LeBron James exercises early termination option, becomes free agent

LeBron James‘ agent announced Tuesday that James has exercised his early termination clause, and will become an unrestricted free agent (Broussard, June 24).

James had until June 30 to make a decision.

With James now a free agent, there’s a chance it will impact Carmelo Anthony‘s own free agency.

However, most feel that James opting out is simply the first step of restructuring his deal with Miami, which would allow them more flexibility.

With him technically being a free agent, there’s also the chance that James leaves Miami.

Teams that have or are in position to clear the necessary cap space to make a run at James include the Bulls, Rockets, and Suns.

There is a scenario where Melo and Lebron can wind up in Knicks uniform. Far fetched but possible :

Knicks unload Bargs and Chandler for picks (even 2nd rounder). and get trade exceptions worth $25M

We can use that to offer Lebron 4 years/98M.

Obviously, we can resign Melo and offer him the maximum and parlay him into recruiting Labron on our behalf :

  • Melo get his money
  • Melo and Lebron get to play together
  • Phil gives a coup d'etat to  the rat in Miami
  • Knicks are the better for it.
  • I love it
  • All true Knicks fan love it !

TKB- Biggie  - Tell me why this scenario is not possible?

This is going to be the way it goes. Players get together sign exact deals and play together. That's the new NBA. Melo to Heat , LBJ to Clipps. Anything is possible. Kinda lame

LeBron learning the triangle with Derek Fisher as his coach - i don't think so.

Hilarious if he comes to NY and switched places with Melo and wins here. And Melo after leaving doesn't win anything.

Lebron James is officially the nomad of the NBA.... The man is a great player, has 2 rings but will never be the anchor of a dynasty team! As a Knick fan I say no thanks.

I called Dallas the sleeper in LeRing and Melo sweepstakes last week. Cuban has been threading waters since they lost on 2010 FA. As I stated before, Cuban is ready to make amends of so many misfires in free agents like, Miami trio, Melo, CP3, DWill D12.

Some people in this blog live in fantasy land. There is no way Leflop is coming to NY and to be honest I do NOT want him here because he is a FAKER!!! For me Lefraud can take his talent to another zip code..

I want my team to win clean, with grace, and under fair competition.

If Melo signs with another team without a sign and trade then the Knick could possibly execute a sign and trade for another free agent this summer. The cap is projected to jump to around 63 mil which put the threshold at around 71 million. If the Knicks refuse to take back salary in a sign and trade then  Melo's 23 million dollar salary comes of the book bringing the Knicks close to the apron. This is all predicated on the projected increase in the salary cap. This maybe why Phil is reluctant to even participate in a sign and trade where the Knicks take on salary. If the Knicks do take back salary in a sign and trade( for example Boozer) then they must demand to be compensated generously in the form of draft picks and young talent. The Knicks taking back Boozer prevents the Bulls owner from  paying Boozer's salary on top of Melo's max contract.  Phil has to play chess this summer.

I'm a Knicks fan...but not a chance in hell he's coming here. I'm sooner to be drafted into the NBA, in the middle of December, because my mom wrote a letter talking about how good I am at bocce ball and how I got 3rd place at my middle school talent show between myself and one other person, than LeBron coming to the Knicks. Sorry.

Because it'd be almost impossible to find a team to want those guys without getting any money back. Only way I see it being possible is if Timmy and Shump are sent with each contract.

I'm certain ypu did't say that when the swung the trade for chandler.

No way way should HS players get paid (they don't generate nearly enough revenue, there are actual grade requirements and teachers have no incentive to pass them, anyone can be on a HS team) but college players definitely should get a piece of video game sales, jerseys sales, TV money etc.

The education system is already broke. (In most states) No money to pay players even if they deserved it. Maybe private pay to go schools could give a discount (some already do) to recruit players.

@jeandd323 @Tony Fonseca  I have no talents to take somewhere else. I just want to make sure I keep it real for you guys. If you dream about LeRing coming to NY, it is your business. I am done with him and his antics!!!

@Tony Fonseca @jeandd323 LOL - I was just busting your chops a little bit - lol

I hate Lefraud more than the next guy for his antics and the decision.

I want my team to win. If there is a way to get him, I say we go for it.

I would go kidnap or harm Amare and Bargs myself to coerce them into opting out so that we can make room to acquire Lelache.

@Buck50

The technical difference is that colleges offer students a scholarship in exchange for their labor. Given the time demands and the requirements placed on scholarship athletes, they have been deemed employees by a court. High school athletes, despite all the effort and time they put in, receive no additional benefit over other students, unlike college student-athletes.

Traded Player Exception[edit]

If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (the deal hereafter referred to as "Trade #1"), they receive a Traded Player Exception, also known as a "Trade Exception". Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc.) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc. are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks directly for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents, as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.
