Knicks may be holding onto Woodson for the right reason

Harris Decker

An interesting theory regarding Mike Woodson surfaced the other day on Twitter. That theory went something like this:

Brian points to a theory that few in the media have discussed. In order to fully understand this theory, it’s important to look back at how we got here in the first place.

Mike Woodson, Amare StoudemireWhen Mike D’Antoni was fired in 2012, then assistant coach Mike Woodson took over in the middle of the season. Most people assumed that Woodson would fill the role until the end of the season, when Glen Grunwald would choose a new leader for the Knicks.

An unlikely run featuring Jeremy Lin and Carmelo Anthony led to Woodson being brought back to be the head coach of the New York Knicks. It seemed very clear that Woodson won his way into that job. If not for Lin, he likely would have been replaced before the 2013-13 season. Woodson then led the Knicks to their first playoff series victory in over 10 years.

Now, Steve Mills sits in a similar position. The Knicks are much worse right now than they were in 2012 under D’Antoni, but it’s possible that Mills is holding on to Woodson for a very good reason. If the Knicks were to fire Woodson,  it seems likely that assistant coach Herb Williams would take over for the remainder of the season.

While the Knicks would have low expectations for the rest of 2013-14, there’s always a chance for him to turn it around. That would leave Mills with a decesion that he’d rather not make this summer. By holding onto Woodson until the season ends, he has the ability to fire him and then bring in the coach of his (or James Dolan’s) choosing.

Over the past few years, it seems like the front office has made more bad decisions than good decisions, but if Brian is correct in his theory, not firing Mike Woodson makes a lot of sense right now for Mills, Dolan and the New York Knicks franchise.

Dirk has given notice to the NBA and media outlets that he expects to top Melo's 62 pts tonite!    I don't think he's getting any more than 42 pts myself.

Why do we have to be forced to listen to this Jason Collins crap all week?

Look, I don't have a problem with the man's sexual orientation and him being a pro athlete, but lets keep this in perspective. Martina Navritalova was one of the greatest female tennis players ever and had an alternative lifestyle. When Tiger Woods, Jack Johnson,Jackie Robinson broke their respective sporting/color barriers...they were great athletes and were heralded.

Jason Collins is only getting publicity becauseof his alternative lifestyle. Because lord knows, he's a scrub-a-dub-dub!

I've seen basketball players in the special olympics who were better than Jason Collins and didn't receive this much press!

Clippers are expected to make a strong push for Danny Granger once he's bought out by the 76ers.

Paul, Crawford, Granger, Griffin, and Jordan is a formidable starting 5 or closing 5 for that matter.

When Mike Scott, DeMarr Carroll, and Jeff Teague torch you for 82 points on 40 shots, you need more than a new coach.

Too bad there is that pesky rule where you have to extend your interim coach if he succeeds . . . oh wait.  Wish I could say I am surprised by the ineptitude.

The most frightening thing is the mind set of Woody. When you see statistics like the Knicks being last in free throw attempts or when Melo has 5 or more asts we win......how do you not adjust all yr?

I have another theory. The FO doesn't really know what they are doing.

Everyone keeps talkin about the knicks role players being bad but eye seriously beg to differ. I believe the reason our role players come off as horrible is based on Woodys bum system of ' shoot all game' and Melos handicap of non play making

@kneggyknik HERE IS WHAT THE ATLANTA FANS HAD TO DEAL WITH WHEN WOODY WAS COACH THERE ..www.firemikewoodson.blogspot.com

@xmenreturn

I was counting on 25 from Dirk on tonight's loss. If he's dropping 42, blowout is on the way.

@knickfan2

Jackie Robinson couldn't hide the fact he was black. Jason Collins didn't decide to become g-a-y last year. It is something he hid. That's the difference.

Granger won't start..... And def not at sm forward

The Sixers should hold onto Granger and retain his Bird rights to use in a sign and trade next year. They could get something back for him.

What adjustment do you suggest he make that would cause Shump to hit wide open threes or to have Felton not pull up from 20 feet whenever he has the ball?

@Kvdaone That's the million dollar question.  I think Mike Woodson smokes before every game.  Has no clue what is going on and who Toure Murry even is.

@OLDKNICK  ya gotta think about it.  I was raised to never be a "fair-weather fan". But that was when it was cheap to go to ballgames and I didn't have to pay for cable.  Now, rationally I think a. the players don't really care about where they play and us fans.  b. The owners are downright contemptuous  of us and want to charge INSANE prices to see their crap….so the logical thing would be to not be a FAN_A_TIC and just go to see the best show…(like broadway or something)

Too bad old habits die hard, and I would have to say most here are wasting  their valuable time is foolish (like me)

I tuned into hear what Mike Lupica had to say about the Knicks yesterday and all he said was.."forget them, they're trying to sell 2015, next!"

