Knicks may be holding onto Woodson for the right reason

Harris Decker

An interesting theory regarding Mike Woodson surfaced the other day on Twitter. That theory went something like this:

Brian points to a theory that few in the media have discussed. In order to fully understand this theory, it’s important to look back at how we got here in the first place.

Mike Woodson, Amare StoudemireWhen Mike D’Antoni was fired in 2012, then assistant coach Mike Woodson took over in the middle of the season. Most people assumed that Woodson would fill the role until the end of the season, when Glen Grunwald would choose a new leader for the Knicks.

An unlikely run featuring Jeremy Lin and Carmelo Anthony led to Woodson being brought back to be the head coach of the New York Knicks. It seemed very clear that Woodson won his way into that job. If not for Lin, he likely would have been replaced before the 2013-13 season. Woodson then led the Knicks to their first playoff series victory in over 10 years.

Now, Steve Mills sits in a similar position. The Knicks are much worse right now than they were in 2012 under D’Antoni, but it’s possible that Mills is holding on to Woodson for a very good reason. If the Knicks were to fire Woodson,  it seems likely that assistant coach Herb Williams would take over for the remainder of the season.

While the Knicks would have low expectations for the rest of 2013-14, there’s always a chance for him to turn it around. That would leave Mills with a decesion that he’d rather not make this summer. By holding onto Woodson until the season ends, he has the ability to fire him and then bring in the coach of his (or James Dolan’s) choosing.

Over the past few years, it seems like the front office has made more bad decisions than good decisions, but if Brian is correct in his theory, not firing Mike Woodson makes a lot of sense right now for Mills, Dolan and the New York Knicks franchise.

I guess he'll be going to Hong Kong Gardens after the games in Brooklyn.

Good for him, hope he paves the way for others and helps spread hockey into new areas of the world.

@primus I hope he scores the Cup winner for the Islanders some day.

Mayfield and/or Pulock are already part of the org and will prob make the team at some point next yr.  As for the top LW, we're ok with scoring, we need more D.  Like Bailey or not he really helped the 1st line with that.  Biggest need hands down is a good goalie option after Halak.

As opposed to "he must suck" because Snow drafted him right?

If hickry and strait are on this team , we are going to have issues again with goals against

@camb33 Snow has had a job to do since his inception, along with all the Wang nonsense. No other GM in this league has that kind of tenure, without an agenda from ownership.

@camb33 - If the LW on the first line is not addressed, along with a "descent" back up to Halak, and shoes to fill on Hickey/Strait back end, this roster will struggle. The Isles will not be a surprise start anymore, that was LAST year. The season starts with a healthy dose of western teams...

Only been 9 years Camb, we must be patient....

Yup 9 years, in that time you would think maybe a playoff series win or two, or A cup, can you imagine..... But some sit here and says snows doing a great job, he's making draft picks, it's what gm's do.... It's always wait and see with this team.... JT ain't gett any younger either

@bammer26 Frankly, if I'm a Rag player, I don't want any AnDong  chasing me around the ice!

@willymayshays- I am no GM, but would plug in Pulock and Mayfield with no problem. Mayhem looked very poised and took the body well in his short stint during a tough call up.

Gotta move on with Hickey and Strait.

Second man in net behind Halak is also huge, agreed. If you read me, I am not a #12 fan...

come on garth draft us a goalie in the 6th or 7th round!

rmbbanned2

@Joey Ferguson

Joey-

Lehner was moved for a first rd pick- he is 4 years away from UFA status.

Talbot went for what was almost the last pick in the second rd- he is one year away from free agency.

Lack went for less- he is one year away from UFA status..

Jones was part of the Hamilton deal..

A player and his contract status are very, very important in determining what he is worth come trade time..

ok and. all im saying is i think snow needs to draft a goalie. 2 forwards 4 defensemen in this draft. one goalie in the last round. who knows how it will turn out. was lundqvist a 7th round pick?

@rmbbanned2 @Joey Ferguson

the other day, I said maybe Snow trades Reinhart for prospects or a young goalie... (Maybe PK's bro Malcom)  And you went on a whole long spiel about eberle and cap figures...??????

