Kurt Rambis to join Knicks as assistant coach

July 7: Phil Jackson officially announced Kurt Rambis will join the team as associate head coach.

July 3: Rambis has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Knicks (Begley, July 3).

Rambis is the first assistant coach to join head coach Derek Fisher’s staff.

The Knicks have offered Kurt Rambis a four-year contract worth about $4.8 million to be Derek Fisher’s top assistant (NY Post, July 3).

He is currently an assistant coach for the Lakers, is in the mix for their head coaching job and was on Phil Jackson’s staff for both of his stints in Los Angeles.

Rambis, obviously, knows the triangle offense quite well.

The offer is close to the largest assistant’s contract in NBA history: four years and $6.4 million to Tyronn Lue from Cleveland.

have you seen rambis without glasses? looks very odd, he needs the rims or it's no go.  :)

holy crap this is a recycled thread. I knew something smelled bad

The real killer on making moves this year is the Bargnani deal. Toronto was able to shed all salary sending Novak to the Jazz for a second round pick and buying out Camby. That would have put us at around $70 million, triggering the full MLE.

What happened to Bill Cartwright?

Speaking on First Take, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith said the Knicks and Sixers have had conversations about a deal that would send Amare Stoudemire and Iman Shumpert to the Philadelphia. Although what the Sixers would send back isn't clear, it likely wouldn't be much more than a draft pick or non-guaranteed contract player, as the Knicks would do the deal to clear cap space. Why update this years old thread instead of making a new one?

Where is Lebron going? I think NY Fans are getting too comfortable with the idea that Melo is coming back to NY. We'll know when we know and I'll bet his choice is more difficult than we expect.

If Boston wanted to rid themselves of Jeff Green's contract to make a run at FA's next year, they have a nice amount of cap space.  Maybe we could swing Shump, Bargs, and Prig for Jeff Green.  That could potentially clear up enough cap for Gasol.  A lineup of Calderon, JR, Green, Melo, and Gasol would be very competitive in the east.  Just rambling on a bit of course.

If we move Amare (salary dump taking back say half his salary /Thad) can't we just offer Gasol a real contract (no MLE crap) ?

I think to realistically have a shot at Pau, we need to be able to offer him the full MLE.  Hopefully we can get rid of Bargs or Amare to create that space.

Can someone explain why Tyrone Lue is getting paid so much?  I had forgotten he was even an assistant coach.

Rambis was a 1980 draft pick of the Knicks who was waived before he donned a NY jock.

i'm sure we'll be hearing that nugget of history a lot.

So Rambis can be Fisher's Lawrence Frank?

@ Knicks_ Fanatic It was a bad trade undoubtedly.

I don't get it. Don't trades have to match salary?

@BiggieTKB  M,aybe he doesn't wanna run out west?  Lest of a chance to compete...Lebron looks "immortal" ion the east...out west he'd be with a handful of teams competing to come out.

@phenomenal Trading Amare we we are still over the cap so we'd have to get a matching salaries or combined salaries in return…I think?

@BiggieTKB By mid level contract, do you mean the full MLE or a decent contract?

barnaby87
barnaby87

@Marvel_ Depends on how much cap we realistically can clear.  Potentially though, yes

@Mel Brown If Jackson can somehow make JR and/or Barg's contract disappear he is definitely the man!

Just read an absurd article on probasketballtalk claiming we were still a " borderline" playoff team with Gasol and Anthony....what a joke, with those two we are immediatly the second best team in the east let alone a borderline playoff team

@BiggieTKB @barnaby87 It's all wishful thinking.  I think Green is very underrated though and even without Gasol, the first four in that lineup could be a force offensively.  Defense would be the factor to worry about.

@joepf keep in mind if kurt helin wrote it, it's the internet version of toilet paper. the guy is bill simmons on roids. despises the knicks, loves his lakers.

@BiggieTKB @Blaze NYK but the knicks are not. the team who is over has to match salaries not the team that is under.

barnaby87
barnaby87

@BiggieTKB @barnaby87 Don't see that happening, so we'd be banking on him maybe taking the mini MLE this year and then giving him a new contract next year.

@Mel Brown @Welpee  I'm thinking with Calderon, Hardaway as the shooters, Shump HOPEFULLY getting his game together and possibly Larkin doing some things, JR could be expendable.  Particularly since his one on one tendencies may not fit the new offense.

@Mel Brown @Welpee Requires more discipline than JR has ever displayed for extended periods of time.
