Knicks won’t make qualifying offer to Toure’ Murry, now a UFA

The Knicks will not make a qualifying offer to Toure’ Murry (Stein, June 30).

New York has also relinquished his restricted free agent status, the report said.

Murry averaged 2.7 points, 1.0 assist and 0.9 rebounds in 7.3 minutes per game in 2013-14. He appeared in 51 games for the Knicks, all off the bench.

The Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls and Golden State Warriors are all interested in Murry (Begley, May 27).

>> How important is it for Knicks to keep Toure’ Murry?

Keith Schlosser, Lead Writer

According to Stein, the Knicks are said to still be interested in retaining Murry’s services. Relinquishing his restricted status ensures New York has no guaranteed ties to the guard moving forward. While the move may be not personal, it certainly frees Phil Jackson up from another contract.

He’s made it known that there will be changes ahead. The team is looking for a fresh start.

Perhaps Murry will be a part of such a movement, but first, the Knicks need to see where the other chips happen to fall. It’s smart to prioritize and take care of the more pressing matters (i.e. Carmelo Anthony and other players who may demand more lucrative contracts) first.

After such things are taken care of, it’s safe to assume that Murry will still stand tall as a worthwhile option for players in his price range at the position. As a taller guard with decent court vision, the Witchita State product is a solid candidate to play in the triangle offense. He can also slash his way to the basket, and has steady instincts on the defensive end, too.

Should New York still end up giving Murry a call, it’d be interesting to see if such an attempt will be too little, too late. As a young gun with interesting potential, he’ll have his fair share of suitors.

Phil will make a move early before anyone. He needs to make a splash.

Reasons to be optimistic:

Signs still point to Melo’s free-agency tour being round-trip

".....according to two sources, Anthony’s wife, La La Vasquez, is very happy in New York and is opposed to Melo leaving the Knicks."

“There’s reason to believe he’s staying,’’ said one individual with ties to Anthony’s inner circle. “There’s just too much money out there. He’s doing to the right things, though. He’s got to make the rounds.’’

Don't underestimate the importance of family stability.

Most NBA players play for the money. Only a handful of them really care about winning a championship. At least we had one of those guys in Melo and some fans just want to give him away for peanuts. I really hope he doesn't leave us in mediocrity and make it much harder for Phil or anybody else to renew this team.

Teams will not wait until 2015 to lose their players. They will either lock them up or trade them. Knicks will be foolish to wait. We have expirings and young assets to deal. The time to improve this team is now.

Knicks still viewed in league circles as the favorites in Melo sweepstakes. But he will hear compelling pitches over next three days.

That's because Love is under contract and must be part of a trade. Melo and LeBron are available to be signed without losing any assets.

@knicksgirl35  Let's not kid ourselves though, Melo's plenty interested in the money also.  That will be the reason he'll ultimately stay with the Knicks.  Perhaps not for the max, but pretty close to it.

Should be a very interesting summer.

Quite frankly if he bolts we still can develop a decent roster in 2015...giving him a 5 year max contract without first having him get that surgical procedure to remove the embedded super glue on his hands will probably hurt the Knicks going forward.  MELO is all about me, me, me and mor me...there is no team in "MELO".

@NoVaCaInE  There is improving the team now, and then there is losing all your future financial flexibility by marrying B list players.

Personally, I agree that next year's FA class is shaping up to be total crap.  But that doesn't mean I want to trade all our expirings for long-term contracts.  Who do you think we can get for an expiring?  Only players someone wants to get rid of, i.e. overpriced B-list or worse. Our last 20 years is what that looks like.

I want to win now as much as anyone, but I want to win a championship, not 50 games, and without A-list FA signings, that's not possible.  So we have to be patient.  Develop young players and keep space free for whenever A-list FAs might be available again.

Hopefully we can keep Melo, but because of how the class of 2015 is shaping up I think he's gone.

I'm sure Phil wants to improve the team right now, but he might not be able to.

@NoVaCaInE Phil knows that. A few folks on here think they are smarter than our Prez. They want to wait until 2020 or something. Wow.

@MeloStat301  Phil might want to keep him, but it doesn't mean he can.  The way 2015 is turning out, selling ourselves to Melo is getting much harder.

Luol Deng seems destined for Dallas IMO. Definitely a Carlisle type of player.

MeloStat301

@Knicks_Fanatic  He is under contract but...rockets bulls warriors would have to move assets to sign LeBron or melo, only team that can sign one of them out right are the suns.  Regardless if its S&T...or moving contracts around to free cap space...they can not be signed outright.  Weather Love is under contract or not, is irrelevant to the situation...wolves are looking to deal him, and contract have to be moved anyway for bulls, rockets, warriors to make space.

@1harris1 I agree about money being important to Melo, but no one can dispute his love for the game and desire to win. Last season was the epitome of both of the latter. He played his a$$ off EVERY game he played... unlike the majority of the team.

You're being a parrot and you can't back up your assertion that melo is a me player.

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@johneco @NoVaCaInE I would love to pair Melo with another star. I don't think it's necessary though. We just need high IQ players. We added one in Calderon at the PG position.

I would love to get Pau Gasol. He's no longer a Star, but he's a perfect complementary player to someone like Melo and he can still play. He doesn't need the ball in his hands all the time. He's an outstanding passer. High character and good locker room presence. He knows the system. He could work with Fisher getting the team on the same page. IMO, the Knicks need a player who knows the Triangle on this roster other than Lamar Odom. That will make the transition easier.

Also, I didn't say the Knicks need to move every one of their assets. They do however need to use some to improve this team. Some of you guys need to stop thinking negatively. Phil is in control, not Dolan. I don't see him putting us in the same position, lacking flexibility, like years past. He just proved that with the recent trade. Even if the Knicks max Melo, we still have flexibility going forward. If you read my posts, you'd know I'm in favor of the Knicks gaining and maintaining flexibility.

knicksgirl35
knicksgirl35

@johneco We now have 2 coaches (Phil and Derek) and we will get 4 more qualified assistants. Whoever they choose to put on our team will be learning from them and they will play better ---- no matter who they are. Remember, we don't have Dtoni or Baldy anymore not teaching at all or showing the players trash making their skills worse. We have Phil and his crew. It is a new day. The thing is we will need Melo to win a championship. imo

1harris1
1harris1

@Art Perez @1harris1  No doubt the guy plays hard; but in the end, money talks.  That's why I've been saying continuously from last season that he's staying.  If push comes to shove, Dolan will give him a max deal (he knows it, and so does his agent).  Let's see him walk away from that to go win a championship with LeBron or the Bulls ((I'll believe it when it happens).

@theking @JesusBlasTheKnickWay  I find it amusing that you guys state as absolute fact some rumors thrown out by media hacks based on unnamed sources and your own conjectures.
