Knicks’ Lowry deal appears dead in the water

Adam Zagoria, Team Reporter

The Knicks chances of landing point guard Kyle Lowry in a deal with the Toronto Raptors seem dead in the water.

Frank Isola of the Daily News reported that Knicks owner Jim Dolan nixed the deal after initially wanting to make it happen.

“Dolan didn’t want to get fleeced again by [Raptors GM] Masai [Ujiri],” one Knicks source told Isola. “They had a deal ready.”

“There are two problems,” the source added. “Dolan didn’t like that someone from his group leaked it to the media, and the other problem is the Knicks seem to have too many (people) involved with making decisions.”

Multiple reports indicated the Knicks were talking about shipping Raymond Felton, Metta World Peace as well as Iman Shumpert, Tim Hardaway Jr. or the Knicks’ 2018 first-round pick to Toronto in exchange for Lowry. The Raptors, who have already dealt Rudy Gay to Sacramento, seem intent on tanking in an effort to score in the loaded 2014 NBA Draft, hoping they can bring Andrew Wiggins back home North of the border.

Asked if the Knicks were still in the mix for Lowry as of Friday morning, a league source told SNY.tv, “I can’t say they are.”

Asked if the Knicks simply didn’t have enough to offer compared with Brooklyn or other teams interested in Lowry, the source said, “Not enough to value the asset. I don’t blame Toronto.”

Dolan had to jump in last minute to nix a deal that would've sent MWP, Felton, Shump, THJ and a 1st to the Raptors for Lowry?

So either there are people within the organization who are actually dumb enough to consider pulling the trigger on this trade, or Dolan is trying to save face, knowing he has become the goat of the town and NBA, by taking credit for something fans would've ripped him and the organization apart for.  Either way, one blocked trade won't save his 13 year reputation of being a horrible owner.

The moment the "gypsy" asked for two of Shump,Thj,Pick, we should have hung up the phone.

I am really really bothered that we were ready to give up a 23 year old for a 27 year old PG with less than superstar skills and who can leave.

Here's the deal.  The Knicks have to make a trade at this point since the rumors came out and Dolan all but confirmed that they were true with him being upset that the details of the trade were leaked. The locker room will be ugly. Guys like Metta, Felton and even Shump will be pretty peeved after almost being traded. You can't even expect those guys to give good effort in tonight's game Aslo how stupid will the Knicks look when they badly need a PG with Felton hurt and  Lowry who is better than any PG we have on the roster goes to play backup in Brooklyn. The Nets will have 2 PG's superior to to any guard that the Knicks have now. Also they have been winning games recently. I'm pretty sure Melo will love to resign if we finish as a 8th seed or miss the playoffs all together. At least we will have a pick in 2018 to show. smh

If Steve Mills was going to gift wrap felton, shun and a #1 or THJr and DOH_Lan had to stop him then he has passed his "Moronic-GM" Certification test.

Congratulations Steve, you're a moron

OFF TOPIC:

Marc Stein@ESPNSteinLine 12m

RT @MarkMontieth: Had lengthy Q&A w/Larry Bird. Wants Granger to sit longer. "He's pretty rusty. I want him to be in shape b4 he goes out"

Translation: "Why don't you have a seat, not get hurt, while we think of a place to trade you to"

One of the problems that I see with the present team and record is all the 2015 talk. All that chatter and the signing of Chris Smith told the players that the Front Office is not serious about this year being "The Time is Now" year nor is next year. Face it, a large chunk of the roster has to look at this and realize that they aren't going to be a part of the 2015-16 season or beyond.

The is reminiscent of the Walsh/D'Antoni years of limping along for several years waiting for the summer of LBJ and other free agents to happen. The rosters knew they were just marking time and their effort and play often showed it.

Apparently, the whole focus of this season has now become two-fold: keep Melo here by letting him that he'll be paid the max in order to get him to accept another year of nothing for the 2014-15 season and to make the play-offs to avoid giving Denver a lottery pick. So, to my mind, the rest of this season is a quest for a mediocre record and 2014-15 might be a tanking season as the Knicks have a pick that they must use. Again, subconsciously, what is the motivation for the next season and a half?

OT

MELO SAYS TEAM RELYS ON HIM TOO MUCH LATE IN GAMES:

"I take my hat off to my teammates for believing in me in that situation, but they've got to know I believe in them, too," he said in regards to the predilection of Iso-Melo late in games.

