Knicks Blog Player of the Week: J.R. Smith

Sam Spiegelman

Given the Knicks’ disastrous Christmas Day performance, it seems silly to dish out an award for outstanding play.

But, in the absence of Carmelo Anthony against the Thunder and an early week victory over the Magic, J.R. Smith stepped up offensively.

Smith scored 18 and 20 points in the two games this week, and has scored in double-figures  (18 points per game) in each of the Knicks’ past five contests.

Over the past games, Smith has been a more consistent shooter as well with a 40-percent mark from the field and 45 percent from the perimeter.

While Smith’s inconsistency has been maddening this season, it appears the sharp-shooter is finding a groove. He certainly stepped up his game against the Thunder on Christmas, though he alone could not keep pace with the high-flying offense headlined by Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

Don't even waste your time trying to highlight a player of the week from this team

He's had one game that wasn't terrible.  You have got to be kidding me.

Knick player of the week, really?

Why is yesterday's game continually being referred to on this blog as disastrous?  Did anyone expect anything more once Melo was out?  OKC is an elite team and there was no one on the court to stand in their way.  What outcome was expected with JR Smith covering Darant?  The Knicks had four guards on the court for most of the second period, none of which even have any business being in an NBA starting lineup.  This team is exactly what it is.  The depth was totally overrated to start the year and the starting 5 can not compete with the top teams, particularly from the West.

This is nuts ...

This is not only Nut, it is crazy !

We can't form a competitive team paying 25 mill per to Melo, unless he's agreed to take much less he must be traded..

going hunting for injury prone sidekicks is gonna get us in the same hole where in now..

did the bargs trade help?  no, dude is worth 6 mill and no picks, yet we pay double and give up multiple picks.

we are run by a clown and we will always be a f'ed up franchise until we change ownership or Dolan hires a smart person and gets out of his way... neither will happen.

These thread topics get worse every day.

This is worse than the Chandler /Wiggins or whoever quote post

LOL.  JR player of the week?????  That really is depressing.  Guy got booed off the court yesterday for good reason for all his lazy chucks and that's called "stepping up his game"?  What has this team come to...

THE STEP BACK!!!

dude is a bum, nothing but a high volume chucker..  dude shooting 30% from everywhere..

his only game, is throw up bad shots until they drop. If he wasn't Woodson's son he'd be on the bench a lot more.

trash

Here is my trade to for the clips if that is being entertained

Clips get: Melo, Metta World Peace

Knicks get: Griffin, Collison, Bullock, Dudley, 2014 1st Round, 2016 1st Round.

It should be a very interesting Thursday at the Knicks practice. I'll bet the ish is flying.

JR certainly stepped up on Christmas versus the Thunder, posting a +/- of -32.

kenmetskni

Pathetic. Don't even do player of the week if JR is your only choice. The guys immaturity and attitude cost us in the playoffs last year. This year he has been a total disaster. Just cut his sorry a--.

When JR is your player of the week, it surely has been a weak week!

Man, I just can't win period!   I see that VerySlientJay has signed a contract to have Biggie Rewite represent him now too!

VerySilentJay now says he has been demanding for a change including a coaching change since a very long time ago!  YIKES!

Sometimes when ya say the darnest things ya really need to stay very silent.lol

Is anyone else so sick of watching JR jack up step back jumpers?

20 pts on 22 shots is a very bad game.

@Marvel 6th man of the year..trash...right...I understand here in NY os "what have you dopne for me lately"...but its one of the main reasons people don't like ny or don't like to play here./  The guy had no summer/training camp and no real pre-season, hes obviously getting better...JR  will be fine, yes he's inconsistent, but he isn't this bad.

@orlando_knickfan I'd be happy with just Griffin, Bullock and Dudley, he leaves for nothing otherwise and the Clips hold all the cards in this trade. They are playing well and their two stars are signed long term.

@orlando_knickfanTruly without coaching situation, I would truly think about letting the STATues contract run it course and maybe even letting Melo go so that we can start over with youth for once in our time.

I am so sick of this endless game of bringing in wrong personnel without any real chance at winning anything.  I think we fans would he encourage to have a young team with salary room to see who we can bring in to help us and compliment our youth.

Let the Nets pick the old guys. We have done that for decades and have very little to show for it.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@OLD_KNICKLOL They both suck right now but I can see the Nets getting better before we do.

The Nets are not playing hard for 4 qtrs and no one is stepping up on that team period now.

Our Knicks suck because we are a total perimeter team without a PG capable of making us anything different and a coach that has no clue.  Melo will check out soon and just worry about getting his stats.  And speaking of STATues, he reminds me so much of Eddie Curry in that for whatever pts he make son offense he gives us double or more on defense.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@OLD_KNICK

The Nets are sucking up the place now.   D-Will has been very slow like he does when he gains weight and is out of shape.

