Knicks running short on options off the bench

Harris Decker

Carmelo Anthony, Tyson ChandlerThe losing is now spreading like an epidemic. With the Knicks currently in the midst of another bad losing streak, they are trying to compete with a deck of cards that is only half full. While the strength of their team in years past has been the bench, this year it is letting them down on an epic scale.

Despite his off the court issues this year, J.R. Smith has been good off the bench of late. In each of his last 5 games, Smith has scored 10 or more points while shooting for a very high percentage. The rest of the bench has been extremely inconsistent. Tim Hardaway Jr. has had some great games and some real duds and Amare Stoudemire has looked great when he’s been healthy.

Health is what has let the Knicks bench down. During last nights game against the 76ers, Cole Aldrich, Beno Udrih, Kenyon Martin, Amare Stoudemire, Metta World Peace and Toure Murry all sat out for various reasons while Jeremy Tyler saw very limited action off the bench.

Teams don’t always use their entire bench. For instance, the 76ers only used 5 guys off their bench on Wednesday while the Knicks used 4. But the options are what’s missing for Mike Woodson. He simply doesn’t have the bodies available to matchup with teams during grueling NBA games.

What that means is that Carmelo Anthony is seeing a huge minutes load. He continues to lead the league in minutes per game, tallying another 40+ last night. In the long run, we know that this is going to take a toll on Anthony.

You can’t blame a 15-27 on health. There are so many factors involved in the Knicks horrendous season. When the team has been healthy, they’ve had their moments. Stoudemire was great off the bench and even Toure Murry was starting to come around. Now the Knicks are back to square one, playing with half a roster and up against the Lakers, Cavaliers and Heat in the next few weeks.

Got to make some bold moves before the trade deadline and definitely before next season. First Move admit that we are rebuilding. Not injury ridden,or snake bitten, just NOT good enough. We have to get younger and we have to build around Carmelo. Right now IMO we should be talking to Houston about Omer Asik, Terrence Jones and Aaron Brooks for Tyson Chandler and Kenyon Martin. We get a starting center who is well rounded and has great upside,we get Brooks to push or replace Felton, and Jones is one of those one and done kids from Kentucky who just might become a really good player. Houston gets Chandler to back up Howard and provide leadership and Kmart brings toughness and another big body. Houston in "Win now" mode just might be tempted to reunite Chandler and Lin on their second unit. They would be very much improved.

Knick Starters: Asik,Jones(until Bargs gets back) Melo, Brooks/Felton,and Shump. Amare/Tyler/Aldrich/Prigioni/Smith and THj can fill out the rotation. this would be a great deal for both teams.
If a trade can't be made before the deadline. Someone should come down from the suites and tell Mike Woodson

"Let... the.. youngsters..play.. let them have minutes. All Knick teams have had blue collar role players. Guys that busted their asses and balled! Mason,Jefferies,Xman, Oak!  Jeremy Tyler can be an effective role player. Some people think this kid can be special, let him learn on the court. Cole Aldrich has no possible upside!? How do we know? Give Him real minutes. BTW I'd dump Beno ASAP and get Toure Murray into the rotation. Forget  minutes give thses kids games..give them the rest of the season,Championships and playoff runs are delusions right now.Throw the kids in the fire and coach them up. Lets grow some Knicks. Damnit!

I could live with that for the rest of the season...... Melo just letting it flow, everybody just relaxed ,"Playing the game of Basketball" getting better, staying healthy growing. Carmelo is here to stay He's Bernard....Patrick our great Knick that never gets the help he needs to get that ring . Melo has the power to shape things in ways they didn't. He can tell James Dolan "Lets see what the Kids have",..."Save our draft choices",......"I don't want more than two players on the team that are older than I am.","Let's build something." Let Amare and Bargnani play out their contracts . Their play can set their value

I see Carmelo as the elder statesmen on a championship Knick team down the road but the building must start now. A young cast of competent players, along with the growth and maturity of Shump,JR will be attractive to free agents over the next three seasons and having our draft choices will just be Good Business!

Go Knicks!!

On Nov. 21, 2008, then Knicks president Donnie Walsh, with the team off to a 6-5 start, dumped the long-term contracts of his two best players, Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford, in two separate blockbuster trades.

It started a dizzying series of deals designed to go as far under the salary cap as possible in order to sign two superstars.

Instead of James and Bosh, the Knicks signed Amar’e Stoudemire the following summer to an uninsured five-year, $100 million contract and seven months later traded the farm for Carmelo Anthony.

Five years later, after 82 players have graced the 15-man roster since that 2008-09 season, the Knicks are 3-8 and in danger of spending this season battling for the seventh or eighth playoff seed. They don’t even hold a potential lottery pick for the superior draft awaiting this summer if they crash.

The problem here is that this team was built to go two years and then rebuild in 2015. You can't rid yourself of many of the contracts because they have a year or more left. No one is taking Bargnani, STAT, JR, or Felton. You can trade Chandler, but if you think the defense is bad now, you might be sorry to see what happens without him.

So there is little to be done of consequence and Mills was brought in to sign free agents in 2015.

We need Chandler and Felton to sit out a few games so we can put together a little winning streak again.

Some of SAS's words of wisdom:

- He is hearing that this is Woody's last season.

- The management wants JVG

- But why would JVG come to the Knicks?

- Locker room complains about Melo (Ball stopper)

- But Nobody else steps up leaving Melo no choice

- Team is losing more when Chandler is playing

- You can't have your star players complain about the coach and not fire him

- JVG has great personality and fits NYC

go figure

Now im hearing chandler shouldn't be on this team? Lol

The problem is the coach.

Does anyone doubt that Kmart is better for this team than Tyson?

