Something very fishy going on.  The more this drags out, the more it seems we are losing Melo.  I think yesterday was leaked to Isola to paint a picture of Melo content and wanting to be here, but then the meeting with Lebron and Riley happened coincidentally at roughly the same time.  I think Riley told Lebron we are severing ties with Bosh and working on Melo and D_wade is willing to take even less money to make this happen.  Melo can say he was in fact all in, but waiting to see what else the Knicks could do at the last minute and this opportunity with the Heat came to fruition and it was hard to say no.  Just seems like something is going on and I dont doubt for a second Riley would off Bosh immediately for Melo at the behest of Lebron

OK - assume for a moment Melo comes to NY and they DON'T clear Amare and Bargs. I have two arguments.

1) Phil Jackson has ALWAYS turned his team around in year 1. The bulls won 8 more games and went to the finals with basically the same players as the previous year. LA won the whole thing. If you look at the individual player numbers in both cases, it wasn't the stars who were substantially better - it was EVERYONE ELSE...

Look at those bulls - he didn't ADD anyone, but everyone from Horace Grant to Scottie Pippin went from a good player to a VERY good player. Pippin, in the triangle (or quasi-triangle as I believe phil had just started to master it) had similar, albiet better numbers on offense. But his defense became MUCH better - more steals, more blocks, more stops - because of team-ball. His assist went up 30% becuase of TEAM BALL.

In Los Angeles, the 99-2000 season wasn't anything to draw a lot from. He took two of the top 3 guys in basketball, brought over some of his smartest guys from Chicago, and won a title. But egos broke the team down. Kobe wanted to win, but his way (not in boring triangle), and the fights, and the eventual sexual assault case were too much - (3 titles though)...

But in his return in 2005, we see the Knicks.

Phil took over a team that had Kobe Bryant and NOTHING ELSE. That teams best other player was Lamar Odom, then SMUSH PARKER - and their future was Kwame brown. They made the playoffs on Kobe having a 35-5-5 season. By 2007 at the deadline they got Pau Gasol, but not enough to work yet. 2008-9, the team had Kobe, Pau, Odom, Bynum - and they were playing the triangle and they were playing as a team, and they looked really really good. 2009-11 they grabbed 2 more chips.

NOW LETS CONTRAST ALL THAT to the KNICKS. Go look at those lakers roster when he first came and what you'll see is the Knicks already have a much better roster, top to bottom. But like those early bulls and later lakers, players had to improve, and Batman (kobe, MJ) needed a robin (pau, scottie).

SO what does all that mean?

2) Knicks rebuild will take 2 years and we need to be patient.

Knicks have a better roster than the 2nd iteration Lakers had, and they have the flexibility to make moves next year. I expect the Knicks to out-play their expectations from the media (assuming they are "fighting for that 8-seed, no where near as good as brooklyn blah blah blah") but as constructed, they can't get it done. Is melo going to average 35pts /game on 45% shooting like Kobe did?

Phil will need a year to get the triangle in, to get his players in (like he did with the lakers), and to find a robin to Melo's Batman. And don't be surprised if its in the middle of the season for a package of guys like THJr, Larkin, Shumpert, JR, Bargnani etc.

But we cannot expect the Knicks to be contending this year. Lets just enjoy it if it happens.

IDK if this was already suggested but I see Houston have to get rid of Lin T jones and Montejous (spelling?) in order to sign Bosh and Parsons. So i was think why not use the trade exception from Felton to take Jones and Monte. since its rumored that they already have a deal lined up for lin? I mean yes we would be helping out the Rockets by allowing them to get Parsons and Bosh BUT we would also be helping our selves getting younger, cheaper, more assets.

If no one jobs the Knicks other than Melo, are we really that bad?

Calederon/Larkin/Prigs

Shump/THJR/Shannon Brown

Melo/JR/Early

Brags/Stat/Tyler/Odom

Dalembert/Cole

That's better talent and depth than most teams in the east.

Bulls would be first seed

Wherever Lebron is would be second

Pacers third

Wizards

Hawks

Nets

Knicks

Hornets

After the first two slots the rest are debatable

If Lebron decides on Miami, he might never be able to go home again.

That Anthony is training with Durant and Love, his Olympic teammates, is interesting since the Knicks feel they may have a chance to eventually add one of those All-Stars. Love can become a free agent next summer and has mentioned the Knicks as one of the clubs he would consider.

The problem is that Love is expected to be traded by Minnesota before next summer and the Knicks don’t have the assets to get him. If Love is traded to a team of his choice, he will likely re-sign with that club. The Boston Celtics, in fact, are a possible destination.

