‘Melo looks lean after summer workouts

Sam Spiegelman

Knicks small forward Carmelo Anthony is emphasizing the “small” part of his position.

Anthony posted this photo to Instagram on Monday:

This seems to be a trend among NBA small forwards, as LeBron James reportedly cut out carbs this summer and also appeared slimmer in recent photos.

Anthony has never been as physically gifted as LeBron, but now is slimmer as he attempts to take less pressure off his joints and faster on the court.

If you’re a fan of Bill Simmons and his online magazine Grantland, then you’re going to be a fan of ESPN’s newest program. The network announced Tuesday that it will debut Simmons’ own series — “The Grantland Basketball Show” — on Oct. 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET. The show will be an hour long, and there will be up to 18 episodes during the coming NBA season. NESN.com -

Steph Curry going home??:

The subject was raised to Curry on The Doug Gottlieb Show last week when asked if watching what James did would lead him to consider playing for his hometown Charlotte Hornets. "I've always had thoughts about playing at home, what it would be like," said Curry, who is in the middle of a four-year, $44 million contract extension with the Warriors. "My dad played there for 10 years, and people around the Greater Charlotte area in North Carolina have done a lot for my family growing up, so you always think about it. Oakland Tribune -

I have been reading the posts about our weaknesses defensively. First and foremost we have a coaching staff that is going to actually teach defense, for the first time since JVG was the coach (Brown tried but Starberry led a revolt and DAZeke backed his drugmate). There was a different look in the defense during the summer league, organized rotations, and actual schemes for different situations. You people that continuously comment should perhaps actually look occasionally at what the team is doing. To that end you will see Rose guarded in a triangular fashion with help on either side to limit penetration, and a different look on pick and roll. If you look at the history of PJs career, his teams have always been a great on the def side . I don`t see that changing. Defense is a team thing, not an individual thing

Good luck to Calderon guarding kyrie and rose first two games lol

The knicks need a better defensive pg I can't preach this enough we need some athletic that can tKe the ball to the hole and give our other players some easybaskets too. Shump is not the Anwser he is an offensive liability .

According to rotoworld.com, Eric Bledsoe is strongly considering signing the qo with the suns and Greg Monroe will sign the qo with the pistons, you can add those to the free agent class with gasol, al jefferson, Aldridge and rondo, what do you guys think of Bledsoe, Monroe and Al Jefferson? Question, if we sign a max guy in 2015, will we have cap space in 2016?

Knicks_Fanatic

Just a word of caution on Greg Monroe. He has until October 1st to actually sign the qualifying offer. I'd assume that his agent will now work on a sign and trade to get him a long term deal, rather than risk playing out the season.

brookdon
brookdon

Fire up the trade machine. Who would you give him for Monroe knowing that he basically gets to choose where he's traded?

@MeloStat301. Not sure I could watch that "homer" for an hour... 45 minutes each episode would be dedicated to the Celtics

@Chris. Mostly people that don't even watch for things like that and that can't watch summer league or pre season or even regular season. Just like to complain

@Chris To be fair. I thought Woodson taught defense as well before he went switch crazy. The key to playing good defense is the entire team buying in. Rose and Boozer not known for defense did well in Thibs system. Thibs also surrounded Rose and Boozer with really good defenders to mask their flaws. If you go back to that game where Shump shut down Rose, look at the defense the entire Knicks team played. They shut down the P&R, Rose and Noah. There also wasn't much switching going on. The Knicks played outstanding defense to end that year 18-6. They also played really good defense the following year during the 54 W season.

I agree the Triangle will lead to better defense but you also need guys in key positions that can defend. The whole team has to buy in.

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@Chris  Well said coach....also the triangle offense in itself...puts people in position to defend on the other side of the court..there will always be 2 (guards) or possibly three (wing) back on the strong or weak side of the triangle..essentially having them get back in transition easily and set up the defense.

@siknick. He can't be any worse than Kerr...

Get em out of the way early I guess lol

All three? We'll have about $25 mill in cap space, we couldn't afford that.

@OLDKNICK3 No chance at getting Monroe.

Maybe as a FA next season, but decisions will have to be made.

I like him, but he's treated like a superstar in this place.

@Knicks_Fanatic

why .. fear of injury...that Paul George injury sure has everyone thinking the worst outcome .... as if injury is new to the sport....smh

Seth Nadler

Nobody and I wouldn't even want him next year as a free agent. Monroe isn't a game changer and doesn't put us any closer to a chip.

ChamanTKB

@brookdon

Why trade anyone....why not just wait til he's a UFA next year and offer him cash

@NoVaCaInE @Chris

Yes, a system can only do so much in terms of giving the team an opportunity to succeed. The rest is on the players. If you look back at "Linsanity" it was the defense of Chandler, Jeffries, Shump, Fields, Lin, Novak, Walker and Bibby that keyed that run. Now that's an unlikely group to succeed on the defensive end, but they put it together for a short run.

Chris
Chris

@NoVaCaInE @Chris Counterpoint. That roster had Chandler Balkmann Douglass jeffries all very good defenders. The also had been relieved of AH Dumphony. That is called the Hawthorne effect

Chris
Chris

@MeloStat301 Yes, the triangle offense is an offshoot of John  Woodens High Post off that had definitive positioning on shot attempts. We also look at Phils mentoring by RedH, who used to balance back 3 in a triangle to stop the vaunted Celtic break of the Russell era. Phil is well schooled in defense

We overrate him then our offense suffers because he can't shoot

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@VerySilentJay @OLDKNICK3 I wouldn't say he's treated like a Superstar. There are people here, myself included that really like his skill set. He has a really good post game with some nice post moves and counter moves. He can hit the mid range shot. He can finish off the P&R with both hands. He's a really good passer. He's a complete offensive player and a perfect fit for the Triangle. He's young and is just scratching the surface. He could improve defensively but I think he has the potential to be a Pau Gasol type player. He will also mesh well with Melo and can be depended on to score when Melo is doubled or on the bench.

I can't be mad at a Calderon, JR, Melo, Monroe attack.

brookdon
brookdon

Because Pistons know he's out and will try and trade him before he gets to FA.

brookdon

And Because we won't be the only team after him

@Knicks_Fanatic. REALLY? I think he was much younger when he won his 5 rings.................

@chitwood. If no one likes your comments or responds, it's a possibility. I can see you're comment so your good

Monroe and Gasol in the same bucket? Gasol is a first team defensive center, he's a true center that has played on a team in the western conference Finals. Monroe hasn't even made the playoffs, wait hasn't even been on a team with a winning record.

ChamanTKB
ChamanTKB

@brookdon

they could trade him all they want...he doesn't have to extend his contract or S&T..and the team picking him up would lose out at both ends...Pistons have no say in the matter

greekfreak
greekfreak

Early will be good on D aswell... Not sure he will play opening night tho.

brookdon

Problem is, how do you hide him. Put Calderon on Butler who has a good 6 inches on him?

brookdon
brookdon

The Pistons have been a terrible organization since the Billups days. Multiple coaches, not building proper teams (the nonsensical Smith signing) etc. Put Monroe in the right situation and you have a gamechanger.

Knicks_Fanatic
Knicks_Fanatic

@Seth Nadler

Monroe has played for 4 coaches in 4 seasons in the Motor City, that's not how any team makes the playoffs.

If I'm not mistaken Calderon is 6'5

greekfreak

@VerySilentJay. Just enough to get his feet wet.. That's cool by me. My point was that I think he can play D... No one is mentioning him, only Shump
