No, the Knicks Should Not Go Big

Brian DiMenna

It’s not even entirely clear where this came from, I suppose Kenyon Martin made a little noise about wanting to play more, or wanting to guard David West, something that it would seem would be perfectly natural for Kenyon to say, since I’d assume pretty much every player in the NBA thinks the answer to their team’s particular problem is usually them playing more, but in no way should the Knicks be messing up their lineup after just one game of this series.

Playing Carmelo Anthony at power forward has been pretty much the single biggest weapon for the Knicks all season, and though it is surely not the only reason for his career season, it may be the most significant.

To me, if the Knicks are worried about having to double David West in the post, the answer would be to simply stop doing that. For all the criticism his defense takes (some deserved) Melo is a capable post defender, and absolutely able to give West a hard time in the post. Along those same lines, Melo at power forward still forced the Pacers into less than ideal matchups whether they choose to guard him with West or Paul George, even as George did an exceptional job in Game 1, Anthony also just missed a lot of shots. One has to think this cold spell ends at some point.

And sure, playing Martin and Chandler together might sound good as a defensive proposition, but the problem is that given the offensive limitations of each, they’d have to produce truly elite results on the defensive end to justify playing them together for significant minutes and that hasn’t appeared to be the case to date.

The larger point is it’s just too early for the Knicks to abandon who they are, as there’s still time for the Knicks to impose their will on this series and completely reverse this conversation by the time we get to Indiana.

Ollie Maatta This is what I saw  when I seen Him play in Juniors, a kid with huge upside.Might win Rookie of the year.Just 19 plays like 25.Maybe we can trade for Pittsburghs scouting team!

I was at the game tonight with my wife and son after traveling down from upstate and had seats close behind Poulan. The reason why the Islanders are not sitting comfortably in a playoff spot is goaltending.  If the Islanders had a decent goaltender they would probably have around 62 points and would have given up at least 30 less goals even with there suspect defense. This guy is definitely not the answer in goal for the Islanders. He looks like he's catching a basketball on most shots when he should just glove it or blocker it away especially when he's hit in the bread basket with a shot. The 2nd goal was a very bad goal that basically shot off his body into the net. You can see the body language of the Islander players just sag after that 2nd goal.  It probably would have cost the Islanders Ryan Strome to get Snyder from Vancouver or Bishop from Ottawa but they would be sitting in the playoff spot right now. Snow has got to get a top goaltender for the Islanders to make the next step. I wonder what the price would be to pry Frederick Anderson away from Anaheim.

I like Hickey's play, but he is a bit small, still like him though

Wish Clutterbuck was 6'4 and 230.

Imagine if Poulin could stop a beachball?

Any team that Ices Hickey, Martinek, Strait and Amac can't be taken serious!

Everybody wants to trade Vanek but what do we get in return. There is no way we get equal value equivalent to Vanek numbers.

Not scoring on the five on three hurt. But really need the big save. Poulin needs a lot more time. Good goalie just lacks poise. That will come. Tough one though great atmosphere in there. Man it takes the penguins a lot to beat us. We give them a hard time. Loved Matt Martin stand up for his teammate. Back at it sat. We will win that. Super happy for bailey. Tough loss but love the team we got.

I wouldn't bother signing him, trade him

I think Vanek will stay bc he will end the season with a ton of points playing on this line. The question is if Wanger will offer him 7 mil a year or is snowballs just blowin smoke up our ass. Snowballs also needs to sign one of the top free agent goaltenders that will be available and a good older veteran player like Danny Heatley.

We have to move Vanek and Amac, the more I think about it, the more I see Vanek leaving for nothing. We have Strome who could be on the top line. We need a goalie, defense will be coming next year.

Vicp73

Let's face it, you wanna beat these guys you need a top tier number one goalie. Nabby and Poulin ain't the answer. Lot's of work still needed to take this team to the next level.

Not for nothing I love okposo but he killed us tonight by passing the puck in the slot instead of shooting it. He had 3 golden opps but tried making an unselfish play. Sometimes you have to fire it on net.

Especially if Poulin is your 1.

Really when you claim 4 dmen off waivers like they did 16-18 months ago it certainly doesn't breed a lot of confidence in the "pipeline"

The main reason people want to trade him is he probably walks in the summer (and his effort and body language leave something be desired at times). I think we would all be fine if he signed an extension tomorrow, but the chances of that are slim to none with none kicking slims azz.

@orange2327 What are you talking about?? That Martinek and Hickey pairing is on there way to Sochi!!

@dagr33k

Definitely agree, I couldn't believe he didn't shoot the puck right there, and maybe the goalie leaves a rebound for a score. Another backup goalie beats us huh?

The Pens might sweep em this year.

Let's face this, they're terrible.

