And re: Grabner, another player fans here want to dump over the side of the boat (and, I imagine, only hope he drowns); don't forget: OT is three-on-three this year. And Grabner could be to that what Nielsen is (or was) to the SO.

@Logan Monstuart I've seen this point made about Grabner and the 3 on 3, but the man doesn't finish.  Maybe he will surprise us but since his first year with us, what do you think his percentage of conversions on break aways is?  I would venture to say 10%.  So yes, he is a threat on both the PK and the OT, but if he cannot convert, we're better off with someone else on the ice.  And pursuant to Red's point below, the rest of the league agrees because Snow couldn't move him.

@Logan Monstuart

Garth Snow tried hard to trade Grabner at the draft, and failed.  Perhaps it's the $5 million in cash or even the $3 million in cap hit, or maybe nobody wants him.  There is only one more year on his deal so maybe he becomes a dead line deal.  I do not think Snow will expose him to waivers so, he's the #13 forward, and insurance against Grabovski getting hit in the head again...

@since72 @Logan Monstuart He may not finish well -- Gene Carr anyone? -- but, again, three-on-three: lotta space, they have to cover him, makes one of the other two -- Tavares, Strome -- open to bury the shot.

His speed would create tons of chances plus it keeps the defenders on their heels.

@Logan Monstuart Would hate to give up on Grabner just yet. The goal he scored last Pens game was world class. If he can find a way to do more of that it would be huge for the team.

I hope they have a plan for altering the Barclay before the Isles move in.  Those gaping holes with no seats at one end of the arena with the off center scoreboard look really bush league.  I hear too that the view from the upper tier seats isn't all that wonderful either.  Leave it to this organization to move from the oldest worst dump in the league to the newest worst dump in the league.

clark_9
clark_9

@Macacawitz yea and the left field bleachers at Fenway are awful. no one will ever watch a game in ball park with such an abnormally high wall. Barclays is what it is, embrace it because it's gonna be home for a long time. BTW, all the bathrooms are inside the arena.

<< . . . the newest worst dump in the league. >>

True, but the locker room is so pretty.

@dkdk hey DK, actually not true: http://www.ballparkeguides.com/fenway-park-how-to-avoid-obstructed-views.php#.VaLO87PF-mE

my point was, it's not the end of the world that barclays is not perfect and better to view the imperfections as giving the place personality than complaining about things that won't change....the team seems to be investing in the locker room and player facilities that they can control and that is the most important thing for attracting and retaining players...

@Vicp73 @clark_9 @Macacawitz vic i don't get involved in your he said she said crap...it's one of the things that diminishes this blog. i am happy to debate the present, but you're bringing up something from dozen's of threads ago...kinda lame...anyway:

1) edmonton did not sweep boston in the finals, the bruins won game 3, 2-1.

2) during the smyth division finals when Edmonton defeated the winnipeg jets 4 games to 3, there were myriad bad calls against Paul Fenton and Thomas Steen...the league controls officiating. perhaps as an islander fan i was cheering against the oilers because i did not want them to get more cups than the islanders...perhaps the league wanted edmonton to advance...who cares? it was 25 years ago.

3) you believe Sather's a great GM because he won 5 cups...good for you. I disagree, i think he was blessed with mark messier for 5 cups and wayne gretzky for 4...i think the players won. i think the 5 cups correlates to having those players....that's why sather never won in NY...he was good with messier, but not as effective without him.

4) you can bash snow all you want, you can overlook the martin st.louis deal and other sather errors and bash snow and praise sather...bottom line I think the islanders as constructed by snow will win a cup before the rangers do...and while winning 5 cups in 7 years like edmonton did is a great accomplishment, present-day sather has done a poor job optimizing the rangers' cap position...snow is doing a great job managing the islanders' cap position.

