Knicks way behind in Gasol pursuit

The Knicks have not been eliminated in their pursuit of Pau Gasol, but they trail three, maybe four, teams.

New York is behind Chicago, Oklahoma City, Lakers and Spurs, according to reporter Ken Berger (CBS, July 8).

Carmelo Anthony is still on his own free agency tour, but he asked for fellow free agent Gasol’s phone number with the intention of recruiting him to the Knicks (Wojnarowski, July 3).

“If the Lakers get Carmelo, Pau will stay,” said a person familiar with Gasol’s thinking (Los Angeles Times, July 3).

Sam Spiegelman

I think this Gasol deal is conditional. Based on the reports, Gasol is very much tuned in to whatever Carmelo Anthony decides. All indicators are Gasol could stay in Los Angeles if ‘Melo chooses the Lakers, but would also consider New York, given Anthony’s presence and the familiarity factor with Phil Jackson.

One wildcard I see in this situation is the Spurs. The defending champs can offer a chance to be a parting a NBA championship contender, giving Gasol another ring or two before he contemplates retirement.  I also would not rule out Miami if LeBron returns and Chris Bosh joins the Rockets.

This whole waiting game BS is another reason the 'team up' thing is super Rudy G*y...

Everyone waiting for everyone else to have a set of stones to say what theyre going to do because "I wanna play with so and so..."

Sounds like a schoolyard lunchtime full court game.

My sources tell me that next season LeBron is going to play 20 games with the Knicks, 20 games with the Heat, 20 games with the Cavs, 10 with the Suns, 12 with the Lakers and the playoffs with the Heat.

LeBron has grown men turning into groupies right now.

What's the Hornets situation right now cap wise? No more McCroberts. Why wouldn't they want to rent STAT? It would be a big name and improvement for them.

If some of you don't see what Melo is trying to do, I can't help you.  He's looking for the cleanest out possible and is using the spectacle of Lebron to get it. He also knows that he cannot logically swing LA as an alternative and PJ won't dance with Chicago on a S&T.  So to leave for crippled LA, using Lebron is his only option.

Melo says he wants to win but there are other ways to win that do NOT include the name Lebron James.  However, that is the only name he is floating that he wants to play with in NY.  So when Phil ultimately fails in getting Lebron, Melo can say all the usual crap about roster, chance to win, yada yada,

Actually he's kinda smart but is showing himself to be ultra weak.

@knickfan2 I often got the same response so I stopped mentioning his name.  Taking the rebounding load off Melo's shoulders alone would be worthwhile.  Love is also a pretty good floor spacer and can play in the post and finish.  I understand he isn't an good defender but there are guys out there with Kmart like skill sets that can protect the rim even if they aren't elite rebounders.  I think you pair those two up with a skinny guy that can block shots and you should do just fine.  Add in a strong wing defender and I'd take my chances.

McBob is a nice pickup for Miami if Lebron stays.

Why does Love get knocked so much. All he does is put up 25 and 15 every night. He's solid night after night, and he's young.

@orlando_knickfan

Ok so youre saying hes goin to LA if he doesn't get Bron on the Knicks? Thats like shooting himself in the face to do a little cosmetic surgery.... makes no sense at all. Lakers don't even have a coach and hes trying to leverage himself away from the guy who coached said team to its last championship? If that's his play hes welcome to it, but don't call it smart.

Who is floating? Him?, or some story in the NY post? Lol...its snowing in NY right now....

@JesusBlasTheKnickWay Bro but we cant receive a player via Sign and Trade unless we get under that Apron...aka TRADE STAT

for this to realistically happen the Knicks would have to ship Amare and shumpert to Philadelphia then find another under the cap team to take thjr an Bagnani this way we could free up 40 million to sign melo an LeBron. Maybe even find a team to take Larkin and Dalembert's money too....just saying..

Plus he's due for a major injury. Counting on Amare is not good planning.

Please. STAT can still entertain a crowd, especially running the P&R with Kemba and MKG. And it would only be for the remainder of his contract. What other FA are going to go there willingly?
