Report: Phil Jackson, Knicks reach agreement on basketball operations position

Phil Jackson and the Knicks have come to an agreement on a job (Berman, March 11).

Jackson will oversee basketball operations for the team, and will have “president” in his title. Steve Mills will stay with the organization in a different role.

Lawyers are working on the contract details.

my take is, phil jackson signing a player to the knicks would give that player some confidence in which a guy as decorated as PJ would select you to be part of his ball club. To a certain degree, having a guy like that sign a player to play for him has to mean something about their level of talent or potential. Unless PJ turns out to be horrible at evaluating talent, i see good things coming baring that dolan keeps out of his way.

Time to look for a coach. My preference, Thibodeau, JVG, Mark Jackson in that order. I just hope Calipari stays in Kentucky. Want no part of him.

I'll take either Van Gundy. No experience as gm but has 11 titles as coach and players would love to play under a guy with that much championship experience.

He will bring the ax! Build it the right way. By 2019-20 they may be raising a banner.

So pumped about this move.

Side note, I am glad we did not make any trades at the deadline or do something stupid like trade STAT for longer term contracts.  If the team can keep winning games with STAT and Chandler in the starting line up, sneak into the playoffs and have a good series against Indiana or Miami, maybe push them to 7 games…then moving STAT or Chandler in the off season will be sooo much easier.  STAT has been healthy pretty much the whole season.  And now that he is starting, he is putting up monster numbers on offense and the team is winning again.  Other teams will notice that.  Chandler is playing much better too.  TEams will notice that too.  WIth only one year left on their contracts, there could be plenty of teams in the off season who might take a gamble of having them for one year and their rights to resign afterwards now that they are playing well.  We could theoretically get much better value for either of them (and JR too) in the off season if we finish the season strong.

Things are looking up Knicks fans!  I can feel that positive Phil Jackson karma all ready working its magic!

All you Melo Fans better take in the remaining games while u can. His days in a Knicks uniform is quite numbered

The media is awful when it comes to covering the Knicks. Even if Melo leaves we are not doomed. We have a first rounder and cap space in 2015. We can tank next year if we want to...

Why when every other team tanks it ok? We got Phil Jackson cap space, credibility. Possibly sign and trade Carmelo. Trade Chandler. The future isn't bad.

Even if Melo leaves that trade was still not a bad trade. It gave us a chance to win. Am are was the problem the last 3 years

Can we get it written in the contract that Dolan will no longer have any input on personnel decisions?

everyone can say oh this is a bad move and it wont work out, but in reality its a good move it cant hurt phil jackson cause hes a rookie at this and the knicks need to try something, good move on my part hope he fixes things not just put band aids on things like the last few presidents have done besides Walsh, just hope hes ready for it cause as NY fans especially Knicks fans we are hungry and we need to win now

SHANNON BROWN ON PHIL JACKSON:

The Knicks guard spent two-plus seasons playing for Jackson as a Laker and sees how the former Lakers and Bulls coach can intellectually challenge players.

“I think if he did come this way, he’s got a lot of knowledge about the game of basketball and players, how to win,” said Brown, who played for the Lakers from 2009-11. “I think that’s one of the things that he’ll bring. He’s got something like 11 championships, so you can’t beat that.”

Brown thinks Jackson can make the transition from the bench to the front office and still have an impact.

“He wouldn’t really want too much of an outside input,” Brown said. “He’s one of those guys that likes to study by himself. He doesn’t need too many voices in his head, disrupting his thoughts. I definitely think he could help the franchise a lot.”

“He had a formula man,” Brown added of Jackson’s style. “And it worked from the East Coast to the West Coast.”

Totally off topic, but has anyone ever brought up the fact that maybe the Bulls real target is a certain player that plays a little south of me?

Welcome Phil Jackson!

Instant credibility.  Plus he's a true Knick: #5 all-time for games played as a Knick.

Let's hope there's a 14th ring in his future.

TKB (and I) seem to love this move while P&T seems to hate the move and Phil Jackson mainly. They also seem very concerned with saving Dolan some money because they feel we are giving up too much for a guy who isn't going to be day-to-day. I didn't expect that reaction from some people over there...

Start of a new era!

Phil and Van Gundy don't get along, phil will hire someone to instill the triangle. Could see shump and Hardaway in the backcourt next year.

@Biggie Even you and I teamed up and got this one correct  How does it feels to get your first one right?

Now let's try to make that a habit from now on.

I'm taking from your comment that you do not like Carmelo as a fan what makes you want to see him leave. as a fan I cannot blame him for the problem here. Do you?

L

Where not gonna win now. Next year is either tank or playoff bound. Depends on Carmelo. Either way I feel comfortable with Jax in their making decisions.

If he wants to build around Melo thats cool. If Melo leaves I'm cool with that.

@Knixtradamus  Dude, now is not the time to be negative.  Sure, like any move that is made, it could not work out.  But here's the thing.  Phil has 11 rings.  Jumping from player to GM is quite different than going from player to coach (with 11 rings) to head of basketball operations.  He is basically being given full control to hire everyone.  There will be some people who won't be fired…Mills, Houston…but anyone else is probably fair game.  He is not coming in here to be the GM.  He will hire someone to do that day to day stuff.  But the GM, the coaching staff, the players…all will get Phil's final approval.