Vicp73
Vicp73

@clark_9 @Vicp73 @Macacawitz haha priceless , so the GM who dealt for the eventual Conn Smyth trophy winner ( Bill Ranford) in 1988 came back from 3 games to one  to go on and win the Cup in 1990 was a result of some bad calls against Paul Fenton and Thomas Steen ???  Wow !!!!!! I can't believe Sather was stupid enough to draft Gretzky and messier , who knows how many cups he would have won if he went in a different direction draft wise. Bud just admit you f'd up ? Or you wanna knock the guy who just built  a team who went to the finals a year ago

clark_9
clark_9

@Vicp73 @clark_9 @Macacawitz why are you so angry? i answered your call for elaboration. we disagree...sather's had plenty of time as ranger's GM...evaluate those drafts vs snow's...how's that trade for yandle working out?...and the st.louis trade the year before?...if sather were such a great evaluator of talent in 1988, why has he been so bad in 2014+15? he had an unlimted budget before the cap, an owner who gave him total control--didn't win...now with the cap he's getting slammed and he bailed.

look, i understand being frustrated that the islanders have not "accomplished" much since '93...but don't let the past bury (as in milbury) the future...you chose to be angry, i chose to be aspirational. it took the expansion islanders 8 years to win a cup in a 21 team league...there's 30 teams now, let's see how snow does over the next 4 years (12 in total because the league's 50% bigger)...sather's been playing checkers and he's traded away several picks and prospects--he went for it all and whiffed...snow's playing chess and has prospects coming up that will take this team not only to the finals but also to a cup victory.

clark_9
clark_9

@Vicp73 @Macacawitz vic you also have your facts confused...

1) sather never drafted gretzky...oiler owner peter pocklington bought the contract. sather supported/endorsed the action.

2) messier was a 3rd round pick...if sather's so great why did he select kevin lowe in the first round and leave messier for the 3rd? did lowe have a better career?

3)you repeatedly confuse correlation and causation...sather was coaching that team...while he was also GM most Oiler fans credit the team's top scout Barry Fraser with a lot of the great draft picks (Paul Coffey) of that era.

4) i'm heading out for a run...have a good night

In Fenway every seat can see the batter. In Barclays not every seat can see both nets.

And some paint Barclays as Shang rai Lai so any criticism will automatically be taken as a huge personal attack.

Vicp73
Vicp73

@clark_9 @Macacawitz Hey clark9 , please remind me again how the NHL fixed the 1990 Stanley Cup finals in favor of the Oilers. When i suggested Sather was a great GM you said he was overrated and only won cups because he had Messier . And the 5th cup was a gift by the league . Please elaborate

Vicp73
Vicp73

@clark_9 @Vicp73 @Macacawitz 5 Stanley Cups Clark, 5 Stanley Cups . What makes your boy Snow such a great GM other then never winning a thing . Please elaborate how the NHL fixed the Oilers 5th cup. Don't walk away from probably one of the most dull-witted comments on this blog . Explain how the league managed to gift the Oilers the fifth Cup after sweeping Boston in  the finals

dkdk

Paying people and winning draws players. Sight lines, winning, and affordability brings in fans.

And Red Sox ownership never tried to use the team to build whatever they saw fit before moving the team.

clark_9
clark_9

@Vicp73 @clark_9 @Macacawitz thanks man. BTW the vanek trade was absolutely a mistake...at the time i did not mind the idea, but it should have been structured better...ie we give less if vanek does not sign (ie only a second round pick)...garth should have protected the team better or walked from the deal. everyone makes mistakes, garth seems to recover from his...hopefully he does not repeat past mistakes. Have to take the bad with the good...that one was definitely a mistake.

Vic , you can keep your 5 Stanley cups , we apparently win the draft year after year, do nothing but refill our prospect pool year after year, throw the best draft parties.... The bar around here is set so low it's embarrassing, the summer of kool aid is back... Jeez!

Vicp73
Vicp73

@clark_9 @Vicp73 @Macacawitz Yes sorry your right , Edmonton won 4 games to 1 . How dare Glen Sather Hire Barry Fraser as his head scout and pick Kevin Lowe Before Messier . And your also right about Peter Pocklington buying out Gretzky's contract from Houston . Why didn't all the the other great GM"s see Wayne's potential ?