They're 15-25 in regulation, which is among the bottom 4 in the league, which is where they are.

The fact they've lost 25 games in regulation at this point in the season is not flattering.

Looking ahead, you know Snowangblow are going to selloff Vanek and MacDonald, which is not going to help them get better, necessarily.

You also should know, if one's been paying attention, that the fact they are playing iut the string at NVMC means Wang still owns the team, which means NOTHING WILL BE DONE TO UPGRADE AND GET OUT FROM THE SALARY FLOOR.

Dude, until Wingwang sells, we're totally fooked.

@Chris R that was a pretty close game... if neilsen stays back and chips it normally instead of jamming it into zatkoff's pad the game is tied and isles with momentum. it was that close

@ivo leggi  Frederick Anderson is youg 24 big 6/04 and real good. Anaheim said there not trading Hiller. Maybe we have a shot in the off season as a UFA.

Zee Executioner

Haha.

It's not just Vanek they'd be losing.

It's Moulson and the first round pick, as well.

@Zee Executioner It's not even the money, get me a GM and a coach with some prior experience!! I'm sick of always scraping the Barrel with half ass coaching staff, scouting staff and  A GM who would never have been hired by any other owner with half a brain

Vicp73

@Chris R @victor pereira What are you talking about man, He's going to sign Macdonald  for the 5 million he wants, and extend Nabby for another 2 years!! Whats wrong with you? the rebuild is right on track!

kevinpt

@Zee Executioner

But why would you spend a lot of money when you're rebuilding? Makes some sense to me to save money on big free agents while you're drafting lots of prospects and developing them. It's not like the Islanders were going to be a legit playoff team in the last few years, so why spend a lot of money? I thought the Vanek trade was a sign that, now that the younger guys are reaching their potential, the team is ready to spend money and make a push. I could be wrong, but that's just the feeling I've gotten.

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

As far as what's below me here, how could ya not just luhhhhhhhove this fantastic team.

Yessireebob and DeNiro34, after 8 years of rebuilding, a 15-25 record in regulation and dead last in the division is what you were aiming for, i'm sure.

They still 26th overall in the league?

Yup yup. Great job, boys. Great team!

Give me/us a break. Please stop.

Probably a lot less than we gave away to get him Dagr33

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

True....Absolutely....and i'm jealous you can do italics!

However, in order to get qualified hockey people to come in here, Wang would have to do two things:

1. Cede over control of hockey operations

2. Spend money on everything from scouting to development to players (some being UFA's).

He will never do either, which brings back to the same crap.

Wang must be kicked off of the Island.

My agita and anger was kindled in full flame this offseason for some reason. I actually thought the impending move and sight success would be impetus for Chuckie to invest and for them to act like a pro team and get a number 1 goalie. We talked about Bernier for a solid month.

They did their usual: NOTHING

and i think I blew a gasket that I never have fully put back or replaced.

If you've been a fan since the mid70's, maybe you'll remember this: there was a guy balding, pudgy, stocky, with a dirty blonde mustache who used to sell programs. He had lungs of leather. For 2 to 3 gates away in the middle of a throng, you could hear him shouting, "GAME PROGRAM!!! TONIGHT'S LIIIINEUUUUP!!!!"

I also always wondered even as a young boy about the color scheme of that place. The concourse was cream and brown - the orange tile is still there. Everything was brown, then! And the seats in the lower bowl were red and green (red on one side, green on the other).

Were they tripping when they built the place?

@Zee Executioner  Me too, I said about 3 or 4 years ago I was done, but being I'm a fan from their 2nd season it's hard to forget them, every frigging year we start off with hope and by the end of November the bubble bursts and despair sets in for the rest of the season, along with oodles of angst, agita, and hopelessness.

Zee Executioner

You're right. I think i need to chillax. I told myself i'd be over the Islanders franchise by now, but old habits die hard. Sorry for sticking my fingers in my mouth so to speak.

Accepted, we are on the same side. Kevin posted about a feeling he had about Vanek, and I responded to him, and don't let the trolls get to you, we have enough aggravation with the underachieving team of ours that we root for.

Rebuild is wang for staying at the floor

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

God I hate him!

He brings out the worst feelings in me. I don't think I will ever forgive that sonofabeetch for what he's done with my team.

And for all the astroturfing troll ladies feminine hygiene products that defend or tolerate the scumbag, you can all go kiss my elegant posterior.

Zee Executioner
Zee Executioner

That's party line garbage. A professional organization signs UFA's to supplement what they have and what they may lose in their own system.

They don't stay at the salary floor longer than a year or so.

Wang doesn't because he is not interested in being a hockey owner and is using the team as a way to pad his tax writeoffs.

Nevermind this rebuild is in year 8, kevin
