Earlier in the offseason, it was reported that the Knicks were hoping to reel in Pau Gasol as a way of convincing Carmelo Anthony to stay in the Big Apple.
Apparently, talk of such a pairing must’ve been appealing to Gasol. Perhaps he thought the Knicks were on to something. He reportedly wants to see that through, but unfortunately, not exactly in the way New York was initially hoping.
Instead, it appears as though Gasol would remain in La La Land if Carmelo Anthony opts to sign with the Lakers.
“If the Lakers get Carmelo, Pau will stay,” said a person familiar with Gasol’s thinking (Los Angeles Times, July 3).
Keith SchlosserThe Lakers, like Phil Jackson and the Knicks, envision an Anthony-Gasol pairing in the front court. They have the potential to offer Gasol a much higher (more than double) annual salary in a multi-year deal than New York. Perhaps that, paired with the opportunity to stay in a familiar place, will be convincing enough for Gasol to stay.
Signing Anthony would undoubtedly mean the Lakers are committed, not only to improving, but competing for a championship right away. Such dedication, along with the opportunity to hit the hardwood with Gasol and Kobe Bryant, may prove to be too much for the Knicks’ star to turn down.
The Lakers are set to meet with Carmelo Anthony on Thursday following previous meeting with the Bulls, Rockets, and Mavericks. They Knicks are widely expected to meet with the forward last.
