Knicks host Chicago, visit Cleveland to start 2014-15 season

The Knicks will be squarely in the NBA spotlight as they enter the first full year of the Phil Jackson era during the league’s opening week.

The NBA confirmed Wednesday that  the Knicks will host Chicago Oct. 29 in their regular season opener as guard Derrick Rose returns to the Bulls. The next night, the Knicks travel to Cleveland for LeBron James’ return to Ohio.

The Knicks will make several marquee appearances throughout the season, their first under coach Derek Fisher. They’ll host Washington on Christmas Day — when James makes his return to Miami with the Cavs — and host New Orleans on Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 19). The Knicks will play Milwaukee on Jan. 15 in London as part of the NBA Global Games series and host the Los Angeles Lakers at 2 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1.

The complete 2014-15 Knicks regular season schedule can be found here.

Why analyze the schedule since we're only going to 35 or so of them.

The big decision for Phil and Fish will be who to play at the 4 and 5 spots. If Melo plays the three, we will probably be the worst playoff contender in the East at PF and C. So how do we overcome that deficit and  get some wins. That will pretty much determine the season. We are set at the 1 and 3 with Calderon and Melo, plus we have a wealth of 2 guards. Upfront it's just journeymen and injury risk bigs. As they go, so will the Knicks.

Great job by Stephen A. Smith on the Colin Kaepernick statement.  Outstanding.

New system n new culture will work wonders. We are getting players that fit this system n I am confident in Dfish n Phil that they will find a defensive scheme that helps our weaker defenders like Calderon.

Also shump is not untrade-able. If he is on the team, he needs to be used solely as a defensive stopper because he does not do anything else well. His camp seems to have a much different idea of what his game is.

I think shump will be traded because he will not accept the role as defensive stopper n the knicks do not want to commit money to him until they see what 2015 looks like. I feel like shump has not improved one bit on offense since he has been here and he actually regressed defensively last season.

Also next season, you will see our Greek freak with the big boys and could fill that role.

So yea, package shump with either bargs or amare.....

The Knicks need to get below the apron before both Stat and Barg come off the books in order to obtain two star players next season. This would entail trading one of the above along with JR Smith and Shump.

Millsap and Wes Matthews.

I still can't believe the Knicks missed the playoffs last year by one game when Atlanta's management was trying to lose for most of the season.

Making the playoffs isn't a given with an improved Cleveland and potentially improved Pistons team.  Hopefully the Knicks get off to a relatively fast start and can step off the gas a little at the end of the year.

The time to plays the Cavs will be early in the season before they have a chance to gel as a team, learn the new system and their rookie head coach figures out how he is going to distribute minutes.  Guess the same could be said for the Knicks but I'm happy the Knicks are getting the Cavs early.

Last season, the knicks ranked 25th in points per possession, 25th in touches per possession.  That should change with the new system and coach.

Also, Melo had a PER of 27.9 at PF compared to 23 at SF.   Is it so bad that he plays the PF position considering he performs much better, and consequently the Knicks collectively do as well...

There is some opposition to Melo playing PF.  I say until we get a bonafide PF he should play PF.

THE REASON FOR MELO WEIGHT LOSS:

A photo of Anthony this week on his Instagram showed what appeared to be a dramatic weight loss since the season ended. Anthony, who turned 30 on May 29, looks younger with the weight loss. “He wants to be as athletic as he was when he was a rookie,’’ the confidant told The Post. “Plus he wants to be a facilitator in the triangle and speed will help that.’’ New York Post

if I remember correctly...Melo still abused dudes in the post in his early days...he's just naturally strong..not "ripped" or "swo"...just strong.

@MeloStat301 seeing even younger melo and bron in the lenny cooke documentary is even crazier.  man, if lenny had just had the drive and focus as bron and melo... some say his game was smooth but rugged, like Lance Stephenson but better.

@Knicks_Fanatic We need to put a healthy Amare at PF backed up by Bargs.

At center, we should player Jason Smith backed up by Dalembert.

That will gives scoring at PF and good defense at center.

