Knicks coveting Spurs PG Patty Mills

The Knicks, who will use a mid-level exception to target a free-agent point guard, have reportedly set their sights on Spurs backup Patty Mills (Post, June 16).

Mills, 25, had always been on the Knicks’ radar for this summer, and bolstered his stock with a solid performance in the postseason.

A source said playing in New York would be an intriguing option for Mills as he would have the opportunity to build his game outside of being Tony Parker’s backup.

“New York is definitely a city Mills would want to play in,’’ the source said. “He has that personality.’’

With 14 third-quarter points – including the kicker to the Heat in Sunday’s Game 5 clincher – Mills’ market value may have climbed out of the Spurs’ range.

The 6-foot point guard opted into his contract of just 1.3 million last season and now is an unrestricted free agent.

Even though the Spurs may not be looking to shell out for a backup point guard, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich recognizes Mills’ importance to the team.

“He’s a special guy,” Popovich said Sunday. “His energy has been important to us all year long. He’s a real significant reason why we got to the Finals. That energy, that team sense that he has really has become infectious for everybody.”

Love Mills, but he's not a starting PG in this league. He's an instant offense guy. Everyone looks great as part of the Spurs machine.

many players look good until they play the iso game of getting melo the ball then watching the one on one, but that's the mentality of melo and his groupies and their brand of i bb ny style.

The more likely destination for Mills is Golden State. He played for St. Mary's, they need a third guard for their rotation so they don't continue to kill Curry with minutes, and they will give him the full mid level. The only thing the Knicks can offer is making him a starter.

If Melo walks, this team becomes a wasteland for the foreseeable future.  I hope Jackson is enjoying his vacation after having been on vacation for how many years?  Do you think there is another GM in the NBA out of the country right now?

Fisher instead of WoodRow and Mills or whoever instead of Fatty is a great start for Phil....whether the Negative people on here can see that or not is a whole different story.... I see atleast 10 more wins based off that alone...

same cycle...good player...has one good year under his belt..becomes the player dujour.... is intrigued by NYC.....Knicks go over the top to get him....throw him in the mix and make him fit.  Mills would be an asset....he has a better shot to fit in than most.....but like most hot prospects, the Knicks had their shot at him when he coulda been had ...cheap....now ....really how do they get him at a reasonable cost....?.  They need a 4.5 Assist guy.

....Send Chandler off the Dallas and get Shane Larkin ....a guy who can actually distribute the ball.....plus a pick plus a another guy....

Mills reminded me of Sam Cassel circa 1994..ice in his veins, killer instinct, showed up when it counted.

(you watching JR Smith?)

Wow, the perfect PG for a triangle outside of guys like Avery Bradley.

Naturally Melo has no brainz to see that Fisher will alter the offense in far more positive ways than Woodson did.

Random, but could anyone else see a three way trade happening with the Knicks, Minny, and either Chicago/Houston that sends Melo to Chicago/Houston, a package to Minny, and K-Love (plus maybe a pick/a little cap filler) our way?

The Knicks pitch to Melo probably included the idea that the current team as assembled could win 8-10 more cames than last season. That would be a 45-47 win team. Here is a quote from Derek Fisher;

“In my opinion, I believe that success and failure are not as far apart as people think. It’s pretty close. And when you think about [the Knicks] winning 37 games a year ago, there are a number of things that you can isolate with the same exact roster that can provide 8-10 more wins without a change of any kind,” Fisher said last week, in an interview on ESPN NY 98.7 FM’s “The Michael Kay Show.”

“You can make more free throws. You can have a player miss a few [fewer] games due to injury by handling some things smartly due to practice time, recover time, nutrition, etcetera. There are a number of things that are the difference between winning and losing.”

Fisher’s an optimist, but he’s also a realist. In predicting results for a team with “the exact same roster” as a season ago, Fisher is indirectly acknowledging that the Knicks likely won’t have much opportunity to reshape the roster this summer.