@OLDKNICK  make a lot of noise about how we feel in whatever way possible (legally).

@OLDKNICK  can't help but watch Knicks basketball. if you've been a Fan since the late 80s B.King Era up until now

we've seen the worst of times and the best of times

might as well root for players like THJR to continue to get better and maybe Melo drop a few more 50 pt + games

other than that whoever your alternate Team you see in the playoffs start getting familiar with them. lol

rgm891

@OLDKNICK Nothing Old Knick.  We are all grinding it out til the end.  Whoever on this blog besides Metro can root for another team like the nets were never really a Knicks fan.  The roller coaster ride continues my main man.

@thatsagoodpoint  No man, we have sunk. Time for a salvage job. Captain Woody should have gone down with the ship, but is passed it onto his players to save his azz, which is why you see the joggers and jump shooters out there, making sure they don`t get hurt

@kneggyknik Thx Buddy, They have Vince Carter. I forgot.

WE ARE WINNING TONITE FOLKS!  You can never go wrong betting against Vince Carter. He's my sure thing next to Biggie!

Yeah, I understand. And I guess that's my grievance. All of the athletes who broke barriers for being the "first" were actually good and are in the HOF. Collins is just not a good player. He should not be getting this type of coverage regardless of his sexual orientation.

@thatsagoodpoint @knickfan2  It's history and will make it easier for the next guy. Plus Collins seems to ve a good guy. He seems to "get it".

Nets do another positive even historic thing while Dolan wallows in hell.  Go Steve Mills!

@thatsagoodpoint @Knixtradamus  A giant mistake.  Even  Bobby Bushay would know that putting all ur eggs in one basket is a huge mistake.

@chudogz

Granger is a good defender and can shoot the 3 consistently. He is way better than Dudley or Barnes. He is everything the Clippers need at the 3 spot, to guard guys like Durant and LeBron.

It's a huge addiction to them if they do it.

@kefhrny17  They smelled blood and the Knicks Wussed out…They also seemed to be worn down from too many minutes (remember double overtime loss the previous night)

@kefhrny17 Yep, playing the Knicks is like raising the minimum wage.  Even low end earners now prospers!

@brookdon Make Felton take the pick rather than try to create. Make Shump n JR slash more instead of trying to be Melo. Make Tyson post up instead of always looking for the alley. Overall bottom line.....go to the hole

@brookdon  bench the worst rated PG in the NBA?  Tough decision I guess

@thatsagoodpoint Come on brotha. You've got to watch every Knicks game to toughen ya up.

Years of watching the Mets, Jets and Knicks, I can watch a massacre and keep a perspective.

Like some of our dads would say, "Eat up boy, it'll put hair on your chest!" lol

@knickfan2  This makes it even better. He's a minor player being accepted for what he is.

When he came out last year I wondered if ANY TEAM would ever sign him one did. Give kudos to them.  Also they now have one tall team.  Lopez, Blatche, Plumlee, Collins, Garnett, and Plumlee is GOOD. He's be the 2nd best player on the Knicks…Why you KEEP draft picks.

Back to Collins..good for him and sports to evolve with society.

rico
rico

@Kvdaone @brookdon  Shump is heart he's only slashing to the rolling paper store, not to mention he tried to drive to the hoop and tweaked his knee. He'll know better than to try that for another year.  Much safer Klaning 3's and complaining that he's not a shooting guard.

JR…since he broke his face has been more tentative taking the ball inside and you can't blame him

Tyson…if it's not a lob-dunk he's got the offensive game of Jarrod Jeffries (who the knicks could use right now to defend the perimeter)

Chris
Chris

@BA @brookdon  Requires some thought, the ability to read and interpret the stat sheet, (I won`t even go into analytics) , and that is beyond DAWs scope

that makes waaay too much sense. if that were true there would be NO postings on this board.

@thatsagoodpoint True. That's why I offered the Nets to 2015 where you can transition back to our Knicks and get your ring.

@thatsagoodpoint  We can offer you the Nets for now until 2015 so you won't have to go cold turkey.

Being a Knicks Fan, is hard work dude.  You'll have to gravel and lose some of that my way or the highway talk. Our Knicks play on a dirt road!  None of that pavement crap!

xmenreturn

@thatsagoodpoint Well, there's your problem you have a bad baseline!  You must read the small print to be a Knicks fan!

Do not take any baseline from teams like the Yanks, Giants and etc.

To form your baseline, start with teams like the Cubs, Knicks, Wiz because nobody beats the Wiz!