All I'm saying is that as bad as its been this year, look at what has happened.  Grunwald makes the Barngani trade and gives up a first rounder and then he's fired.  The team struggles but instead of making a trade at the deadline, a trade that would most likely only marginally improve the team and most likely would involve giving up a young prospect (Shump, Hardaway) or a draft pick (or both), The Knicks stand pat.  Instead of firing a coach mid season and creating more drama, the Knicks stand pat.  Now they make this move of hiring Phil.  Maybe, just maybe, Dolan has realized that he needs to hire someone with championship experience and gravitas and stay out of the way, just sign the checks.  Hey, sure it could all be a PR move and turn into a disaster.  But this feels different.

As coach, especially once he won some rings, Phil had a big say in who was on the team.  Who you surround your stars with is just as important as having your superstars.  Getting all the players to believe is just as important as having the talent.  Look at last year.  The team had Jason Kidd and had early season success, believed in itself and won 54 games.  They bought into the system, had a guy like Kidd who helped glue everyone together and they were a good team.  This year they don't have that, don't have real leadership, don't believe and they struggle.  So much of it is mental and that is Jackson's big thing.  Just his presence will help.  And yes, he will be giving pointers to the coaching staff.

So go ahead and be negative, but you should reserve judgement and you shouldn't criticize fans of the team for wanting to believe this is a good move. There is no reason to believe Phil won't have a positive impact.

@Knixtradamus why so much pessimism ?!?............A Good start i think nobody can argue !

MeloStat301

@Knixtradamus We needed a GM before we needed a new coach...honestly we needed a new owner, but that's not happening.  You fix everything starting from the top...Phil is here and he will pick his coach and players.  He has also recovered from his health problems and he wont be working part time.  It was reported he would be moving to NY for the whole season and not many GM's scout anyways, that's why they have..you know..scouts.

A Gm would typically go see a player if they have a lottery pick ect...but they don't go and scout every single player, that is why there are scouts, that are separate from the GM/Prez title.  How do you know he doesn't watch college B-Ball??  Talent is talent...and a guy like phil I'm sure knows talent when he sees it.  He does have lack of experience...but so did Riley..West..auerbach...but they all did excellent jobs putting teams together.  Common denominator?  They were great coaches, and great coaching usually translates into the F.O.

By the way...I thought he wasn't coming here??  Now your narrative has switched to "Phil is old..part time Gm"  LOL...Troll on my friend...Troll on.

@Knixtradamus we get it you don't like the move. Name me an experienced FO executive that we could have had during the offseason? or do you want Mills/Dolan effing stuff up

He is inexperienced but he knows basketball. Right now we have a billionaire trust fund baby who just mingles with stars in the stands during games. He doesn't know basketball or what it takes to win it all. No big name star wants to play for James Dolan after this seasons debaucle yet again. Phil Jackson has respect around the league that not many others have. He will attract big names and having his voice on our side is a good thing.

@MeloStat301 I wanted him since before he even came to the NBA, when he was playing in Greece.  He had the athleticism and D, the rest of his game has now come together enough to keep him on the court.

@anthony G. Decesare  Two very large egos in Phil and JVG. Ya never know though, most would have never guessed Phil would come to NY, especially me.

I once heard the late Red Foxx talking about his marriage to a Korean women. "My in-laws hated me. they were so upset that she was marrying a Black man and and old dirty one" said Foxx.   The interviewer then asked.."did it ever resolve itself?"  To which Foxx replied: "oh they love me now!"

Interviewer: "How did it change so abruptly?"

Foxx: "I just opened my wallet!"

I think we can apply this to Dolan and Jax

@L Not True. It's just that he does not fit into the rebuild that Phil will need to do in 2015 and I think Melo will want to leave on his own to pursue a ring if that is indeed his priority

@xmenreturn

I like Melo and wouldnt be upset if he left to pursue a ring. As of right now this maybe his best option... Wait out and get your buddy Lbj here in 15'

In my opinion Amare ruined NY with his health!

@thatsagoodpoint I don't like the idea as a Knick Fan for him to go there but I do see that as being a good option for him.

We just have to get our house in order and not worry to much about other distractions.  It should be about making the case for 2015+ and to go after LBJ.

@Knixtradamus Phil Jackson will make MSG a target destination for big names . Our future is not as bleak as people may think. We have a couple young pieces already, a star that we will have the chance to resign, 1st rounder in 2015, and a ton of cap space in the summer of 2015 as well. Now with all that cap space coming up, would you want Jimmy Guitar making big time decisions on who to sign, or would you want a new voice in Phil Jackson. He wants full control for a reason. He knows the Knicks history and the series of mistakes they keep making over and over.

Put it this way Knixtradamus, don't think of it as Phil Jax, a guy who has never been a FO executive before, is now making basketball decisions for the Knicks. Think of it as James Dolan, a guy who has never played/coached/watched a full season of basketball, is now NOT making basketball decisions for the NY Knicks!! To me, that is enough to warrant my full optimism in an otherwise crap season.