New York is projected to be over the salary cap, so it won’t have significant money to offer free agents. The Knicks also don’t have a pick in the 2014 draft, though they are interested in acquiring one.

Fisher’s prediction is also based on the assumption that Carmelo Anthony will re-sign with the team. That’s far from a certainty at this point.

Very good fit for the triangle. Under Pop, as do many players, he thrived. Wasn't utilized properly in Portland.

I wonder what SA plans to do with their role players. We know they can put together a bench quicker than anyone, but championship bench has its appeals.

It'll be interesting to see if players such as Mills would sacrifice money to stay in a winning situatio or if they'll go for a solid paycheck that may never come around again.

Patty Mills pretty much played like Derrick Fisher and Steve Kerr did for Phil. Easy to see why he would be on the radar.

Perfect move! Go after players that have a all about team mind set. We keep goin crazy over cap space but Phil told players from day1 that everybodys not comin back this season #Watch4TheTrade

@hashburry If melo walks, this team becomes 1 year full of mostly expiring contracts and then instantly rebuilds in 1 year.

@chudogz  had the team played how they did towards the end of the season we could have had 47-50 wins

@illmatix

You know...  it's not exactly losing him for nothing if you consider the money freed.  If you work a trade for Melo and get crap or money tied up in contracts in a desperation move, it may be better to just let him walk.  And when it comes to Rose... I wouldn't risk it. With Rose's type of game, I think he's going to have knee issues forever.

Ugggh.  You reminded me of 1994.  A series I believe the Knicks could have won if it wasn't for that toxic avenger looking Cassell.  Well...  and John Starks, but still!

@ReneNYK1

The Bulls would be better off, just amnestying Boozer and giving Gibson away to get the cap space to sign Melo outright. Melo won't strip another team of too many assets again.

barnaby87
barnaby87

@ReneNYK1 We're not getting Taj AND Jimmy AND Mirotic AND two 1st rounders.  Potentially a package involving Taj and Mirotic and 1 first, but that trade yields a whole lot more than what we shipped to Denver for Melo initially.  Also, we can't get there 1sts from this year since we can't sign and trade Melo until July 1st, which is after the draft.

Knicks_Fanatic

@barnaby87

I don't believe Minnesota will trade Love until well after Melo makes his decision. They will try to get him to resign and move him at the All-Star break, if he wants out.

@pezhao. You think he's gonna get more than the MLE from someone? Please explain... San Antonio had to pay Kawhi big bucks and Mills is unrestricted FA... It's possible in my opinion

@OLDKNICK I totally agree with you. He is like Nate. He can win a game for you if hot. But he is no starting PG, no way.

@VerySilentJay Mills is 25 not some player out of college. He deserves the pay raise. He cant be playing for the minimum just to stay on a contender. These atheletes get paid a lot but only play for 8-12 years if they are lucky and getting a pay raise comes few and far between. Not only does he need the money, he needs the minutes to find out what kind of player he truly is in the NBA. He cant get that playing behind Tony Parker. Whether he goes to the Knicks or not, I think the right move for mills is to leave for a starting position. He has that here.

bb_dot
bb_dot

@VerySilentJay He thrived under Pop because he was only asked to come in and bring energy with some scoring. That wouldn't be his role as a starting PG for the Knicks. He is not a facilitator nor does he have the ability to control the pace of a game from what I have seen. How is he a good fit as a starter?

Also, I think bench players usually go for the paycheck. For good reason.

theking
theking

@Kvdaone  a pg that averages less then 2 assist is a team player but our small forward averages 3 and he is selfish? ok I get it now

hashburry
hashburry

@Mel Brown @hashburry He's not getting more money in NY.  Where did you get that idea?  The Knicks can't pay him and San Antonio has Cory Joseph to step in for Mills.

hashburry
hashburry

@Lee Lewin @hashburry That was the assumption with LeBron.  There is an overwhelming sense of entitlement among Knick fans that is based on absolutely no history of players wanting to come here.  Amare was just looking for a max contract and Melo really had no idea what he was getting himself into when he forced the trade.

chudogz1
chudogz1

@theking. Exactly... That was Phil's input that made us see a difference, plus Murry was getting run, which I'm sure was also Phil's doings...