Seth Nadler

We all want Woody fired, but it's not going to happen, first the knicks are not losing money, still selling out every game, and even though it's wrong, the ownership doesn't think there is anyone better, plus I do believe this ownership realizes that it's going to be real bad for the next year and a half, so why pay a lot of money to coach for a bad team

Knicks didn't have the right asset mix anyway, but Celts apparently offered Rondo an extension with "star money" (according to a Boston sports radio show)

But Knicks running short on options indeed...

Dear Coach Woodson

As your future as Knicks Head Coach is in Jeopardy i think you came in with a sense of urgency and accountability when the D'antoni regime shipped out

since then everyone figured out your schemes and plots

either you change your coaching staff by Allstar Break

or resign...but while us Fans for life have to endure another failed Season of misfortune and ridicule here's my take on...

How to Fix The Knicks -

Make everyone Attack The Rim

Draw Fouls

Get Bruised Up

who cares if you get blocked

keep attacking until the other team gets exposed

cause as of now the Knicks are primarily a Jump Shooting Team

with 2 players that can create for themselves

if you notice Stat always went in on defenses which finds faults

with stat out we need someone just going in on defenses

Bargnani actually does it and no one is following him

Melo sometimes drives when his Jumper is off

MORE DRIVING THE BASKET

Hell Everyone should drive until they get a Offensive Foul then the next person Drives

Keep Penetrating constantly

3 point shot should be second option not always the 1st

Then on Defense do not Switch constantly

if you recognize a play coming call out the proper strategy

talk to one another

Losing just makes people quiet and loners then that just gives negative energy which then makes other teams come in and embarrass you and disrespect you at home.

Sincerely , Eddy Curry

Blow this entire F-ing thing up. Melo can score, but he's not a leader, he's not a big enough force on the defensive end, and hasn't proven to be clutch since he's been here. I've defended Melo for too long and I'm tired of it. Last night seeing his sinister smirk after getting a huge technical foul at the end of the game is a joke. This team's a joke. It's time to stop grasping at straws. The core of this team is old and only getting older. It's time to do this the right way and stop trying to bring in the next big thing and surround him with pieces that don't fit.

How to fix NYK

FIRE WOODSON

TRADE JR SMITH FELTON CHANDLER TO HOUSTON FOR JEREMY LIN OMAR CASSPI AND A FIRST ROUND DRAFT CHOICE

MOVE BARG TO CENTER START MELO AND CASSPI LIN AT PG TYLERAT BACKUP CENTER

Clyde Frazier should coach the Knicks not only would they be Dishing and Swishing and Poasting and Toasting they'll be Styling and Profiling.

Chandler out everyone complains we need him back. Now that he's back he's the problem. While money speaks, but this is why more and more players are avoiding NY

@madskills it's not chandler, he|| it's not even felton -- it's the way mw doesn't teach and the way he utilizes his players. every players game has gotten worse under mw. THAT'S CRAZY! guys are supposed to get better!

knickgirl35
knickgirl35

@madskills melo is not going anywhere. he will not leave 30milliom on the table. would you?

madskills

@lobcity The problem starts with the coach but he's definitely not the only problem. We have a backup pg playing heavy minutes as a starter. we have bigs that are either always injured or don't play big. We have sg's who are all streak shooters. By now its obvious that the roster is flawed. There are a lot of other people I would point the finger at before Chandler lol.

Ryan Flanagan
Ryan Flanagan

@KnickelusKnickleby While its insane to think Woodson would resign - would you resign from a job that pays millions? - I agree with most of what you said.

I do agree with attacking the rim - every great player does it and the Knicks never do. JR was so effective last year because he took it to the room all the time. Now he bombs hideous shots from 30 feet along with a cast of others. There's no paint presence offensively on this team and its a disaster. You need to be able to drive to the rim and get to the foul line to win games and the Knicks routinely don't do it.

@David LevineI would opt to let Melo leave, STATS contract to expire or get something good for him in his last year.  We need to go with a youth movement and a 4 year plan or so.  NYC will surely be patient for a team with a plan and young players that plays hard.

Seth Nadler
Seth Nadler

@David LevineWoody isn't getting fired, and why would Houston make that trade when they already have Howard and Asik, plus not sure it even works under the cap..by putting it all in caps isn't going to make it happen sooner

ENGLBERT_HUMPERDINK

@KnickelusKnickleby Clyde will never coach. He said that about 25 or so years ago... He hates it and says kids dont listen and he doesnt have the time. He would rather do something else

madskills

@Tomas @madskills I agree that most of it is Woodson. But it's not Woodson out there throwing ridiculous passes, throwing up air balls, committing silly fouls, playing around with other players shoe laces. Woodson's job is to put his team in the best position to succeed which he hasn't done imo therefore he should be let go. That being said, most of the players haven't exactly put themselves in position to succeed either it seems.

@Kiyan Carter Maybe they would go small and play Melo at the PF. The deal would be centered around Melo signing an extension. If Melo is looking to win right now his chances may be better out there I think. The Knicks would benefit also as they're adding multiple young pieces to help with the rebuild. I would like to see Melo stay and other stars join him but that's another season and a half away. LA is not leaving Portland, Rondo or Kevin Love may eventually come but even then we would need more pieces.

KnickelusKnickleby
KnickelusKnickleby

@Ryan Flanagan yeah like are they scared of the paint? chandler be posting up and no one passes to him lol

its like let him try to beast down low before the defense settle in.

i mean we have talent but they're all timid

@Kiyan Carter If Melo is staying then you have to go with JVG I think. SVG is known for clashing with his star players because of his approach.

@Kiyan Carter SVG was openly questioned by his star players. (Shaq, Dwight) I take JVG.