@Knicks_Fanatic ..Phil def need to try and get a SOLID SOLID PF or C ...and knicks will be set ........

....David West would be my Dream choice .

SheSaidSpikeWho

@Knicks_Fanatic I agree about our bigs. Injury prone or prone to laziness (Dalembert). It's sketchy to me.

@pointguard Easier said than done.

That said, pass on Matthews. JR's the better player and has a better contract.

JR's tremendously underrated in this place.

Milsap's a solid option, but waiting till Monroe next season could be a nice alternative (though I believe he's severely overrated here on the flip side).

How did the Pistons improve? I know that's the least important part of your post but that came from left field lol

@knick4life The first ten games of the season are always critical.  Start off slow, and play catch up.  Start off fast and build momentum.

Knicks_Fanatic

@Mel Brizzy

The Knicks have played their best with Melo at the 4. Woody got lots of wins with Melo and Chandler at the 4-5 spots. Whether or not we can find some stability at PF and C will probably determine our success.

knick4life
knick4life

@Mel Brizzy  Knicks have a lot of depth at PF this year.  Amare, Bargs and Jason Smith will all likely being splitting minutes there.  Let Melo play in space in the triangle and let's see if it doesn't improve his overall game (while also sparing that shoulder).

that3agoodpoint
that3agoodpoint

@MeloStat301  That's what I was thinking. He was not losing muscle but fat which is a very good thing and could absolutely result in him gaining an extra inch or two on his vertical and an extra split second of explosiveness.

I told you all there was strategery to this move.

SheSaidSpikeWho

Just read from Berman that Melo is doing yoga, three workouts a day, and no carbs. That's dedication.

Depends on who we are playing. Noah, Gortat, Jefferson, Lopez, Bosh, Hibbert, Drummond, and Horford all all going to give us trouble.

Agreed, trade guys when you can get the most for them. Not just trade them for the sake of doing a trade.

Good point about seeing what these guys can do with Dfish n Phil jax

@brookdon  The main area of improvement I see is in their new coach Stan Van Gundy who is a huge improvement over what preceded him.  He did a great job in both Miami and Orlando previously.

I also feel like they brought in much better role players, although they did overpay for some of them.  I don't think they are a top 6 team, but I do think they will challenge for the 7-8 seed in the East.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@brookdon Not too much improvement. They still have those 2 cancers in Jennings and Smith (arguably the SF/PF with the lowest bball IQ in the league while having a tier 1 overall talent).

They lost Stuckey and their putting their chips in Caldwell-Pope to step up.

Monroe's sticking around next to Drummond; Bynum and Jerbeko stuck around, and if I'm not mistaken, they brought in Meeks, Butler, and DJ Augustin.

Imo, they're just about the same, but their issues lies within their 2 best players. One doesn't wanna play his natural position. The other is a chucker who refuses to play team ball.

Coaching and man management will be what determines their season.

Mel Brizzy
Mel Brizzy

@knick4life @Mel Brizzy True, however, J smith, amare, bargs are injury prone.  if one of these guys can prove to be reliable then sure, but it dont negate the fact Melo is our best performer at the PF spot.

and i'm not one to blame his shoulder injury on him playing the PF position.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@that3agoodpoint @MeloStat301  Good call man...and of course I agree.  Its very important to lose fat..and not muscle on no carb diets.  Its simple really...strength training at least 3-5 rimes a week, maintains and spares your muscle from wasting away...the only thing about a Keto diet is...for prolong periods of time in a keto state...your body does burn fat as efficiently...and needs a spike in insulin..so a shot of carbs does wonders every 8-9 days....Melo looking lean though.

SheSaidSpikeWho
SheSaidSpikeWho

@stillmatic @SheSaidSpikeWho It could work but I can't see relying on Bargs and Amar'e remaining healthy. I hope so but their history speaks for itself. You think Fish will also play them at center? I remember hearing Phil say Amar'e works best at center.

