Oh Yeah…1970: The Knicks make NY title-town

SNY’s new show, Oh Yeah…, looks back to when the Jets, Mets and Knicks all won championships in a 15-month span between 1969 and 1970 after the Knicks’ NBA title victory in May 1970.

Oh Yeah… takes viewers on a trip down memory lane by re-visiting the most entertaining, offbeat, and perhaps forgotten local sports topics over the past 40 years with each episode devoted to a specific year. New episodes air Sundays at 10 pm on SNY.

wow a good way to remember things. 1970s basketball was not even that physical. people play with communication and fight for themselves through the injury.

I'm often accused of being NY-centric and I'm often unapologetic with zero #uck$ given.  I was just talking to my dad about this.... and we've heard many athletes say that winning in NY is like nothing else.  You get showered with love from the ppl for the rest of your life.  Look at Clyde and them.  Look at the Ewing/Starks Knicks and they didn't even win.  For Melo to win in NY..... sheesh.... that'll cause a stupid windfall of additional endorsements for years.

Hopefully these guys get it done.

Now 1969-70 was quite the time. That was my senior year in high school. In addition to the Miracle Mets, Joe Namath's guaranteed victory over the unbeatable Colts, and the Knicks getting title number 1, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and Woodstock was the concert people still talk about. It was an amazing time before people knew drugs and alcohol were bad. The Vietnam War was raging and the draft was sending poor and working class Americans to fight and die halfway around the globe. America was recovering from the assassinations of RFK and MLK. George Wallace carried 5 deep south states in the 1968 Presidential Elections. Riots rocked Newburgh, NY and the high was "liberated" by the Black Panthers.America was undergoing fundamental change.

The Mets after years of futility, finally gave the old NY Giants and Brooklyn Dodger fans a reward for their support. The AFL, was destroyed in the first two "World Championship Games" and the Jets came in heavy underdogs. The Knicks, buoyed by the trade of Bellamy and Komives for DeBusschere, found their Zen, even before Zen was popular. They shared the ball, worked together, and really demonstrated how the whole could exceed the sum of the parts. With Willis Reed injured in game 7, Clyde had the greatest game 7 of any athlete in any sport. He scored 37 points, dished out 19 assists, and grabbed 7 boards while guarding Jerry West, the Logo.

Willis Reed was the 8th pick in the second round for the NY Knicks.Jim "Bad News " Barnes was the first round pick.

Marion is the one I like. Only guy there that can fit the triangle as well IMO

@Sandro Guedes Beasley seems the only one that could actually be had at the min.

The rest would have to be willing to take paycuts imo.

It really is. You think jeter would be a god like he is now if he played anywhere else with the same stats? Jeter had a whole commercial dedicated to his retirement lol

@BiggieTKB That's funny. I was a college freshman in Mass. in the fall of '86. Literally saw a TV tossed out of a third floor window by angry Sox fans a la SCTV.

@MeloStat301 @rico there's a lot of stupid in there, I'd say profound stupidity. There's also hate, hubris, classicism, racism and horror.  I just can't find anything "funny" in there or even understand why anyone else does.

It's really disturbing and sad to me

@thatzagoodpoint @brookdon And winning with the Knicks will be a different beast....  although the Nets are kinda in NY, they don't have the actual NY pull (fans) of the Mets from the Yankees, Islanders from Rangers, or Jets from Giants.  The Knicks have a super high share of the city's passionate fans... only passionate Brooklynites, NJ folks, and random transplants who live in Williamsburg or Fort Greene truly root for the Nets.

city might go dumb if melo gets it.
