefTriangle
BigChiefTriangle

"so the same applies.  What cheap young talent will sign with Minny long term?

if they acquire young talent that young talent will want out eventually."

Yes - and that's what makes it tough for small-market teams (and why the CBA allows the home team to re-sign its own player).  The point is that Minny will take the poor odds of re-signing that cheap young talent over the infinitesimally small odds of luring a big free agent to Minny.

You answered the question, "Why would Minny want Chandler?", with "so they  can be viable players in the 2015 free agent market", without bringing up any 3rd team.  So it seems pretty sensible that some of us responded with why expirings wouldn't be that valuable to Minny over young talent and picks, given their situation.

BigChiefTriangle
BigChiefTriangle

@NoVaCaInE @Mel Brown @Seth Nadler

Exactly - expiring contracts are far less valuable to small-market teams, who are forced to rely more heavily on players acquired via draft and trade.  What big-name free agents is going to sign in Minny?

The T-Wolves will want picks and cheap young talent with upside coming back above all else.  And several other teams have far more picks and young talent to offer when compared to NY. A 2018 pick is too far out to offer great value to a team looking to rebuild now.

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@Knicks_Fanatic @NoVaCaInE @Mel Brown @Seth Nadler  Exactly! They could even try to unload K-Mart with Love to replace Thompson's production.

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@Seth Nadler  Agreed. I can see them wanting a combo of young players and picks. They've done a great job managing their cap as well. So, I don't see them looking to dump contracts.
