Knicks expected to sign Lamar Odom on Wednesday

The Knicks are expected to sign free agent Lamar Odom by the end of Wednesday (Begley, Apil 16).

The reason for signing Odom with just one game remaining, via Sports Illustrated:

The Knicks’ real motivation: A non-guaranteed second season through which New York would have the option to retain Odom for the 2014-15 campaign. By signing him now the Knicks would effectively sidestep all of the league’s rules regarding offseason contact between teams and free agents as they would relate to Odom. He would be a Knick for all intents and purposes, which in this case would give Jackson and team officials the very important means to gauge Odom’s injury and frame of mind in the months to come.

Odom did not play in the NBA at all this season. He signed a two-month contract with a team in Spain, but returned after just one month due to a back injury. He only appeared in two games for the Spanish team.

Maybe we should sign Pookie from New Jack City to play the point.

I can picture it. Lamar Odom walks into a barbershop exclaiming "yo yo got those MSG water bottles, cheap!"

we could be tied with Atlanta after tonight and those losses to Cleveland and Milwaukee will haunt this organization for the rest of the summer

Instead of bobble heads they'll be giving out crack pipes on "Odom night".

As I posted yesterday, for the 15th spot, Odom at his worst on the court is a quantum leap ahead of Chris Smith in the 15th spot. And should Odom fail a tinkle test, you can bet your life that Chris Smith will still be available.

I see that phil is still playing chess while some on this board are playing checkers.

Phil kniws Odom is done, but this is not about that. Its about a getting a vet, a champion, and triangle knowledge, without being hampered by the rules.

Mike Woodson on his future: "Is it fair to let me go? I don't think so."

"If they bring me back I'll make damn sure this doesn't happen again."

LOL

Anyone questioning Phil Jax moves should get spanked.

The end of the Woodson era is nigh!

I like this bc it's tells us that Phil plans on bringing the Triangle offense to NY. Can't be mad at that.

I hope one of the writers post a keep him or dump him survey....it would be interesting.

One of Phil moves to bring in players that knows the triangle. Won't be surprised if Attest is back.

In Phil I trust

Interesting signing. If Odom can get his act together, he could be a nice player off the bench for 15-20 mins a game. He has a good Basketball IQ.

I really wouldn't be surprised if Phil decides to coach. Or, he's really comfortable the coach he is about to hire, can run the Triangle. I would love to see Phil coach the next 2 years. Implement the triangle and mold the next coach.

I guess they didn't sign him on Wednesday.  NEXT TOPIC PLEASE!

Can odom be that player that comes back home and does better than mabury and artest

Odom's last season was back with the Clippers in 2012-13. He played all 82 games, basically in 20 minutes got 4 points, 6 boards, and 2 assists. At the very least, he didn't miss a game with an injury.

I think the Odom signing is perfectly fine.  If Odom steps out of line, he can be dropped instantly and his money is not guaranteed.

On the positive side of this risk, Odom knows the triangle, can play many positions and is a very unselfish player with good height.

Phil has to know that next year he is very strapped for as what he can do in getting better players.

If Melo goes, it would be nice to have someone like Odom who can help make others better with his unselfish play.

The big changes should occur in 2015+.

I would even entertain bringing back MWP for the minimum or a Odom agreement.  We need toughness and smartness!

Odom by being on the team can fill cap space on a multi player trade of whom I hope Chandler is at least one.....

Signing Odom is not a very good move...the guy has nothing to contribute. Apparently the Knicks hasn't learned that 90% of the time, these desperation moves do not pay off. Baron Davis, Kenyon Martin, Ron Artest, Kurt Thomas, Marcus Camby, T-Mac, Cuttino Mobley, Carter, Rasheed Wallace, etc., etc. - all failures.

Not to mention that a gathering of players with drug problems is not a very good idea...but JR Smith will surely disagree....lol

No a great Phil Jackson moment. to say the least....

Does not hurt anything to give the guys a chance to recoup his lifre and Phil knows him and he knows the system,I like Phil already to give a guy a chance to get his life together is awesome and a great moral act by Phil.Everyone deserve a second chance.

I know people hated the CAA stuff, but Phil seems to be headed towards the pathway of bringing in "his guys" as well. Lamar is done.

Hopefully our next coach, whether it's Kerr or whoever, can allow this team to play how they are playing now for the majority of the year.

Off topic, but Chris Johnson to the jets!

"Of course, I’m signed up to be part of this program," he said, adding, "I think the future can definitely be bright. I think we have some positive pieces. We just have to understand how to put them together."

-Tyson Chandler

Tyson has been calling out Woodson all season.

@thatsagoodpoint We go through the same cycle of delusion every year: a lot of fans go to irrational extremes trying to justify the acquisition of fringe/washed up talent. All of a sudden, the numerous failures in the recent past don't matter. Odom will surely succeed where Camby, Thomas, Davis, Wallace, Mobley, Artest, Udrih, Carter, T-Mac, Francis, Martin, etc., etc., failed.

@OLDKNICK  It is a free signing, we have an open spot this year so he is a free space not involved in what we can do next year. Its like getting a leftover cheap, and no risk, doesn`t work, no loss? Why not, Phil is a smarter version of Pat

xmenreturn

@OLDKNICK Odom is not a superstar but he is a smart unselfish player that can play many positions. We are getting him dirt cheap so what's the risk?

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@OLDKNICK

We don't really have many options for next season to sign free agents, so it's taking a flyer on a former 6th man of the year who knows the triangle.

@brookdon  Phil may be all zen for his sh!t, but the dude's as stubborn as they come. He'll either triumph or fall  by his ideals.

Everything points in the direction of Phil building a house entirely comprised by his people.

Whether they're the best candidates for each role....only time will tell.

VerySilentJay

@mel brown  All talk. No substance.

It doesn't matter whether you believe in your coach or not...you give 100% every night.

Chandler didn't do this.

No excuses.

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@sir_manolo @NoVaCaInE  I hear you. I would much rather him implement the system next year. Get Melo, Shump, Timmy and JR familiar with it. If Melo resigns, Those will be the 4 on the books along with our draft pick in 2015. Get those guys comfortable.

I'm really worried Melo will leave. Only way I see Melo staying is if Phil pulls off some great roster moves this summer or Phil becomes the next coach. Phil should coach and hire Kerr as his assistant coach. Groom him for 2 years, then pass the head coaching job over to him.

@akamarb In fact, Odom became a drug addict UNDER PHIL'S WATCH!!!! lol

@akamarb agree 100%  our 3-13 start was the season.  6 more wins and we coast into the playoffs at the 4th seed at worst.

ReneNYK1

@akamarb @ReneNYK1 @brookdon  You forgot Rasad Jennings who was real good last year and it's funny you mentioned our backups and injured player for comparisson,I'll bet Jennings out plays Chris Johnson who is totally done.
