Phil Jackson open to hiring non-triangle head coach

After missing out on Steve Kerr, a source has indicated that Phil Jackson is open to hiring a head coach who doesn’t specialize in running the triangle offense (Berman, May 16).

According to Marc Berman, the potential willingness to bring in a non-triangle head coach could open the door for Mark Jackson, who was recently fired by Golden State.

Aside from Jackson, Phil Jackson is reportedly interested in Derek Fisher (who is still playing for the Thunder), Brian Shaw (who has stated that he’s happy with the Nuggets), and Nate McMillan, among others.

Nuggets coach Brian Shaw says he's not a candidate to coach Knicks
The Denver Post

If the New York Knicks have designs on enticing Nuggets coach Brian Shaw away from Denver, which ESPN reported Thursday, they'll have to look elsewhere. Shaw plans to remain with the Nuggets.

"I have a job here in Denver that I'm happy with," Shaw said. "Though the season didn't turn out how any of us would have liked, I'm happy where I am, and I'm looking forward to coaching a full complement of healthy players. I'm not interested in doing anything than what I'm doing now."

Phil recommended Brian Shaw as Laker coach after he retired. Then LA hired and fired two Mikes. Shaw went to Indy as Vogel's top assistant, before landing in Denver.

So if we do land Shaw, it would be a fantastic hire. He has experience, knows the triangle as well as anyone aside from Phil, and obviously has a relationship with Phil. He is credited with the turnaround of Lance Stephenson's career, and was a HOT candidate last season for every coaching opening.

@rgm891  Probably an assistant coach. Remember, Phil wants a younger guy.

@akamarb

Except Shaw has a signed contract and can't leave unless the Nuggets release him from it.

@akamarb  Oh really? The season you mean the Nuggets were playing well until nearly everyone on their roster got hurt. And you forget Shaw's work in Indiana......