JJ is the biggest disappointment because he clearly disappears and play soooooo soft.  Dude has an open shot but will opt to dribble into the defense and then take a bad shot.   I thought with the additions, he would move to the 5th option because as the #2 option, the Nets will never go anywhere with him.

Pierce and Garnett have shown their age for sure but I thought they would be most effective int he playoffs and that getting thru the grinding regular season would be the challenge for them and Kidd.

They miss Lopez but that team should be playing much better without Lopez. It's no excuse whatsoever.  They suck now period.

@po_diddley He might have been the worst knick player of the week.  TKB is trolling us.

@xmenreturn Well he has been calling out the coach for quite some time now. He just doesn't post one liners like "FIRE WOODSON".

Dude, your never ending posts of bashing other posters in this site is getting very old. Time to move the fvck on.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@xmenreturn What is your deal?

If you actually take the time to read posts, you'd see that I was calling out Woodson early into the season.

Clearly you don't take the time to read posts as much as you take the time to justify your Jets.

If anything, I justift the players.

The coach, never.

xmenreturn

@OLD_KNICK

Our team has no identity and frankly we're still a perimeter team with inconsistent shooters.

Last year we had better pure shooters and veterans with a a better b-ball IQ.

JR is lost and should be coming off the bench at best.  Woody f##ked bigtime by trying to make JR a starter and not keeping him under control.

JR is best when he play unselfish and attack the rim.

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

Correct, but when Woodson gets on JR about taking too many bad shots what happens? JR acts like a spoiled child and decides to not shoot the ball for an entire game. He was obviously acting out if spite. Like he was going to teach his coach a lesson. And yet, Woodson continues to start him and play him big minutes. They need to get rid of this guy. He is a cancer to a team.

NYKnicksPodcast
NYKnicksPodcast

@MeloStat301 @Marvel his career hasn't been great either.  Not sure how he won 6th man of the year last year considering he had a 25 game streak that was really good, surrounded by 25 games streaks of the same trash he's been dishing out this year.

SheSaidSpikeWho
SheSaidSpikeWho

@D.Salahudin @orlando_knickfan How do they hold all the cards? They are over the salary cap. The only way they can get him is through a trade. If Carmelo leaves in the offseason, the Clippers can't sign him outright. Knicks own leverage as well.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@po_diddleyReally?   It's the same posters who kill people for pointing out things that are realistic and then come back later and state the same thing as though it never happened.

These are the so-called fans that kill others for stating things only to say the same thing later.

So if ya don't like me pointing this out then move your eyes some place else. These are the same characters that do this time and time again for years.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@VerySilentJay@xmenreturnLMAO!

So you thought we would be better than last year but you wanted the coach out?  hahahahahahaha

Biggie Rewrite is going to make a killing off of that contract you signed. lol

kenmetskni

Woody's trust in JR will cost him his job eventually. When Udrich talks about guys blaming others, I wonder if he means that JR is blaming him.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@Marvel@MeloStat301 Like I said, it "what have you done for me lately" and that's fine, but I rather go on a whole body of work/career rather than 28 games...he will turn It around, he is 28 nowhere near his downfall in career, he will be fine.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@orlando_knickfan@xmenreturnTrue but I see see us making a mistake a try to move him earlier for another so-called has been star.

We are not a team that's close to winning a ring and that is why I was so pissed last year because that was our opportunity to make some noise in the playoffs.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@xmenreturn @VerySilentJay Never. But of course, when you kack reading comprehension in understandable.

Biggie andI have been in this place the beginning.

Normally, we see things in the same fashion, but when it comes to Woodson it isn't the case.

But like I said, when you don't have the facts, words have no substance.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@VerySilentJay@xmenreturnReally? You never agreed with Biggie that we would have more wins this year?

hahahahahahaahaha

Biggie Rewrite is earning that money now!  I should buy stick in him since he's so well needed here.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@xmenreturn Get a grip. Either your reading comprehension is beyond awful, or you are not reading.

At what point did I write, anywhere, "that he would be better". How you're just making things up.

Once again, read and analyze.

Rinse and repeat.

xmenreturn
xmenreturn

@kenmetskniYEP, Woody don't have the nerve to tell JR that he is best served off the bench and that he  needs to stop with the jump back jack...ing up shots routine.

JR was so effective last year when he made the extra pass to others like Novak and when he attack the rim more than just trying to jack up shots.

The players are surely to blame but they don't have a defined role because Woody has lost the team.