@NYKnickerBocker @rico Yup it was Cassel who really was the death knell in that series, 20 years ago this week.

ReneNYK1

@BiggieTKB @ReneNYK1 I'm just throwing out starting negotiations,Butler,Mirotic and future one but they can't amnesty Boozer their too cheap so that is worth something too.So Gibson has to come my way too.

chudogz1
chudogz1

@BiggieTKB. You mean Felton SUCKING? What was his excuse in Portland.... Too many visits to the refrigerator would be my guess... Go Knicks! New coach new point guard, way better system = atleast 10 more wins!!

chudogz1
chudogz1

@BiggieTKB. You left out one key factor: WORST COACH IN THE LEAGUE... My 3 year old can call ISO on offense and switch on defense, and be more stubborn than a donkey, by leaving the worst point guard in the league in the game , continuously, even after going on a great winning streak while said SCRUB was "injured"... People are oblivious!!!! Now that's a CRAP shoot if you ask me, shooting a bunch of CRAP!

chudogz1
chudogz1

@pezhao. There's nothing delusional about getting Patty Mills... He's an unrestricted free agent who made $1.3 mill last year... Kobe can stay right where he's at. We already have 3 of the worst contracts in the NBA! Rondo fans can keep dreaming, Boston wants assets in return, not ASSES, which is all we have

barnaby87
barnaby87

@theking @Kvdaone He wasn't asked to be a facilitator; he was asked to be a scoring option off the bench.  Not comparing the two directly, but did anyone ever call Steve Kerr selfish?  He averaged 1.8 assists per game for his career.  Why?  Because his role was to be a scoring option off the bench.

Kvdaone
Kvdaone

@theking @Kvdaone Patty played the way he was asked to. Patty did what was needed of him. Melo has a totally different role as a superstar. So if a pg comin off the bench is avgn almost as much asts as a star wing man who logged the most playin time last season.....whats wrong with that picture?

JerseyFan1
JerseyFan1

If he came to NY he will get the 3.2 mill(mid-level) compared to 1.3 he recv'd from SA.

hashburry

@chudogz My memory must be fading, didn't they lose to the Lakers by 40 with Jackson watching and the playoffs on the line?

chudogz1
chudogz1

@Scott Berger-Felder. They did run ISO, when necessary, not all game, but at end of close games or closing out quarters and halfs... Pippen averaged 20 with Jordan running ISO all day? Grant used to score down low way more often than the whole Knicks team this year... Shaq had plays called for him on the regular, as did Robert Horry....

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@thatsagoodpoint @Knicks_Fanatic

No, I don't think the Bulls would amnesty Boozer, but they aren't going to give that much away for Melo. They do have that option and it will be leverage if the Knicks want to do a sign and trade for Melo. They will not ship out all their assets when they could spend $16 million and keep Butler, Mirotec, and 2 first round picks. It just doesn't make sense for them.

no difference I guess

@pezhao  Mills is hardly a hotel chain.  So are you saying that 3M per (assuming we were to offer him our full midlevel) and the chance to be our starting PG is not enough for him?

tell me a team that wins with the highest paid player averaging 12 ppg. assist is a reflection of ppl hitting shots not of passing and btw 3 assist a game is average for a sf/pf do some homework homie ..

Kvdaone

@theking @Kvdaone @barnaby87 an ast is not just about hittin shots. An assist is based on the facilitator creating a play to get their teammate the best look. What they call delivering the ball to your sweet spot. Bball IQ is a must if you always want the ball

@Kvdaone @theking @barnaby87  I said its average for a sf/pf and plus he is not there for being a pg .. he put up shaq numbers last year did anyone else? exactly why he doesn't get "regular sf/pf money"
