Down 3-1 in the NBA Finals, the Miami Heat have already had internal discussions about bumping their Big Three to a Big Four this summer by reeling in possible free agent Carmelo Anthony (ESPN, June 12).
In order for the Heat to sign Anthony, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh would all need to take pay cuts. Sources told ESPN.com that Heat officials, along with the team’s leading players, have already begun discussing their options for creating financial flexibility to make a run at the Knicks key scorer.
The Heat are not permitted to make any formal contact with Anthony until July 1, and even then can only do so if he opts out of the final year of his contract – a decision he has until June 23 to make.
The idea of Anthony joining the Heat is enticing to James as they have a similar skill set. Anthony and James, along with the Heat’s other two stars have maintained a good relationship since entering the league at the same time.