Some great points Clark9, Why didn't Bill Torrey select Trottier before Clark Gillies ? Torrey must be a bad GM.

The fact that your debating this is more disturbing then the Vanek trade , but i Know how all the Snow supporters role so i'm not surprised . Enjoy your run

Which GM hired AV and which hired cappy?

dkdk
dkdk

Remember Chris ... Wang is the first person in history to get credit for not moving a team by moving the team. Add some shed tears for "losing 25m" a year and that not acknowledge the 300m or so profit between buy and sell. And of course 2 of his subordinates from CA are doing his prison stretch. We should all have it so rough.

clark_9
clark_9

@dkdk AV's great...but first he hired trottier for 54 games, then ron low...then himself...tom renney (class act) and then tortorella (not class act)...then AV...in his 14th yr as GM....if you want to develop young talent consistency/stability is important..say what you will re cappy, but the young players are developing pretty well

dkdk
dkdk

Until he wins a series it is all just hot air. Let me rephrase, name a good coach snow hired. Point out one good deadline deal he has made. As a GM he has been a head amateur scout.

Camb the bar keeps lowering. Now a first round exit is greeted with euphoria. And I guess since it is the WangSnow high water mark why wouldn't it.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@clark_9 @Macacawitz  Clark, Fenway Park was built in 1912 and is aesthetically pleasing.  There are no hideous gaping holes in the side of the green monster used for storage that the fans need to stare at.  The Barclay for hockey looks awful.  If you're too mentally challenged to see that then  there's nothing I or anyone else can do to help you.   Now I suggest you go back to rolling your turds or whatever else it is that you do to amuse yourself.

We have all these pieces, guys, and girl: there are players out there; classic four-for-two. And the Cup is ours.

Query: for argument's sake, Saad is still with Chi; Isles would trade Strome for him, Strome and ... what? Which prospect? Which draft pick? No way Chi would take it straight up.

clark_9
clark_9

@Logan Monstuart @since72 why? MDC is now 6 '3 195...a year from now he'll out weigh saad and has more upside. no way i trade strome for saad...and that's before we even discuss relative salaries Logan. Saad's not an islander, leave it be.

This rumor comes from Peter Tessier, Winnipeg Jets blogger...  "Last night I had a message from some one who knows the Flyers well and said Hextall has an offer for either Buff or Engstrom on the table. The offer was unclear but it did involve Amac as the 'favour' in the deal with other pieces. A second source said they had heard of 'talks' between the club."  Eklund adds that the rumor is real and the Flyers have the inside track over New Jersey and Boston that are also interested in Dustin Byfuglien.  Eklund adds that it is a defensive prospect from the Flyers that   makes them the front runner in the deal.

My take on this,,, it's Byfuglien's walk year at $5.2 million and if Cheveldayoff wants to move him and requires defensive pieces back,,, Garth Snow should be dialing the phone as I type.  Byfuglien makes Calvin DeHaan or Thomas Hickey expendable and there is also a deep prospect pool to add another defenseman into the deal, one not named Ryan Pulock.  I would rather have the sky scraping Buff as a third pair guy than that other rumor Snow is involved with,,, the one for the UFA Johnny Oduya...

4EverMets
4EverMets

@REDSpointofview  This makes perfect sense to me as a pos dirty player like Byfuglien would fit right into the Flyers history of cheapshot goon players. Ed Snider still thinks it's the 70's and gooning it up with intimidation still works. No thanks for the Isles! He takes too many stupid penalties and the NHL is biased enough against the Isles as is.

erika
erika

@REDSpointofview RED, I have wanted Byfuglien on the Isles for the past 5 yrs! I think he plays the game tough and is very talented ...his size does not hurt, either! All I remember about the Hawks cup win a few years ago is the play of this guy in the playoffs...he just steamrolled through everyone!....was disappointed when the Jets landed him! Have not followed him much since then...but the Jets have dramatically improved, no? ...Anyway...on the bright side, I never got the Andrew McDonald love...he was weak defensively....no surprise they are trying to unload him!