VerySilentJay
VerySilentJay

@Mel Brizzy Imo, the wear and tear of trying to post up and defend guys that had 20-40 lbs on him definitely play a role. Doing this for 40+ minutes an entire season makes a difference.

At the same time look at the extra work he's had to put in the boards department because the rest of the team didn't pitch in. This takes its toll, no doubt.

knick4life
knick4life

@Mel Brizzy  Maybe the injury didn't happen because he was playing PF, but the wear and tear on the shoulder that would come from playing in the post going forward would be attributed to the PF position.

bblessed

I understand but this is the first season I can remember that stat is coming in healthy. I don't see Barg getting too many mins. If stat gives us 65 games again and barge gives is 50 games, we'll be fine.

Mel Brizzy
Mel Brizzy

@VerySilentJay @Mel Brizzy IMO, i think its overhyped and overstated.  I don't recall too many guys posting Melo up on a consistent basis.

We forget that Melo weighed approximately 230-235 lbs over the last several seasons.  Many of the PF's he's played against, minus a few exceptions, weighed about the same.

Melo is as strong as most of the competition he plays against.  Not to mention, Melo didn't conduct much of his offensive work in the post.

IMO, i think ppl are consumed with the notion that he gets banged bc he plays PF, on the flip-side i see it as just the opposite.

Knicks_Fanatic

@stillmatic

Bargnani has played less than STAT over the last three seasons. He has broken down mid season every year. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement endorsement. He went out in January with an expected 6-8 weeks for his elbow to heal and he never made it back.

That's all we'll need... Jason, Sam, and Cole can hold it down

The Knicks have had their best success with Reed/DeBusschere, Ewing/Oakley, and most recently Chandler/Melo at the 4/5 spots.

It's not rocket science.

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@BiggieTKB @Knicks_Fanatic

Bargnani spoke for the first time and said he doesn’t want to commit to a return date. An elbow surgeon interviewed by The Post said usually 3-to-6 weeks of therapy will do the trick.

Bargnani said his doctors are talking to him more cautiously but confirmed there’s no plans for surgery.

“I have no idea [on a return date],’’ Bargnani said. “It’s a ligament broke and you see how it heals and how strong the arm gets. You got to make sure it’s 100 percent. I really don’t know the timeline.’’

The elbow surgeon told The Post usually only baseball players and javelin throwers get the surgery — which could put him out one year.

Woodson said he knows Bargnani will not be playing in the next week. His season came to an abrupt halt after faking a shot, driving the lane and charging into two Sixers as he leapt for a dunk. The fall was dramatic and violent.

While Barnani stayed in, he knew soon after the game he might be out for a while. He had a similar right-elbow injury last season with Toronto that kept him out six weeks.

“It’s a similar injury to last year,’’ Bargnani said. “The feelings I had four, five hours after the game was pretty similar. I wasn’t surprised at all.’’

We went 72-34 after Woody took over, before going big and moving Melo back to the SF. Got to the second round of the playoffs against Indy and had a 92-91 lead in Game 6 on the road with about 5 minutes left. I'd settle for that again.

It was most Felton-Kidd-Brewer-Melo-Chandler and Felton-Prigioni-Shump-Melo-Chandler from what I recall with lots of JR.

Mel Brizzy
Mel Brizzy

@stillmatic @Knicks_Fanatic I'd say the 27.9 PER while at the PF spot during last years horrid season was the only positive.

Year 1 was definitely successful do to the tremendous leadership of Kidd, R.wallace, and kurt thomas.

Melo and the knicks have had tremendous success when he played the four.

Mel Brizzy
Mel Brizzy

@stillmatic we all choose team success.  but when you put it context of whether or not Melo playing the 4 spot is a good thing.  IMO, it doesn't hurt us.  It's helped more than hurt.

Year 2's failures were the result of a myriad of things.  What was not an issue was the fact melo played the 4.

Mel Brizzy
Mel Brizzy

@stillmatic Yep.  IMO, there were too many variables that interfered with the winning process.  Melo at the 4 was not one of those variables.

as i stated earlier, if we can find a legit 4 that can produce for us i am all for it.
