New York Knicks v Miami Heat - Game Five

Knicks have three of the ten worst contracts in NBA

J.R. Smith, Andrea Bargnani and Amar’e Stoudemire are three of the worst ten contracts in the NBA, according to Bill Simmons.

Smith’s deal checks in at No. 8, Bargnani at No. 3 and Amar’e takes the top (bottom?) spot on the list.

“For Knicks fans, he’s simply The Broken-Down Guy We Got That Summer When We Thought We Were Getting LeBron,” Simmons said of Stoudemire.

Between the three players, the Knicks owe them over $86 million over the next three seasons.

Across town, the Nets also have three of the worst deals in the NBA.

Still can't figure out what the issue is with Donovan. I think he'd fit great as the third pairing

I would think the Isles bring back Hickey.  Along with De Haan and Strait I would think the Isles look to integrate at least one of the youngsters.  Bringing back Lubo creates a logjam for a guy that won't get many minutes and easily gets injured.

Last thought:     I've seen mayfield play 20-25 games in the last 2 years at Bport.   Read the reviews from all the pro scouts re Mayfield as they are on the money.    He doesn't skate well and is often beaten by the faster and more  skilled players...      And this is in the AHL!        I hate to say it, but if you had to compare him to somebody it would be Carkner.  Not a long term answer for them on defense.

By the way, they should not trade DeHaan as he is going to turn into Dan Girardi if they just play him, leave him alone, and he stays healthy.  Like Josh,  they are fu#*ing up his development.

@drgary Actually, I would say de Haan's about the only player whose development the Isles' haven't hindered. It's ridiculous that Isles can't make Grabner an effective player; Red Wings sure could. Anders Lee, Brock Nelson, Ryan Strome -- these are players that should make HUGE strides next year. De Haan too, it's that damn shoulder.

doc942

@Logan Monstuart @drgary How do you know that the Red Wings would make Grabner an effective player?  He is an effective player, but just maybe not as productive as you would like him to be.  Doesn't mean the Red Wings are the only organization that produces effective players.

There are under productive players scattered all around the league.

How did the Red Wings do with Stephen Weiss?

In the playoffs, Washington exposed Lubo and Hickey as too small, especially to play together!      The team is very disappointed in Reinhart  (a bust #4 pick???) and feel Pullock is close but needs a bit more time.    I expect them to pick up  a veteran  dman and don't be surprised if they trade DeHaan for a draft pick as it seems they've soured on him.

I've been saying that about Viz and Hickey. Their size issue was exposed in the playoffs. Worse yet when playing together both of them together couldn't clear the crease. They need size especially if they're keeping one or both of the smaller defense men. Viz has the concussion issues and Hickey, although durable and reliable looked like a pinball vs the caps

So long as we upgrade the top 4 and If its cheap insurance, i can live with it if only for the sake of the power play.  I can live with Hickey too after a strong playoff but he has to be better than last year which is still possible for a guy who played bigger than his size and with more poise 2 and 3 seasons ago at this point.  If Strait is back at the start of the regular season its bc one of the younger guys didn't step it up in camp, i'll be horrified if strait stunts the development of someone who deserves to be up here playing. Hopefully DeHaan is trade bait, i hope Garth has a good weekend and unloads some "passengahs" while they still have value to other teams bc of their cheap deals and past relative success,

@bosstrots1 Who do you want to get to upgrade the top 4? The free agent group isn't real appealing..

Don22
Don22

@bosstrots1 The problem is Boss, upgrading the top 4 isn't going to happen.  Short of a blockbuster trade, those guys don't become available.  There are none on the UFA market.

I can see them bringing in another defenseman, but nobody of significant impact.

Logan Monstuart
Logan Monstuart

@bosstrots1 Guys, and Erika, I admit I appear to be wrong about Chris Campoli, but you all seem to be wanting to jettison de Haan very prematurely. Unless that shoulder is now permanently disabled, few teams have the top four Isles do. A stud would still be nice, and that left wing... We have all the extra chips needed to make that deal happen, your old four-for-two, question is do we have the gm to make it happen? Me says no.

I'd love it if Chicago needs to make room and possibly be willing to trade Seabrook. Nice size and right handed shot

Lee Forman
Lee Forman

He'd be a great 7th D man or when the PP needs a boost. Not a regular anymore.

Alex Ferguson
Alex Ferguson

Lubo was very useful when healthy for this team. I cannot imagine that he will cost a whole lot and won't really be blocking the younger players too badly since he will need days off/will be injured. Depending on the price, I have no issues with one last Lubo-round.

Dan Corrigan
Dan Corrigan

We should find a dumpster on the BQE and toss Visnovsky Streit and Hickey in for Christ's sake. Lubo was good 5 years ago but needs to hand up the skates. Hickey and Streit have never been NHL caliber defensemen

islesguy80
islesguy80

Thank you. Only poster here who understands. Hickey and viz constantly pass the puck infront of our own net...thats hockey 101 you do not do that. Hickey cant contain anyone he is too small.

Streit last played for the Islanders in the 2012/13 season.

mrcisback
mrcisback

It seems like the Islanders are open to bringing back Hickey,Strait and 39 Year old Visnovsky.  I thought the Islanders would have learned there lesson. We finished 22nd in team defense and if we return with same 5,6 and 7 defenseman we will be once again be on the bottom of the league in goals given up.

primus
primus

Mrc, I think the difference this year will be that one of the kids will make the jump to the NHL. Hopefully they can make the impact we want and need. No different than how we put faith in Lee, Strome, and Nelson to help the team progress.