Durant, the reigning league MVP, is scheduled to become a free agent in the summer of 2016. There is already talk of Durant leaving Oklahoma City for a larger market.

To keep Parsons' rights & still sign Bosh to max, they have to dump another $3,732,744 in guaranteed salary. That's Jones AND Motiejunas.

Everyone wanted Melo to take less than max. I personally wanted him around the 18 million mark but this was before the offseason started. Now 20-21 million a year is a fair number.  No one knew these players would be dished out these ridiculous contracts.  We all were speculating numbers before the offseason started.  That's why we originally thought 17-18 million a season was a fair number.  He is most likely taking the max anyways.

Melo is worth EVERY penny he is offered or gets...

PERIOD!

CAME TO PLAY EVERY NIGHT!!!!

With a doo doo coach and a team that absolutely GAVE UP...

He took NO NIGHTS OFF... How do some of you to expect him to lead a team that is not playing and tuned Woodson out? He put the team on his back and played through injuries... lets not forget that...

EVERY EFFIN PENNY...

Whats my plan the rest of the offseason if i was in PJ seat? I wouldn't trade Amare andAB if it means giving away Shump and THJR just for cap space. I would look to teams looking to get out of a bad situation with very good players. The next move i would make is calling up the Pistons and offer them J Smith for AB straight up salary dump for the pistons.

Yea i know i read it on here that Smith is a head case and takes too many 3s i agree, no doubt. Smith is also a very good defender at the 4 (save Melo from playing the 4), when shooting inside the arc ( which in the triangle he will be) he is pretty good, he has been near the top of the league in blocks, very athletic and he makes 13 mil a year!!! I dont know why everyone thinks thats a lot but Gordon making 16 mil, Frye making 8 mil, should i continue with how Smith at 13  mil is a good deal?

The best of all, HE IS BETTER THAN AB and would be an improvement for the knicks at the PF

I saw some one last night made a comment about Fisher looking fat and starting to look like woody in the summer league practice highlights; i say BS on that. I dont care what the coach looks like honestly but fisher is always in great shape and take care of him self throughout his career why would he stop now?

I see a lot of ppl crying over the 129 mil saying Melo should take less; TBH i would have liked that too but it seems as if he won't; then it occurred to me. If PJ laid out a championship plan to Melo with Melo getting his 129 mil why worry about it then? Obviously PJ is ok building a championship team with Melo getting 129 mil and if so i am too.

We have all mention about getting cap space for 2015 by trading Amare and AB along with Shump and THJR but why trade Amare and Shump, AB and THJR for cap space this season ? I mean Lebron isn't coming with the cap space we would make with those moves, who else would you like us to sign after those trades? How about we re-sign Melo and wait till trade deadline and see what team has buyers remorse on a star or really really good players and wanna start over. At this point Amare and AB can be traded on their own.

No one worth while is available to sign, keep Amare and Bargs, see if anything comes up mid season. Last season was pretty bad for most of the Knicks, trade value should go up for some.

Go after Marc in the off season.

Since people seem blind to Shump's defensive skill, here are the best defensive SGs last year according to Real Defensive Plus Minus stat (the only real stat there is for D):

Danny Green           2.89

Tony Allen                  2.74

Vince Carter               2.45

Iman Shumpert          2.00

Thabo Sefolosha       1.96

Jimmy Butler             1.23

Shump is one of the best.  This is obvious if you watch the defensive side of the ball IMO, not sure what some of you are watching.  Personally I would rank them Allen, Green, Shump, Butler based on eye test, but I don't see much of the west coast guys.

saintknick

@KnicksMaybeThisYear Man, I hope Larkin gets some run in the PnR with Amare. I know the triangle isn't a set pick and roll scheme - instead all about movement picks and screens, but that was Larkin's best skill.

Look, this team has a lot of POTENTIAL but a lot of PROBLEMS too. The defense of this squad is downright terrible and the front 3 don't mesh well. Dalembert can't play more than 25 minutes effectively (go look if you don't believe me). Cole is a fun player and a good rebounder, but he's not an NBA defender (at least hasn't been).

IF JR plays like he did end of last season, IF THJr plays NBA defense (just better than Harden is enough for me at this point), IF Early is ready to go at an NBA level like Shump was his rookie year (AND BY THE WAY - he's DEFINITELY not a SG - he's more likely to get time at PF than SG - he's a SF) so that he can take some minutes off Melo and even play the SF with Melo at PF some times, IF STAT stays healthy and plays solid defense for stat, IF Bargnani takes fewer 3's and plays the pick and pop well - IF ALL THOSE THINGS happen, the team could be pretty solid.

A lot would have to go right, but what is funny is the team would have what both kinds of fans want.