@kneggyknik HERE IS WHAT THE ATLANTA FANS HAD TO DEAL WITH WHEN WOODY WAS COACH THERE ..www.firemikewoodson.blogspot.com

Dirk has given notice to the NBA and media outlets that he expects to top Melo's 62 pts tonite!    I don't think he's getting any more than 42 pts myself.

@xmenreturn

I was counting on 25 from Dirk on tonight's loss. If he's dropping 42, blowout is on the way.

@kneggyknik Thx Buddy, They have Vince Carter. I forgot.

WE ARE WINNING TONITE FOLKS!  You can never go wrong betting against Vince Carter. He's my sure thing next to Biggie!

@thatsagoodpoint @knickfan2  It's history and will make it easier for the next guy. Plus Collins seems to ve a good guy. He seems to "get it".

Nets do another positive even historic thing while Dolan wallows in hell.  Go Steve Mills!

@knickfan2

Jackie Robinson couldn't hide the fact he was black. Jason Collins didn't decide to become g-a-y last year. It is something he hid. That's the difference.

@knickfan2  This makes it even better. He's a minor player being accepted for what he is.

When he came out last year I wondered if ANY TEAM would ever sign him one did. Give kudos to them.  Also they now have one tall team.  Lopez, Blatche, Plumlee, Collins, Garnett, and Plumlee is GOOD. He's be the 2nd best player on the Knicks…Why you KEEP draft picks.

Back to Collins..good for him and sports to evolve with society.

@thatsagoodpoint @Knixtradamus  A giant mistake.  Even  Bobby Bushay would know that putting all ur eggs in one basket is a huge mistake.

The Sixers should hold onto Granger and retain his Bird rights to use in a sign and trade next year. They could get something back for him.

Granger won't start..... And def not at sm forward

Sandro
Sandro

@chudogz

Granger is a good defender and can shoot the 3 consistently. He is way better than Dudley or Barnes. He is everything the Clippers need at the 3 spot, to guard guys like Durant and LeBron.

It's a huge addiction to them if they do it.

When Mike Scott, DeMarr Carroll, and Jeff Teague torch you for 82 points on 40 shots, you need more than a new coach.

@kefhrny17 Yep, playing the Knicks is like raising the minimum wage.  Even low end earners now prospers!

@kefhrny17  They smelled blood and the Knicks Wussed out…They also seemed to be worn down from too many minutes (remember double overtime loss the previous night)

Too bad there is that pesky rule where you have to extend your interim coach if he succeeds . . . oh wait.  Wish I could say I am surprised by the ineptitude.

Kvdaone

The most frightening thing is the mind set of Woody. When you see statistics like the Knicks being last in free throw attempts or when Melo has 5 or more asts we win......how do you not adjust all yr?

BA
BA

@brookdon  bench the worst rated PG in the NBA?  Tough decision I guess

brookdon
brookdon

What adjustment do you suggest he make that would cause Shump to hit wide open threes or to have Felton not pull up from 20 feet whenever he has the ball?

rgm891
rgm891

@Kvdaone That's the million dollar question.  I think Mike Woodson smokes before every game.  Has no clue what is going on and who Toure Murry even is.

Chris
Chris

@Kvdaone  Ahh, because he is dumb? Thus the moniker DAW

Kvdaone
Kvdaone

@brookdon Make Felton take the pick rather than try to create. Make Shump n JR slash more instead of trying to be Melo. Make Tyson post up instead of always looking for the alley. Overall bottom line.....go to the hole

Chris
Chris

@BA @brookdon  Requires some thought, the ability to read and interpret the stat sheet, (I won`t even go into analytics) , and that is beyond DAWs scope

rico
rico

@Kvdaone @brookdon  Shump is heart he's only slashing to the rolling paper store, not to mention he tried to drive to the hoop and tweaked his knee. He'll know better than to try that for another year.  Much safer Klaning 3's and complaining that he's not a shooting guard.

JR…since he broke his face has been more tentative taking the ball inside and you can't blame him

Tyson…if it's not a lob-dunk he's got the offensive game of Jarrod Jeffries (who the knicks could use right now to defend the perimeter)