That being said I would like to see the team add defensive help.

rmbbanned2

@mrcisback Your gonna get:

Boychuk, Leddy,

Hamonic, CdH

Hickey somebody

with Strait and VIZ at the bottom

@mrcisback @primus

<< #4 add a defenseman through a trade. Numbers 5,6,7 pick from Dehaan, Donovan,Pulock,Reinhart and Mayfield. >>

I would prefer they pick up a veteran ( 33 - 35 years old) for the # 5 spot, and let the rookies compete for the #6 and #7 spots, and fill in when a Dman gets hurt.

I'm not particularly comfortable with the 3rd pair being two rookies.

vegasvic

I would break up boychuk and Leddy.

Boychuk Pulock

Hammer Cdh.

Leddy Mayfield

Don22
Don22

@puckdad99 @mrcisback @primus hey Puck - I agree with you except I would switch up the order.  I don't think you want one of the rookies as your 7.  If one or more of them makes the lineup, they need to be top 6 and play.  You can't have those guys sitting.  You CAN have a guys like Lubo, Strait and Donovan sitting.

mrcisback
mrcisback

@primus Primus i can deal with maybe 1 of the 3. My team defense would consist of #1 Boychuk,#2 Leddy,#3 Hamonic #4 add a defenseman through a trade. Numbers 5,6,7 pick from Dehaan, Donovan,Pulock,Reinhart and Mayfield. If Pulock,Reinhart aren't better then Hickey and Strait were in trouble.

Just watched a few of Scott Mayfield fights on the Hockey Fights videos we all should chip in and send him to a school to teach him to fight, sure, he is a big kid but he cant fight worth a damn, maybe they should forget about bringing him up for at least 2 more years, out of the 5 videos he got clocked in 4 of them.

Hi jep

Isn't cairnes part of the islanders staff? I am sure he can give him some pointers

Jim Miller
Jim Miller

@jethrono9 He looked real good to me when called up. He has a ton of skill. Given time, he'll gain in physical stature and will hold his own.

doc942
doc942

@jethrono9 So you want to keep him in the minors because he would probably lose a fight at the NHL level.  Wow!  The comments on here get more dumb every day.

jethrono9
jethrono9

@doc942 @jethrono9

Want a dumb comment? Heres one, doc942 knows all there is to know about hockey, now is that dumb enough for you? He is being projected to be an in your face dman, and if that is true, he better learn how to 'drop them' the comment i made about keeping him down is due to his lack of experience, and lack of fighting style, until he bulks up a bit more, got it?

puckdad99
puckdad99

@jethrono9

In the off season, Matt Martin, in addition to all his other off-season conditioning, took boxing lessons. Maybe MM should give SM his instructor's name and phone number.

rmbbanned2

@jethrono9.

Better to skip the fighting, and work on his skating ability. Quicker and faster feet, not hands..

doc942
doc942

Angry much Jethro? Your comment said nothing about his lack of experience and lack of fighting style. You said "he can't fight worth a damn, maybe they should forget about bringing him up for at least 2 more years, out of the 5 videos he got clocked in 4 of them".

So what you're saying is that no matter how good a defenseman he may be, if he can't fight then don't bring him up.

Every one in your book "needs to bulk up a bit"

Just keep repeating the same line over and over.

de Haan needs to bulk up. Dal Colle needs to bulk up. Reinhart needs to bulk up a bit. Hickey needs to bulk up a bit. Nelson needs to bulk up a bit. Strome needs to bulk up a bit.

I guess if everyone just bulked up a bit the islanders would have won the Stanley cup. The Capitals were the biggest team in the NHL this year. They didn't win the cup.

Mayfield is listed as 6'5" 218 on the islanders web site. His bulk is just fine.

primus
primus

You are not going to hold anyone back because of how they fight. If you haven't noticed that part of the game is getting less and less important. It's about what his abilities are on the ice, not his fighting skills.

lolz

what do you guys think of the cam talbot rumors

puckdad99
puckdad99

@lolz

Not a whole lot. It's no secret the Rags are going to move him ─ either now, in December, or at the trade deadline next March. And the Rags aren't going to trade him to the Islanders.

Ross Hammond
Ross Hammond

We need big, strong, young defenseman, not Vis.

islesguy80
islesguy80

Does anyone else realize that both of these players are pretty bad? Hickey is really just awful. Dont say hes good for his size because even if he was 4 feet tall and played this way he'd still suck.

doc942
doc942

You don't know what you're talking about if you think Thomas Hickey is a "bad" hockey player. Is he Paul Coffey or Denis Potvin? No. Is he "bad"? Certainly not.

elephant

I'm assuming the whole "both these players are really bad" comment is sarcasm? Or perhaps you don't actually follow the Islanders or hockey in general for that matter.

islesguy80
islesguy80

Clearly you dont considering viz and hickey are not nhl defenseman. Both 7th dmen

erika
erika

@doc942 Look, Hickey is a smart player....but too small.

Streit has heart....but not much talent.

Viz had it all...but can no longer take the rigors of an NHL season, never mind the playoffs!

......so, these 3 are good if we can get them at a bargain, otherwise...have to think about the kind of Dmen that can help us get deep into the playoffs.

islesguy80
islesguy80

He cant stop anyone. Passes the puck infront of the net constantly. How is any good? At BEST hes a 7th dman. AT BEST

doc942
doc942

@islesguy80 I saw defensemen on the Stanley Cup champ Blackhawks and runner up Lightening pass the puck in front of their own net.  Are they bad also?

Jeez man read the other comments on this site. How did having hickey and lubo fair for us this playoff? We did real good didnt we. Defense is the islanders best attribute right?