1) A true STAR

2) A deep team where everyone on the floor can score and not just stand around (like San Antonio, Indy, etc.)

The problem will still be defense, but imagine what the team can do with 40 million in the next offseason along with whatever assets they can squeeze at the deadling from Stat, Bargnani, Shumpert (if he's not part of the future).

WHAT WE ALL NEED TO DO THIS SEASON IS BE PATIENT - Melo as well. I hope this team looks frustrated and loses a ton of games early because it means they are really trying to learn the new system and that causes big growing pains. I hope we see guys like Larkin, Early, Tyler, Cole, and maybe even some summer league invites, getting meaningful minutes - NOT because they are better NBA players than Jose, JR, Stat, etc - but because they buy into the system of team ball.

Phil wouldn't lie to Melo. Apart from landing Lebron or lucking into Pau Gasol (and Pau finding the fountain of youth) this is a two year process to transition. NOW PHIL hasn't ever actually taken 2 years - both the bulls and lakers were excellent year 1 - but they also had Shaq and Pippin to go along with the best living player of that time period (though I argue shaq>kobe any day).

If Melo is good with that, good to be the leader, a teacher, to become the real face of this franchise in a way he hasn't been before becuase he had no one to teach him... then this team can really be something in a couple year.

Last year if you remember a lot of crazy stuff happened

JR and Shump coming off of injuries and playing terribly

Amare looked like he never played basketball

Tyson injured

Bargs injured

Woodson playing JR 30 minutes every game

Felton playing Blazers Felton basketball

Woodson on the hot seat the whole season

Lost three point shooting (their strength) from the year before

Lost countless close games on poor planning and execution... silly mistakes

@KnicksMaybeThisYear ...Hornets play in Western Conference ...........

...and i agree , even if Knicks only retain melo ...i think the Knicks are def a 4-5 seed regardless ,with proper sysytem and coaching .

PS,.....people dont seem to realize that Knicks last season lost like 10-12 games by 4 points or less, with potato head at the helm .

@orlando_knickfan It is interesting - that team made brilliant long term moves for years and then when they decided to pull the trigger, they go get Insane D. Howard and no-D, whistle-centric harden, and make a string of dumb decisions thereafter - not to mention poison pill Lin.

Don't get me wrong, I'd take either Howard or Harden in a second, and Lin is a nice 3'rd guard no doubt (I don't love or hate the guy - he's adequate in basically every regard).

Now they have to trade Lin and either lock up all flexibility on a non championship team by resigning a guy they had last year, or let that important player go for nothing and hope another Parson's falls into their lap.

Didn't they also draft a guy who was bat-shnat-crazy?

@knicksgirl35  Maybe.  I want to give him another try under new coaches.

One thing that scouts say, is if you see a player do something during a spell, that means they CAN do it, even if you don't see it again at other times.  Shump had a crap year, but he played superstar ball during that texas trip - I can't forget that.  He has that in him, he (or his coaches) need to find a way to tap that consistently.

MeloStat301

@rico  Melo – a guy who got a DUI on the eve of the playoffs in Denver, a punk who threw a sucker punch in the Garden while playing for the Nuggets, and a thug who appeared in the famous “Stop Snitchin” video – had the franchise by the balls from the day he forced a trade to New York. The Knicks foolishly overpaid Denver for him – and please, STOP with the, “he would have gone elsewhere if they didn’t!” garbage because there’s no way he was going to accept a trade to the Nets – and then when he got to the island and the Knicks struggled, the former No. 3 pick in the draft moped because he didn’t have anyone around him.

http://thebiglead.com/2012/07/16/jeremy-lins-gone-and-you-can-blame-carmelo-anthony/

I'm NOT a racist...I'm a realist..this has been said in the media plenty of times, and its a stigma that has stuck w/Melo for whatever reason..its sad in this day in age, people cant believe that others can change..it says a lot about them on a personal level.

saintknick

@MeloStat301 I think Melo had a long path to shake off a lot of the culture of his youth - and so do all of us really. I don't care about what he did in the past as long as he wasn't malicious and evil - and nothing in the past was all that malicious - even the sucker punch is just part of the aggression of the game. I've been sucker punched by a good friend on the court because I made him look the fool.

As to the trade, keep in mind it was about the CBA - Melo said he couldn't risk uncertainty (some speculated if he waited to sign a contract till a new CBA he could leave 40 mil on the table. If I recall, it wasn't that he would go to the Nets - it was that he would stay with the nuggets and MAYBE try and force a trade down the line.

@MeloStat301 Thank you for this post. Racism/bigotry is the central cause for how Melo is treated.