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@erika @REDSpointofview

I am with you on this move...  Byfuglien makes DeHaan unnecessary and a prospect like Pelech or Leduc might never make the team.  I don't know if that would be enough but, Byfuglien is on the last year of his deal and that should make his price a bit cheaper...

Logan Monstuart
Logan Monstuart

@REDSpointofview @erika You guys who want to dump de Haan... Don't think you're thinking it through. For starters this guy could be on the cusp of being a premier d-man; not Doughty, not Keith, but the next level. Second, you stick w a player for as long as the Isles have stuck w de Haan ... NOW you toss him away? No. Isles have plenty of parts to get Byfuglien, which I absolutely think they should use to get Byfuglien.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@Logan Monstuart @REDSpointofview @erika

I'm not really looking to dump DeHaan,,, just trying to find the required piece to make that trade.  Like Erica, I have wanted Byfuglien since his stay in Chicago.  So, if Hickey and a prospect gets it done instead of DeHaan and a prospect, all the better.  Hamonic, Boychuck, Leddy and Pulock are not options, so who's left???

4EverMets
4EverMets

@Logan Monstuart @4EverMets @REDSpointofview  No, they STILL believe in the intimidation philosophy. Every time I watch a Flyer's game they have to pull that crap after every whistle. They always have to get in the last push or punch as the puck is frozen. No other team in the NHL tries to get away with this nonsense. It is part of their DNA and it is endorsed by Flyer's owner Ed Snider who has been there since the beginning. Players that play the game tough and fair all of a sudden go to the Flyers and try to goon it up. It's like they have to take a Flyer's oath to show their toughness at ALL times. Next time you watch a Flyer's game you will see what I mean as the games take more time because of their BS.Btw, those 70's Flyer did have some finesse players like Reggie Leach and Rick Macleash so NOT all of them were goons.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@Logan Monstuart @REDSpointofview @erika

I understand why you want to keep DeHaan, there is some upside there but,,, to get Byfuglien, one of Hickey or DeHaan has to go. Unless you are planning on Pulock and Mayfield both going back to Bridgeport, a trade for Byfuglien will include on of your current top six.  Strait will be your extra defenseman this year (7 or 8), and possibly Mayfield stays around as well, but it's a numbers game and only 6 can dress every game.  Boychuck, Leddy and Hamonic are locks.  Hickey was just signed.  That leaves two spots and all accounts have Pulock taking one of them, with DeHaan the other???  That means if Byfuglien comes over, someone has to go...

4EverMets
4EverMets

@REDSpointofview  I hear you but this guy steps over the line at times and you can bet as an Islander, the NHL will not be so shy as to NOT call it or to suspend him. JT really needs that big tough wing that will not only protect him but open up the ice in the O-zone, something a Dman really cannot do. They already have Martin to take retribution on any player that takes liberties with JT. Also, Isles would have to pay him next year as he becomes a free agent. They should have tried for Sharp or Saad. This is why I have ZERO faith in Snow!

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@ 4ever...

I believe just based on this thread that Tavares' left side is already waiting for Dal Colle... It seems that Capuano wants him to win the job,,, and that makes any deal for a LW unnecessary...

4EverMets
4EverMets

@REDSpointofview  Hope you are right, I'd like to see Dal Colle on top line. But I don't trust Snow or Cappy letting this happen even if Dal Colle scores 20 goals in camp. They don't know how to handle their young players correctly.

REDSpointofview
REDSpointofview

@4ever...

I am not so sure I understand your hesitancy about Byfuglien. Most posters hereabouts are looking for that strong arm side kick to protect Tavares. He fits right into that role and can do it from the blue line rather than the first line.
