Phil wanted trade to ‘change chemistry’

Knicks president Phil Jackson said Thursday that he shipped Tyson Chandler and Raymon Felton to Dallas in order to “change some of the chemistry of this team” and “bring in some … character guys that we feel can carry this forward.” (ESPN, June 26)

In return, the Knicks received Jose Calderon, Shane Larkin, Samuel Dalembert, Wayne Ellington and two second-round picks in Thursday’s draft.

“Jose is a thoughtful guard. He’s got great control of the ball. He pushes the ball up, accelerates it up the court,” Jackson said. “He’s a very good 3-point shooter. He organizes a team quite well and we anticipate he’ll fit in to what we’re trying to do.”

While Calderon is a strong outside shooter, Jackson looks to Dalembert to be a strong interior defender.

“He can replace Tyson’s defensive ability — maybe not be the defensive player of the year like Tyson was, but he’s going to be a quality defender,” Jackson said.

Jackson took over as team president in March only to discover several chemistry issues between players that needed to be addressed.

“Watching them play I saw guys that looked at each other like, ‘You didn’t back me up, you weren’t here when I needed help,’ ” Jackson said. “There just wasn’t the right combination or feel (where) it felt like everybody was in synch all the time.”

This trade is the first step toward addressing those chemistry issues, Jackson hoped his players see that they are moving forward.

“Well, we want to send a message to all of our players that we are on the move and we are making changes and we are making changes to move forward in the direction that we want to go,” Jackson said. “We want to be more aggressive defensively, we want to have a certain sense of offensive alacrity, getting up and down the court and challenging defenses to get back and protect the basket.”

Transparency and Accountability - Two words Phil brings to the table. Love it. He speaks often to the media, tells what he feels and only cares about moving forward and not hurting the millionaires feelings.

love that Phil has a plan and is executing towards it with emotional intelligence. the unjust favoritism with Woodson became laughable last year. we might still stink next year if Melo leaves, but if so, we can look towards having a great team in 2015. All assuming that the Leprechaun Dolan doesn't mess it up of course.

Every time the team starts heading in the right direction, James Dolan begins chiming in again and dictates which moves he thinks should be made.

And the whole cycle starts again...........

Despite the recent moves Knicks still need a decent two way center and a floor general. Calderon and dalembert are not significant upgrades imo. If melo doesn't 're-sign the Knicks as currently constructed will be a lottery team.

Alacrity...now THERE'S a word you don't hear every day...or every year for that matter...

@bklyndude Where has he chimed in and stated what moves he thinks should be made? I haven;t seen anything yet.

@jsnooka LOL .calderon is not a significant upgrade? have you watched the Knicks point guards the last 10 years and have you watched what Calderon has done on the floor? Its night and day. He's not chris paul, but he's light years better than what we have had.

@jsnooka Oh and if they become a lottery team, they have about $20 million on the books, a lottery pick, and $40 million in Cap space to spend. Geeze, is it really that big of a problem With Aldridge, Iriving, Marc Gasol and others that will be Free agents. Along with the following year being Durant.

@jsnooka And next summer if they wanted to move JR 1 year left and Calderon, 2 years left for an adequate PG, i'm sure they can do it. If Hou can move Asik for a 1st rounder, those two can get moved when they make less than $8 and $7 million each.

They can go into 2015 with about $6 million on the books. And can get 3 MAX players if Melo doesn't resign.

Want to clarify what the problem is?