He added that he believes in his teammates to "make something happen and then when it comes time for me to get something going, then I'll do it. But I believe in them as much as they believe me in me and they've got to know it.

"They've got to play ball down the stretch, too."

The belief from critics is that plays are only run for Carmelo Anthony, which is factually incorrect. In my recent pregame segment (Wednesday night) I showed one example: the final play of regulation against the Pacers. You can see it in the photo above.

That play had several options, including JR Smith on a cut, which, when you see the reply, was wide open for a layup. But Iman Shumpert hesitated on the pass and instead fed it to Melo, who was forced into a contested shot.

SAS going off on the Ray, MWP, Shum/Thjr, and a pick like we all.

I actually think the Knicks should give SAS a job, he's not that stupid actually.

ummm did we all forget Shump had another minor knee surgery this off season??????? so please lets not count him out this season. Besides no way I see the Knicks trading him for a player like Lowry unless if it was for Rondo.

All this Paul George talk is funny, listen just play him like the Heat played him, force him to shoot outside shots the entire game and protect the rim thats it. Remember we're talking about a player who is career 43% shooter! far worst then Melo. and Last season he shot right around 43%.

ill do felton, metta and shump but its not a great deal either way.

@L-Switch

If you think they're either not going to make playoffs with the current roster or be the 8th seed. How much of an improvement would lowry provide? I'd say little to none. He's better than what's on the team but he's not the magic  fix.

If Melo is really on the fence about staying they have to trade him. This is not a championship contending roster this year.

@L-SwitchI agree if they don't pull this off it's bad for moral.  I don't understand how something like this get leaked.  The worst thing you want your players to know is that they were expendable.

I don't see that trade being proposed. I keep reading it was Felton. MWP and either Shump, THJr, or 2018 pick. And Toronto preferred the pick.

@moneyball If the Shump haters on this blog had their way....well we'd be in the position we're in now, with draft picks being traded left and right and little in the way of  young talent to develop.

@zdiddy4nyk "NY fans have no patience..." So why are is so much of the fanbase against trading Shumpert, despite his lackluster play?  Aren't those fans' arguments "He needs time to develop", etc.?

@MeloStat301 Felton shouldn't be laughing off anything , dudes been a complete and utter SCUB this year .

...one part of me would not even mind the knicks getting fleeced if it meant getting rid of this baffoon .

@MeloStat301 Really, Melo has to save his body and energy for 2015-16 when it will matter again. Why get beat up when the next season and a half don't really seem to matter anymore?

@zdiddy4nyk Shump's confidence is shot and he is not being used correctly by the coach on top of that.  The coach should be telling him to go out there every night and shut down the other team's best perimeter player, and that his offense is completely irrelevant.

I don't think his confidence is shot from trade rumors...He's dealt with those his whole career.  He's just stuck in an offensive system that does not match him well (he needs either fast paced run and gun or spread the floor/spacing), with a coach that clearly does not support him.

While this doesn't absolve Shump of all the blame, the coach MUST do a better job of using him and expressing confidence in him.

I'd also like to see Shump get a legitimate shot to play pg, where he won't have to worry about scoring and can just get into a rhythm on defense and setting up the offense.

@thatsagoodpoint

Yeah wil the thrill, he's been the second coming for about 8 years now. He's just alright the same with those other bums. Shump is overrated, I constantly hear "he's a great defender". Then I see him getting blown by or committing stupid fouls all the time. Also his offensive game is trash.

THJr will be a better all around player. Shump for Lowry is a no brainer.

@orlando_knickfan The delusional arrogance of this team, at 6-15, is really incredible.  Ray actually thinks an outside team is interested in him.

@SportsMeccaNYC It seems like every season, the Knicks are waiting for someone to return, "Then we'll really be good" seems to be the tease. "Wait until Baron Davis comes back. Wait until STAT gets back. Wait until Chandler gets back." Now, it will be wait until Felton gets back. Wait until JR re-gains his form." Just a constant refrain in Knicks Land.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@SportsMeccaNYC@MeloStat301 Huh?

Did you even read the link?  There was a play run at the end of the pacer game, but shump was hesitant to pass the ball in the right spot, so he just gave it to melo.  It happens more often than not..

orlando_knickfan

I know, but that was one variation.  Bottom line is, SAS didn't want none of Shump/Thjr/or pick to go.

He said what I said, who was considering this in the first place.
