More sources saying Melo expected to return to Knicks

Following up the New York Daily News report that Carmelo Anthony will return to the Knicks, more sources are saying that a deal could be announced on Thursday or Friday.

A report in Newsday cites sources saying that the Knicks are “optimistic” Melo will re-sign (Iannazzone, July 10).

ESPN’s Marc Stein, on ESPN Radio, also claimed to hear that a deal is imminent and an announcement will come soon.

Marc Berman of the New York Post reports that the Knicks are expected to officially hear from Carmelo on Thursday (NYP, July 10).

Keith Schlosser, Lead Writer

There are plenty of business reasons for Anthony to stay in the Big Apple. One of the biggest markets in the world, there are endorsement opportunities galore. Though their championship drought has now surpassed forty years, the Knicks are still also one of the most storied franchises in all of the NBA. Madison Square Garden is the mecca of basketball.

If making a decision was simply all about that, it’d be an easy one. But attempting to win in New York with the Knicks may be a challenge. What Phil Jackson does with the roster remains to be seen, so re-signing with the team would confirm Anthony’s faith in the thirteen-time NBA champion turned rookie executive. Five years is a big commitment at this point in the forward’s career, so a Big Apple return would indicate Anthony trusts Jackson. He’s taking a chance. There are questions marks surrounding the squad, even if Anthony remains on board.

Because of that, Anthony’s heart would need to be in this, if he ultimately chooses to stay with the Knicks as expected. According to Frank Isola (who spoke with “a friend” of Anthony), it certainly appears to be. Believing he has unfinished business in New York indicates that Anthony understands how driven and hungry the city and respective team’s fan base really is for success, let alone a championship.

Melo and Lebron are drama queens, stretching this out on purpose for their own vanity.

@TheKnicksWall: Phil Jackson and the Knicks have about five different contract offers that Carmelo Anthony can pick from. No word from Melo yet, though.

Getting a server error now on Lebron's site.  The web developers are definitely fiddling with it.

These Bronghazi conspiracies are amazing

People who work for companies who make this much out if themselves are usually not considered "team players" and are fired. Looks like Melo and Bron are waiting for their suitors to make the decisions fir them, like Melo wants Chicago or the Knicks to say " no longer interested, we are moving on". Bron is more complicated, i don't think he wants to play for either team, which is why i hope Phil figures a way to dump salaries and bust a move on bron to NY, which is where he should be.

@MeloStat301 I think this kinda confirms he is both waiting for Phil to make some more moves and coming back.

Just my opinion.

@brookdon I like it. 5 different options. More options the better.

@Daniel Nguyen @JesusBlasTheKnickWay I gotta admit...whenever I read an SAS article I always picture his voice and cadence when I'm reading it.  The articles suck but that makes them at least a little entertaining.

@edb7777 @philj It is worth it because lets be honest...its not like there is a better option out there

and, interestingly, people are going to that site for the same reason as the other two - to fabricate conspiracy and J-off

@philj @edb7777 His numbers last year were marginally better than Toney Douglas.  Granger also signed for that amount and he has much more potential to help a team.  But considering the Vet min is less than a million less its not too bad I suppose.

@edb7777 @saintknick @tommy2b loading again, after SQL runtime error.

Traffic isn't an issue on major traffic'd sites paying for the bandwidth, but I doubt lebron is expecting thousands of visitors a second.

And usually web editors don't mess with live sites - they just upload a whole update when its ready (whcih could cause the error as well)

@edb7777 @MeloStat301 @knicksgirl35

# Player Options give the player the right to invoke the option. There can be only one option year.

# Player Early Termination Options (ETOs) give the player the right to terminate the contract early. An ETO can't occur prior to the end of fourth season of the contract (which implies that the contract must be for at least five seasons).

MeloStat301
MeloStat301

@edb7777 @knicksgirl35  * Options can occur only when one season remains on the contract, while ETOs can occur when two seasons remain if the contract is for six seasons.
* Options can be included in any multiyear contract, but ETOs are allowed only with five or six year contracts.
* Options can be held by the player or the team, but ETOs are always held by the player (i.e., there's no such thing as a team Early Termination Option).
* Option years may not have a lower salary than the previous season. ETOs have no such restriction.
* A contract with a player option can be extended when the option is not exercised. A contract with an ETO may not be extended if the ETO is exercised.
* When determining the amount of a trade bonus (see question number 85), option years are not counted as part of the remaining value of the contract, but years following an ETO are counted.
